APRIL 29: ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347-1380) Imagine the pope receiving a young woman s ll in her twen es who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Gregory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Ter ary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contempla ve prayer, austere penances, and mys cal experiences, culmina ng in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarna ng the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contempla on,” Catherine le her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for conver ng souls and healing bodies, she was sought a er to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred le ers and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women Doctors of the Church.

Formed Pick of the Week: Catherine of Siena by Sigrid Undset Sigrid Undset's Catherine of Siena is cri cally acclaimed as one of the best biographies of this well-known and amazing fourteenth-century saint. Known for her historical fic on, which won her the Nobel Prize for literature in 1928, Undset based this factual work on primary sources, her own experiences living in Italy, and her profound understanding of the human heart. One of the greatest novelists of the twen eth century, Undset was no stranger to hagiography. Her me culous research of medieval mes, which bore such fruit in her mul -volume masterpieces Kris n Lavransda er and The Master of Hestviken, acquainted her with some of the holy men and women produced by the Age of Faith. Their exemplary lives le a deep impression upon the author, an impression Undset credited as one of her reasons for entering the Church in 1924. Catherine of Siena was a par cular favorite of Undset, who also was a Third Order Dominican. An extraordinarily ac ve, intelligent, and courageous woman, Catherine at an early age devoted herself to the love of God. The intensity of her prayer, sacrifice, and service to the poor won her a reputa on for holiness and wisdom, and she was called upon to make peace between warring nobles. Believing that peace in Italy could be achieved only if the Pope, then living in France, returned to Rome, Catherine boldly traveled to Avignon to meet with Pope Gregory XI. With sensi vity to the zealous love of God and man that permeated the life of Saint Catherine, Undset presents a most moving and memorable portrait of one of the greatest women of all me. Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for Protection from the Coronavirus

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, we entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross, you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. Patroness of the Diocese of Jefferson City, you know what we need. We are certain of the power of your intercession, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who taught us to “love one another, as I have loved you” took our sufferings upon Himself and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Bring under your mantel of protection all who provide care for the sick and minister to their needs, as your Son implores us to do for one another. V. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. R. Do not despise our pleas and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
