Sri Lakshmi was the daughter of the sage Bhrigu and took refuge in the ocean of milk when the gods were sent into exile. Lakshmi was reborn during the Churning of the Ocean. Lakshmi is the goddess of light, beauty, good fortune and wealth. While Laxmi is generally worshiped to achieve success, she does not reside long with anyone who is lazy or desire her only as wealth. It is extremely important to keep the house clean and pure on Diwali. Goddess Lakshmi likes cleanliness, and she will visit the cleanest house first. This is also the reason MahaLakshmi is worshipped on this day with offerings of haldi and kumkum (turmeric and vermilion). Before performing Laxi Pooja you must take a bath, and wear new, or at least clean, clothes. Lamps are lit in the evening to welcome the goddess. They are believed to light up Her path. Lakshmi Puja consists of a combined puja of five deities: Ganesha is worshipped at the beginning of every auspicious act as Vighnaharta; Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in her three forms – Mahalakshmi (the goddess of wealth and money), Mahasaraswati (the goddess of books and learning), and Mahakali; Kuber (the treasurer of the gods) is also worshipped.

How to perform Lakshmi Puja at home during Diwali?Lakshmi Puja is an important ritual during Diwali or Deepavali. There were numerous queries on how to do Lakshmi Puja at home? There is no straightforward answer to this question as the ritual varies from region to region. But here is a simple guide to perform Lakshmi Puja during Diwali. In 2012, Diwali Lakshmi Puja is on November 13.

First and foremost step is to clean the house. Through the puja we are inviting Goddess Lakshmi to our house and she likes everything to be neat and clean. In some communities, even the broom is worshipped on the Lakshmi Puja day. This symbolically represents the need for cleanliness.

Three forms of Shakti – Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswathi and Goddess Durga –Lord Ganesh and Lord Kubera are worshipped on the day. No puja is performed without paying customary tributes to Lord Ganesha. Lord Kubera, represents wealth, and he is the treasurer of Gods. In homes, usually the locker or safe in which gold and cash is kept symbolically represents the seat of Kubera.

Important Items Needed For Lakshmi PujaKalashMango leavesIdol or picture of Goddess LakshmiMilk, curd, honey, gheePuffed riceUsual puja SweetsCoriander seedsCumin seedsAnd other daily puja items

Lakshmi Puja Process First decide on a place to perform the puja.

Spread a clean cloth and create a bed of rice.

A Kalash (pot) is placed on the bed of rice.

Fill about 75% of the Kalash with water.

Put a betel nut, flower, a clean coin, and some rice in the Kalash.

Now arrange mango leaves around the opening of the Kalash.

Place a Thaali (a small plain plate) on the Kalash.

On the Thaali, draw a lotus with turmeric powder and place the idol or small photograph of Goddess Lakshmi.

Place some coins on the Thaali.

On the right of Kalash, place the idol of Lord Ganesha.

If you need, you can also place the idols of Saraswathi and your favorite deities.

Page 7: Sri Laxmi Pooja

Create a peaceful and calm atmosphere. The best way is to close the eyes and meditate on ‘om.’ Take some water and sprinkle on all puja items to purify them.

Do puja with haldi, kumkum and flowers on the Kalash.

Light a lamp.

Now take some flower and rice in the hands and close the eyes and meditate on Goddess Lakshmi. You are now invoking Goddess Lakshmi. If you know mantras, recite them. Otherwise just simply meditate on Goddess Lakshmi. Here is a simple Sanskrit mantra dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi.

Namosthesthu Maha Maye,Shree padee, sura poojithe,

Shanka, Chakra, Gadha hasthe,Maha Lakshmi Namosthuthe

Now sprinkle the flowers and rice on the idol of Goddess Lakshmi.

Take out the idol of Goddess Lakshmi and place it on a Thaali. Clean the idol with water, then with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. Then clean the idol again with water.

Place the idol back on the Kalash.

Now offer garlands made of marigolds or leaves of bel tree, sandalwood paste, kumkum and other daily puja items including lighting incense and agarbhatis.

Now make offerings of coconut, fruits, sweets, betel nuts and betel leaves.

Next make offerings of Batasha sweets, puffed rice, coriander and cumin seeds.

Lastly, perform a silent Arati for Goddess Lakshmi. And meditate on Goddess Lakshmi.

Take some of the ‘prasad’ (that will stay for long period of time) and place it at the place where ornaments and cash is usually kept.

Business people also worship the account books on this day along with Goddess Lakshmi.

This is only a guideline. You can show flexibility in the puja process. Some of the items needed might not be readily available. But you can keep the house and surrounding clean. Finally, if you can’t perform the puja, wherever you are simply mediate on Goddess Lakshmi.

It is an  established and proven fact that every plant or a tree will be in its full blown state ie., with full power of its abilities, on a particular day of waxing/waning Moon,  under the influence of a particular star.  That is the reason why, the produce of certain plants, show miraculous effects on some particular days.  So also,  on the "Dasami" ie., 10th day of waxing Moon, in the month of A:swi:yuja, under the influence of the "Sra:vana" Asterism, this "Sami" tree will be in its exalted state and blesses those who

worship it,  with Success.  One should realise this and ofcourse it gives  faith  too.  Then, there comes the success.

On this day, the "Sami" tree is worshipped with all reverence and devotion and a few  leaves of that tree will be  put in safe,  calling them silver and gold.  They were also put on all the instruments, weapons and tools that one works with.  Those who recognised this greatness  have adopted various methods to  utilise this opportunity for the benefit of all.  Some of them start their businesses on this day. Some  will undertake charitable activities.  Some will perform Annadanam etc.,  some will commence their projects on this day etc.  However, those who worship "Sami" tree on this day and undertake their work they will be  bestowed  with success.

The tree will be worshipped with the following slo:kas -

I offer my obeisances to Lord Nrisimha-deva, who is always giving bliss to His devotees like Prahlada Maharaja and chiselling at the hearts of demons like Hiranyakashipu. The devotee always sees Lord Nrisimha everywhere. Lord Nrisimha is within and without. Therefore let us all take shelter of Lord Nrisimha.

Prayer to Lord Nrisimha

O my Lord Nrisimha, Your hands are very beautiful like the lotus flower, but with Your long nails You have ripped apart the wasp Hiranyakashipu. Unto You, Lord of the universe, I offer my humble obeisances.

O best of the great personalities, I am not at all afraid of material existence,

My concern is only for the fools and rascals who are making elaborate plans

for material happiness and maintaining their families, societies and countries.

I am simply concerned with love for them.

TRANSLATION

My dear Lord Nrsimhadeva, I see that there are many saintly persons indeed,

but they are interested only in their own deliverance. Not caring for the big

cities and towns, they go to the Himalayas or the forest to meditate with

vows of silence [mauna-vrata]. They are not interested in delivering others.

As for me, however, I do not wish to be liberated alone, leaving aside all these

poor fools and rascals. I know that without Krsna consciousness, without

taking shelter of Your lotus feet, one cannot be happy. Therefore I wish to

bring them back to shelter at Your lotus feet.

Spoken by Prahlad maharaj.

Hiranyakashipu studied the form of the Lord, trying to decide who the form of Nrisimhadeva standing before him was. The Lord's form was extremely fearsome because of His angry eyes, which resembled molten gold; His shining mane, which expanded the dimensions of His fearful face; His deadly teethl and His razor-sharp tongue, which moved about like a duelling sword. His ears were erect and motionless, and His nostrils and gaping mouth appeared like caves of a mountain. His jaws parted fearfully, and His entire body touched the sky. His neck was very short and thick, His chest broad, His waist thin, and the hairs on His body as white as the rays of the moon. His arms, which resembled flanks of soldiers, spread in all directions as He killed the demons, rogues and atheists with His conchshell, disc, club, lotus and other natural weapons. [Bhag., 7.8.19-22]

These are 1000 Names of Lord Nrsimhadeva which were recited by Lord Brahma to calm the anger of the Lord after He had killed Hiranyakashipu.
