MAY 27 ST. AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY (? – MAY 26, 605) May 27: Saint Augustine of Canterbury, a monk, was the first bishop of Canterbury. While he only labored for another eight years after establishing the diocese, his influence lives on. Part of his success, limited though it was, was due to his compassionate approach to the local peoples. Laboring patiently, Augustine wisely heeded the missionary principles—quite enlightened for the times—suggested by Pope Gregory: purify

rather than destroy pagan temples and customs; let pagan rites and festivals be transformed into Christian feasts; retain local customs as far as possible. The limited success Augustine achieved in England before his death in 605, a short eight years after his arrival, would eventually bear fruit long after in the conversion of England. Augustine of Canterbury can truly be called the “Apostle of England.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was “The Eighth Day,” meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never

kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That’s why it is still Easter!

Sister Nancy recently wrote this in anticipation of her 60th Jubilee:

“A religious vocation is a privilege and a gift. Many years ago I received the gift of a vocation. First, I tried to ignore the call, but the relentless lover, as God is often called, would not let me run away.

What a gift I have been given! Through the years of serving God and the dear neighbor, I have come to realize the value of this gift and what a vocation really means to me.

I have taught music, theatre and religion and enjoyed each. However, the highlight was theater productions with junior high youth in Boonville, Mo., because it included the entire family in some aspect or

another. For example, the dads would build the sets, the moms created the costumes and often

former students who were in high school would ask if they could be part of the cast.

One of my favorite productions was “The Wizard of Oz.” I can

recall with vivid memory the costumes created and the energy and delight of all involved.

A high tribute came from the civic community when I was offered the local civic theater for not only this performance but for others.

I thank God each day for this gift and pray that more young people will follow the call to serve God in religious life.

Sister Nancy Meade is celebrating her 60th Jubilee! She took vows June 1, 1959. Cards may be sent to her at: 1300 Washington St.; PO Box 279; Concordia, KS 66901
