Capability
The SS38MH-5AX is the first Tsugami of its kind. The Tsugami SS38MH-5AX sliding headstock lathe with B-axis is a chucker-convertible, high-performance automatic CNC lathe that offers full 5-axis machining with a FANUC 31i-B5 control. This machine’s backworking overlap with live tool capability allows for multiple tools in the cut, and shorter cycle times. This extremely versatile machine weighs in at just over 15,000 lbs and is equipped with a total of 52 tools, including an automatic tool changer with a 40 tool magazine, 10 tools on the back tool post - 5 of which are driven and modular, and 2 tool positions on the deep hole drill holder. 5 modular type live tools on back tool post for optimum allocation of machining capability.
Flexibility
The Tsugami SS38MH-5AX uses CAPTO C4 tooling in the automatic tool changer that can be of either fixed (for turning) or driven (for drills, mills, taps, etc.) in all tool magazine locations. This allows a wide variety of quick change tools to be constantly available for applications.
When an automatic loading bar feed system and tool breakage detection devices are used, long uninterrupted runs with no operator intervention are possible. High efficiency toggle clamp type collet actuator reduces cycle time and eliminates expensive chucks and actuators.

Reliability
The Tsugami SS38MH-5AX makes it possible to machine the most complex shaped parts from barstock, complete. The linear glass scales on the X1, Y1, and Z1 axis slide ensure high accuracy machining and repeatability.
The SS38MH-5AX has a straight chip drop from the machining area, which carries chip residue and heat away from the headstock and turret slides. A fully enclosed cutting area keeps metal chips and other contaminants away from machine slides, switches, and electronics. Ball screws are lubricated via forced lubrication and tool spindle changing is done via full servo motion with a three piece, no-lift coupling powered by a temperature controlled hydraulic system. This zero lift indexing design eliminates chip contamination of the turret coupling and ensures reliable and rigid tool spindle clamping.
All of this, ensures a long maintenance-free life.
