DIABETES Diabetes is a serious disease that can cause complications such as blindness, kidney disease and heart disease, plus nerve damage that can lead to amputations. There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be managed and limbs can be saved. Since April was National Limb Loss Prevention Month, this month we’re talking about diabetes.

Many people with diabetes live long and healthful lives. According to the American Diabetes Association, in the U.S., there are nearly 26 million people living with diabetes, and more seniors have diabetes than any other age group. Currently, one in four Americans (10.9 million, or 26.9 percent) over the age of 60 is living with diabetes. With age comes an increased risk for specific complications that require diligence and care to properly avoid them.

Balancing the food you eat with exercise will help you control your weight and can keep your blood glucose in the healthy range. This can help prevent or delay diabetes complications. Over the years, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, oftentimes leading to complications. Diabetes is a manageable disease. People can live long, healthy, and productive lives if they are aware of what their body needs. Metrocrest Services will have a Diabetes 101 presentation that will be hosted by the North Texas Diabetes Association at the three facilities listed below. We invite you to join us to learn how you can take back your health, including risk factors, symptoms, and ways to avoid diabetes.

You are invited! Learn about community needs

Please plan to attend one of our one-hour monthly tours where you will learn about our programs so that you can share that information with others. Find out how our aid efforts impact the lives of local residents, and the role of local business and groups in making our community stronger. Tour our local facility, including our food pantry, and get answers to questions you have about local needs and ways you can help. At the same time, you will find out why 4,000 volunteers are vital to our aid efforts, and how you can become part of that team.

Saturday, May 7th—10:00 a.m.Thursday, May 19th—9:30 a.m.Saturday, June 4th—11:00 a.m.Thursday, June 16th—9:30 a.m.

For more information on tours and volunteer opportunities, visit our website, call Erica Mahoney, Volunteer & Pantry Manager at (972) 446-2100, or email [email protected].

Volunteer OpportunitiesApril was National Volunteer Appreciation—a time for us to thank our volunteers for the dedication and sacrifice they give to their communities. Without them, there would not be enough hands at work as we build a stronger community together. To highlight the importance of volunteerism and a vital program that could use your help, meet one of the program’s participants—Gregory. Gregory is in his mid-80s. He’s paraplegic (paralyzed from the waist down). A survivor of cancer, he suffers from two other life-altering conditions. With no immediate family, he is under the care of a hospice team and in his last days, suffers from dementia. One of the nurses, seeking to give Gregory comfort and at least one hot meal a day, called Metrocrest Services to enroll him in the Home Delivered Meals program. Now Gregory receives a hot meal from Pete’s Café and a friendly visit Monday–Friday. Volunteers make this a reality for Gregory and many other area seniors. The Home Delivered Meals program is growing and needs volunteers to drive a meal route and deliver fresh, nutritious meals.

For more information on this program and more ways to volunteer contact Erica Mahoney at 972-446-2100 or
