VP REPORT

While working in the new shop, Grandad died by falling through the roof, leaving Gramps and his brother Georgeto run the shop and to support their mother. Gramps closed the shop and retired in 1967. Del remembers workingaround the garage at nine years old. Del drove a 1929 Model A truck to high school without a license, with hisparent’s permission. He was also told they would deny they gave him permission, if he were caught. He never gotcaught! In 1985, Dan Prehm found a Coupe for Del stuck in 6 inches of dirt. That year Del restored his first Model A, a 1931Sport Coupe, with Gramps’ and Dan's help. Del next found a '29 Sedan, but wanted a truck. So, Dan found a truckcab, put it in Del’s driveway with Christmas lights all over it, and a sign that read, “Merry Christmas, From Dan andLiz”. Del gave Dan the Sedan body and Del built his second Model A, a 1929 Pickup. In 1987 Gramps moved to Las Vegas and along with Del and Dan joined the Las Vegas Valley Model A Ford Club. Many members were helped by Gramps in restorations, repairs and seminars. Gramp's knowledge and willingness tohelp everyone prompted the club to create the Gramps Award for outstanding service to the club in the field of automotive technology. The 1990's saw Del restore a '31 Roadster. Upon retirement in 2008, Del worked with Jim Hildreth at the shop, restoring (at last count) ten Model A's! Del and Lynda currently own a '31 Sport Coupe and a '29 Town Sedan.

October and November are definitely Model A weather days! Since our last meeting we have had 5 events!October 26-28 was our Beatty Day's with 11 people and 4 cars. Bob will be happy to brag about the 4 trophy's and2 ribbons our club took home. That same weekend Ray & Pam White sponsored an event highlighting the Old Water District building in BoulderCity. I wasn't there but heard 6 people and 3 cars represented our club. I'll let Ray fill us in on the event. November 2-4 Hal White organized a tour to Death Valley China Ranch & Date Farm with a visit to Shoshone fortheir annual Western Days. The Pahrump Winery was also a part of this tour. Hal can fill us in on the suspensefuldrive to the ranch. Mike can tell you what it was like getting out of the valley! Five Model A's and 14 members andguests had a great time. Doug & Elaine and Karen & Mike Schmidt were able to join the group in Pahrump. ( continued top of page 4)

physical therapy. Best wishes for a good recovery, Bob. Dave Ringenbach will have surgery on his throat at USC on the 28th. Please keep him in your thoughts andprayers. Max Miller lost his wife after an extended illness. Thinking of you and yours Max. A check in Lois' memory hasbeen sent to the kidney foundation of Las Vegas. Carol Miller has two more weeks off her feet, she says the foot is feeling better. Lorraine Hanna says hello and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Del Hering’s Model A history goes back two generations. Del’sgrandad had his first shop in 1927 working on Model T’s and A’s.Del’s father, Gramps, worked in the shop until it was sold in 1934 to open a new shop in Southgate, California.

November Sunshine report: Doug & Elaine Warren joined us forlunch & dinner in Pahrump. Great to see you both. Keep up thegood work, Doug. Bob Chesto had knee replacement surgery and is now having

If my body was a car, I would be trading it in for a new model!! I've got bumps, dents, scratches and my headlights are out of focus.  My gearbox is seizing up and it takes me hours to reach maximum speed.  I overheat for no reason. And every time I sneeze, cough or laugh either my radiator leaks or my exhaust back fires!!  Author unknown.

Free BBQ, gifts, kid crafts and beautiful weather made it a fantastic run. November 18th, last but not least, 24 members and 9 Model A's showed up at Du-Par's restaurant for breakfast. Fantastic turn out for some great food with good friends! Thanks to every member who sponsored a tour or breakfast this year, you all did a great job!!

,     Well here we are, the long-awaited overnight tour to the China Ranch Date Farm / Pahrump wine tour, overnight stay and trip to Shoshone,CA. As before any trip you have to plan. Phone calls made, members contacted etc. Our overnight itinerary is as follows. We were going to meetat McDonalds at Blue Diamond road and S. Rainbow at 8:00 am and depart at 8:30 am. From there we were going to China Ranch Date Farm, back track to Pahrump to Pahrump Valley Winery for lunch, wine tasting and tour. From there to second winery wine tasting and tour atsanders Family Winery. From there to our Motel rooms at Best western motel. Rest for a little bit and go out to dinner at Ohjah Japanese steakHouse. After a good night rest and breakfast, we were off to Shoshone, CA. for Shoshone Days Festival and then back home. That was the planand itinerary. After all is said and done everything is looking good. We have 8 count them 8 model A Fords going and 25 people going for dinner.      Now we wait for our departure date of Nov. 2. Life is good, everything came together nicely. Then it struck, you know that sinking feeling. After all arrangements are made and announced, and plans made, a sequence of events started happening. One model A broke an axle, amember had a small heath issue, two other member received phone calls from doctors and both went in for foot and knee surgery. Lost anothercouple due to not being able to get off work (we all know what that is like). Lost another couple due to unexpected family member coming intotown. Boy we are dropping like flies We are now down to 9 people still going. Then we have confusion from the motel telling us they do not haveany rooms available. We were able to talk with motel and clear up confusion. They do have rooms for Las Vegas Valley Model A Ford Clubmembers.     Everything is back on track or is it. After some research and checking," Houston we have a problem". There is no way we can drive from Vegasto Chine Ranch Date Farm and back to route 160 to Pahrump on a single tank of gas given our extremely high Model A fuel consumption. Wewould all be sitting on the side of the road hoping for cell service to get a hold of someone to bring us gas. Well back to the drawing board as theysay.     Not being one to give up very easily, I recalculated, made more phone calls, did more research, and have come up with a plan. We changed ourstarting point a couple miles down the road to route 159 and route 160 at Terrible Gas Station and Mini Mart.  We have a new itinerary. ChinaRanch Date Farm stays the same but we now will have to drive to Shoshone, CA for gas. We can no longer make our lunch at Pahrump Valleywinery and had to cancel lunch at that location. Where to have lunch? Then a light bulb came on. Club members Mike and Karen Schmidt live inPahrump. Made a phone call and was able to get a hold to Karen. Advised her of our situation and she informed us that she and Mike go to RedSky Restaurant. Everything else stays the same and we will get to Pahrump Valley winery on Saturday afternoon.     We all meet and top off our tanks. At 8:30 am on the dot here we go. Our drive on route 160 was pleasant.  All five model A's made it over thehump with no problems and continued to our Tecopa road turn off.  Not much warning that we all have to make a left turn and haveapproximately a 1/8 of a mile to cross 2 lanes of traffic and make the turn. We all made it with no problems. We have a nice relaxing 35 to 40mph ride. Very little traffic and cooler morning weather made it very pleasurable.    Within a short period of time we are there, the dreaded dirt road. The road was only one lane at times and the steep downhill just before thefarm was an eye opener and fun. (Let’s do it again). We reached the date farm and had a relaxing and interesting time. The only thing thatwould have made it better was if there weren’t so many flies, but then that is part of the experience.     Leaving the China Ranch Date Farm and going back down that dusty road was just as fun as when we came in. Auhhhhhhhhh, nice back topaved roads. We proceeded to Shoshone, CA. for gas. Only one gas station in the town with a population of 31, according to the sign. We headedto the gas station  and the price of gas was $5.09 for 87 octane and went up from there. $20.00 got us 3.8 gallons, just enough to get us toPahrump.     Down the road we head to Pahrump. We made it to town and what would a tour be without going the wrong way. We pulled over to the side ofthe road and check cell phone. We have cell service, called Mike Schmidt and got reoriented with correct directions and we make a U-turn. Driveto our lunch location like we have been there before. Had a terrific lunch and were joined by Doug and Elaine Warren. It was so good to seethem!  From there, on to Sanders Family Winery. We were met at the door by the owner Jack and with the help of employee Chrystal had awonderful time wine tasting. For those of us that did not taste wine, we were offered beverages and water. After everybody made theirpurchases, we headed back to town to get our rooms at the Best Western Motel. Dennis got into a bit of trouble which will be explained in thisnewsletter in another newsletter article.     We got our rooms and then off  to dinner at the Japanese steak house where Mike, Karen, Doug, and Elaine joined us for a great evening.     The next morning after breakfast and a couple small repairs on our cars we're off again to Shoshone, CA. After spending time there, back toPahrump for lunch and due to some car issues, we canceled the Pahrump Winery tour for another time and headed home.     Everybody made is home safely and I'm thinking they were reflecting on what a great tour we had. So, this is the long version of our tour. Icould have said, we planned, we went, and we came back, THE END.  One last comment, the members that went on this tour were Hal & Pat White, Tony & Jan Gardner, Mike & Charlotte Kessler, Pat & KatMcMahon, Dennis Rutkoskie and friend Daryl. Dan & Liz & his sister and husband met us at the Date Farm.

VETERAN'S DAY CAR SHOW

BOULDER CITY OLD WATER PLANT

DENNIS BEATS THE WRAP!

The Veteran's Day Car show was a big success. There must have been over400 cars total at the show. Our members did a great job representing our club.Doug had his Police car, Kat and Pat drove Henry and Percy, Bill had his '29Modified Model A, Hal was in his '29 Sports Coupe, Jim drove his '29 Pick Up,Bob had his '29 Tudor Sedan and Dan drove his 1930 Deluxe Town Sedan.Tony drove out his 1964 Corvette and displayed it between the Model As. A nicedisplay of cars. The Veterans cooked grilled hot dogs and hamburgers as fast as everyonecould gobble them up. they had a live band playing patriotic music and populartunes. Booths were set up to offer helpful information and free trinkets. For the kids there were train rides and different crafts to make. The weather wasbeautiful which made the entire day very enjoyable. Thanks to Jim for setting this event up for us.

This is a great story you have tohear! After the Model A Club left the China Ranch they drove to Pahrump for lunch. Dennis Rutkoskie followingbehind the other 4 cars was stoppedby a red light. When the light finallyturned green the other cars werecompletely out of sight. He didn'tknow where the restaurant was sohe stepped on the gas to catch upand find the group. Then there it wasthat dreaded sound of police sirens! The police were chasing him!! Going51 mph in a 35 mph speed zone. With the sirens blasting Dennis pullsover with two police cars pulling upbehind him!! He could just picturehimself behind bars!! He explainedhis reason for speeding and pleadedfor mercy! After a brief consultationbetween the two officers they let himgo with a warning and let him knowhe just dodged a $300 fine! Personally, I think they just couldn'tbelieve a Model A could go that fast!Nice going Dennis!

Ray & Pam White hosted a Preserve the Old Water PlantDay in Boulder City. They bothdressed in the era.Dave &Chris and Pat & Kat attendedthe event on Saturday.

On Sunday November 19, 2018 the Las VegasValley Model A Ford Club met at Du-Par'sRestaurant (in the Sun Coast Casino) forbreakfast. A total of 9 Model A's showed-up witha few modern cars in addition. We made quite astir in the parking lot with the Sun Coast'sSecurity Chief showing up to see what wasgoing on. Their security was very nice to workwith but warned us that they could not takeresponsibility for such nice classic cars. I toldhim not to worry and that we take themeverywhere and it is our responsibility to watchthem. He then told me that he would have theirsecurity vehicles patrol the area and watch thevehicles, which I thanked him for. A lot of SunCoast patrons came over to see the vehicles allparked in a row. Inside Du-Par's Restaurant we had a separateback room just for the Model A'ers. We had atotal of 24 people attending, which was a littledisappointing since we had 32 people sign up forthe event. Du-par's specialty is their pancakeswhich are very good and very large. Afterbreakfast several people had to have "take homeboxes" even though they only had the medium orsmall stack of pancakes. Overall, no one wentaway hungry and the manager thanked us forgiving them a try. The service was a little bumpyat times but they made it right and the food wasvery good. It was a beautiful day for a Model A drive with anice breakfast to match. Things don't get muchbetter than that! Regards, Tony & Jan Gardner
