QUOTE OF THE

DAYBlack paint does not deter Kasuri book launch

Shiv Sena’s need to regain its increasingly threatened political space in Maharashtra appeared to rear its head again on Monday when some cadres smeared black paint on Sudheendra Kulkarni for hosting for-mer Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri. Though the Sena shocked Mumbai’s liberal cosmopolitanism by defacing Mr. Kulkarni’s face with oil paint, the Devendra Fadnavis regime showed once again that when the government has adequate will, it is possible to rein in trouble-makers. Despite fresh threats by the Sena to intensify its protests, Mr. Kasuri’s memoir “Neither a Hawk Nor a Dove: An Insider’s Account of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy” was launched without any further incident. The police es-corted Mr. Kasuri to the venue, and threw a three-tier security cover to prevent any further embarrassment to Chief Minister Fadnavis. Mr. Fadnavis, also the home minister, disapproved of the attack. “We may not agree with somebody’s views, but when a foreign dignitary or a diplomat arrives on a valid visa and holds a programme, it’s the duty of a state to provide protection.” Former Indian diplomats said incidents such as these tarnished the country’s image, besides hurting the “idea of India.” Earlier, former BJP leader Kulkarni, the chairperson of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), an international policy think tank, was rendered virtually unrecognisable after some Sena activists stopped his car near his central Mum-bai residence around 9.30 a.m., and smeared his face with paint. Undeterred, Mr. Kulkarni came to ORF’s south Mumbai office, and announced that he would not be cowed down by the attack and would contin-ue with the book launch. The attack came after Mr. Kulkarni met Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray late on Sunday night to persuade the Sena to withdraw its agitation. Six persons, including Sena shakha pra-mukh Gajanan Patil, were arrested for their alleged role in the attack. If the murder of a Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh on September 28 on the suspicion of cow slaughter shook the nation’s conscience, the at-tack on centre-right thinker Sudheendra Kulkarni on Monday took many by surprise since it was an NDA constituent, the Shiv Sena, which was behind it. Sena activists smeared Mr Kulkarni’s face with black paint in protest against his decision to go ahead with the book launch of former Pakistan foreign minister Khur-shid Mahmud Kasuri. The attack was so vicious — and probably unexpected — that it pushed senior BJP pol-itician LK Advani, who incidentally had been quiet on the UP attack till now, to condemn it.

Chopra has decided to sit on the director’s chair after a long time and has zeroed in on Singh and Kapoor to be his protagonists. Now, we don’t know what the film is all about but we are sure it will be something really amazing for Chopra to direct it. But we feel there is something common be-tween his heroine Vaani and his earlier find Anushka Sharma. In fact, there is a possibility that Vaani’s career graph might mirror NH10 babe’s one. You might not get it instantly but if

That’s perhaps the biggest common link between the two. For every newcomer, debut is of utmost importance as that sets the time for the future. The government on Tuesday issued spectrum trad-ing guidelines that allow telecom operators to pro-cure radiowaves for mobile services from other companies to meet their requirements and improve service quality. Earlier, telecom operators had the only option to procure airwaves through an auction conducted by the Department of Telecom as per its own schedule. “The government has now decided to allow trading of access spectrum as per guidelines,” an official paper said. It is seen as an exit route for loss-making telcos and offers relief to those with a large subscriber base which need more spectrum. As per the guidelines, a telecom operator can sell the right to use spectrum to another operator either in part or full holding at the level of telecom circle. “All access spectrum bands earmarked for access services by the licensor (DoT) will be treated as tradable spectrum bands,” the guidelines said. Un-like spectrum sharing, the guidelines have restrict-ed trading to presently allocated frequencies in 800 Mhz (being used for CDMA mobile services), 900 Mhz (2G and 3G), 1800 Mhz (2G and 4G), 2100 Mhz (3G), 2300 Mhz (4G) and 2500 Mhz (4G).

Both teams also go into their third match on four points. Everything points to an even contest be-tween last year’s final-ists and though stranger

things have happened, Pele — who has featured in the World Cup final which saw a record seven goals — may not see a lot of goals here. Atletico de Kolkata are set to miss a number of players. Arn-ab Mondal, Oftense Nato and Rino Anto are on na-tional duty, marquee Hel-der Postiga is injured and Baljeet Sahni has been suspended for two games.

In a historic reunion which they may never forget, the Mohun Bagan batch of 1977 on Mon-day relived their glori-ous encounter against football legend Pele in an exhibition match 38 years ago, while being felicitated by the “King of Football” himself. Sharing the stage with

Anderson could have had his second wicket in the seventh over of the match when Hafeez prodded at an away-going delivery and edged a simple catch to Ian Bell in second slips, only for the fielder to drop it. Pakistan made just 28 runs in the first hour, but gained some momentum in the second with the in-troduction of spin in the form of Rashid, who had given away 29 runs in his first six overs without posing much danger. Ear-lier, Pakistan captain Mis-

bah-ul Haq won the toss and elected to bat first. That advantage came after a major blow for Pakistan with star leg-spinner Ya-sir Shah unable to recov-er from the back injury he suffered while bowling at the nets on Monday. That left Pakistan with only one spinner, Zu-lfiqar Babar, and Pakistan is going into the match with three seamers - Wa-hab Riaz, Imran Khan and Rahat Ali. England, as expected, gave a debut to Rashid on a pitch that is expected to assist the spinners from day three onwards.

Pele, at an event in the Netaji Indoor Stadium here, the Mohun Ba-gan greats reminisced the rain-drenched Sep-tember 24, 1977, when Pele and his New York Cosmos club set foot on the hallowed crick-et venue Eden Gardens. Captained by Subrata Bhattacharya, the Ba-gan side had produced a surprising result. After conceding a goal, they rallied brilliantly to lead 2-1 for a substantial part of the game. But Cos-mos finally managed an

equaliser and the match finished 2-2. Called one by one on the stage, the Bagan players were fe-licitated by the Brazilian great who handed them a memento and a shawl as they all happily posed for a memorable click while a crowd of 5,000-odd cheered lustily. For-mer India captain and the then coach of Mohun Bagan, P.K. Banerjee told the audience how he had instructed his defenders not to go for any kind of challenge or tackle on Pele.

‘Maari dikri maari aankh saame’, ‘Maari dikri maari najar samaksh’ (My daughter before my eyes). That’s what the garba banners in Godhra say. To keep young wom-en and girls “safe” from Muslim youth and ‘love jihad’ during the Navratri festivities, the BJP and RSS affiliates are urging Godhra residents to or-ganise the traditional or sheri garba to restrict en-try and “maintain the pu-rity of the event”. Ashish Bhatt, former VHP mem-ber who now heads the cultural cell of the Panch-mahals district unit of the BJP, said: “Last year, we tried to keep out Muslims from venues of large, pro-fessional garba events to prevent love jihad. An estimated 40 per cent of Godhra’s population — the epicentre of the 2002 Gujarat riots — is Muslim. Last year, a lit-tle-known Hindu organi-sation, Hindu Asmita Hit Rakshak Samiti, decided to stop Muslim youths

from entering garba ven-ues to “avoid instances of love jihad”. Sheri garba is the traditional way of dancing in a small circle, usually on the streets and lanes of a residential col-ony where most partic-ipants know each other. The Sheri Garba Sam-vardhan Samiti, an organ-isation formed in Godhra last year, has managed to persuade residents in fa-vour of the sheri garba — 39 such events are being organised across Godhra as against one commercial garba event this year.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea by sacked IPS offi-cer Sanjiv Bhatt to make BJP chief Amit Shah a party to his petitions, al-leging his harassment for certain disclosures in 2002 Gujarat riots cases. A bench led by Chief Jus-tice H L Dattu also lifted a stay on Bhatt’s trial in two cases and junked his petition which had ini-tially sought taking away the probe from Gujarat police. Bhatt has been named as accused in two FIRs. In the first case, he has been accused of co-ercing a police constable

Calling its previous order a “mistake,” the Supreme Court on Monday refused to extend interim bail to activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand in connection with an embezzlement case, and said that only a larg-er bench should consid-er their plea. A bench of Justices Anil R Dave and Adarsh K Goel left it for a three-judge bench to take a call on whether the interim protection from arrest has to be accorded to the couple in the case of alleged embezzlement of funds meant for con-structing a museum in the

to depose before a com-mission inquiring into the riots. The second FIR has been filed by former Gu-jarat additional advocate general Tushar Mehta for allegedly hacking his emails. Bhatt has claimed these emails demonstrat-ed complicity of Gujarat government with Shah

and others who were being investigated for Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. Bhatt had recently moved a fresh plea, saying Shah and some other people should be made parties to his petition since the emails showed their collusion. He urged the court to set

up a special investigation team to probe the two FIRs against him, con-tending he did not have faith on CBI anymore. But the bench on Tuesday junked not only his fresh plea but also his main petition, in which his tri-al had been stayed since around three years.

memory of 2002 Gujarat riot victims. The court turned down a plea by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who recalled that the same two-judge bench had on September 11 ex-tended their interim bail till October 15. Appear-ing for Teesta and Javed, Sibal questioned why the same order cannot be passed now, to which the bench shot back: “Ear-

lier, it was a mistake.” “That order should not have been passed. Once the matter has been re-ferred to a three-judge bench, that order should not have been passed,” it added. When Sibal said the period of bail would expire Thursday and hence the court should pass an order considering the urgency of the case, the bench shot down his

argument, saying only a larger bench should now consider such requests. “List the matter before an appropriate bench as soon as possible, in view of the fact that this matter is to be heard by a three-judge Bench and ad-interim re-lief granted by this court on 11th September, 2015 will continue only till 15th October, 2015,” the order stated.

begun campaigning in colleges. The distribution of booklets on the EWS package was also start-ed in almost all districts, including Ahmedabad,” said Yuva Morcha presi-dent Pradipsinh Vaghela. He maintained that BJP’s youth wing workers would also visit schools as the package also in-cludes school students. “It is very necessary that stu-dents understand what the package is all about,”Va-ghela added. The BJP

youth wing has also start-ed to appoint page presi-dents and booth commit-tees. It plans to assign the duty of page president to fresh members in order to involve them in party ac-tivities. BJP has also start-ed orientation programme for new members enrolled earlier this year through a major drive. The first such session was held at the party’s state headquarters Shree Kamalam in Gand-hinagar on Sunday, but the other sessions would like-ly be held after the local body elections. Although the plea against postpone-ment of the local body polls is sub-judice, many senior BJP leaders believe elections to district and taluka panchayats will be held by the year end.
