Australia’s heritage AUSTRALIA’S heritage is everything that contributes to this country’s identity. It’s what gives us understanding and helps conveys the stories of our development as a nation. It captures where we’ve come from, where we are now and gives context to where we are headed as a community. Australia’s heritage includes our spirit and ingenuity, historic buildings and plac- es, values, traditions, events and our un- ique, living landscapes. Its role is to bring people together, create community identity and a sense of pride. It is vital to preserve and protect the special places, our rich indigenous herit- age, the diverse historic sites and the stories that together reflect our growth as a nation. The list OUR heritage is managed by various levels of government and peak bodies that ident- ify and list places for their heritage values. The heritage significance of an item includes all the things that make it special to past, present and future generations. These may be its historic origins and sub- sequent development, its association with particular people or events, its visual or townscape qualities, its construction or other technical qualities, a religious or symbolic role and archaeological research potential. There are more than 80 places on the National Heritage List that are protected through the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Con- servation Act 1999. Included in this list are Austra- lia’s 17 World Heritage places: The Great Barrier Reef; Kakadu National Park; Willandra Lakes; Tasmanian Wilderness; Lord Howe Island Group; Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park; Cen- tral Eastern Rainforest Reserves; The Wet Tropics of Queensland; Shark Bay; Fraser Island; Australian fossil mam- mal sites; Macquarie Island; the Grea- ter Blue Mountains area; Purnululu National Park; the Royal Exhibition Building and the surrounding Carlton Gardens; The Sydney Opera House. Our indigenous heritage AUSTRALIA has been the home of Aboriginal people for close to 50,000 years and the evidence of their pre- sence is everywhere in the landscape. Places of significance include ceremo- nial sites, camping places, sacred land- scapes, burial and massacre sites, historic reserves and artworks. WORD WALL Heritage: Something inherited at birth, such as personal characteristics, status, and possessions Anything that has been transmitted from the past or handed down by tradition The evidence of the past, such as historical sites, buildings, and the unspoilt natural environment What are the places and stories that make Australia and Australians special? What is your story? Your heritage is a legacy from the past, a living, integral part of life today and the stories and places that you pass on to future generations. A Titanic voyage A MEMORIAL cruise on its way to the North Atlantic site where the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank 100 years ago, battled bad weather on its route and a medical emergency to get to the exact spot the disaster occurred. The commemorations of the reputedly unsinkable ship’s doomed voyage were in remembrance of all the lives lost when the ship sank. The memorial cruise aboard the MS Balmoral retraced the ill-fated route of the Titanic. It set sail from Southampton in southern England, carrying 1309 passengers, including relatives of some of the more than 1500 Titanic passengers who died. The cruise recreated the experience onboard the Titanic with many passengers dressed in period costumes for the journey, as well as crew members and stewards. Passengers also ate meals from the Titanic’s menu, while a live band played music of the era. Like the Titanic, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. A Quick Run AUSTRALIA’S richest footrace, the annual Stawell Gift, was run in north-west Victoria over the Easter weekend. Run on grass over 120 metres, the race’s competitors are handicapped according to their form. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps as a Stawell Gift finalist, 20 year-old business sports management student Matthew Wiltshire from Ballarat, running from a mark of eight metres, won an action-packed final.
