The Mahaswami of Kancheepuram was an embodiment of the ancient wisdom of India

enshrined in the Vedas. He represented the very essence of the Sanatana Dharma. His

teachings were matched by his life which was itself a direct message in all its completeness.

All the same, his perception of truth and its presentation were unparalleled in style and

substance. People, both the learned and the unlearned, flocked to him for kindly light, get

their difficulties and doubts dispelled by his inimitable knowledge and understanding. His

blessings knew no bar of caste and religion. He was an open book to all alike. No one

returned from his effulgent presence without the feeling of peace and tranquillity, courage

and confidence to face life.

Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati was the 68th Acharya in the illustrious lineage of Gurus who adorned

the venerated Kamakoti Peetam at kancheepuram. The Peetam

acquired a new strength during his times. The devotion, fervour and

intensity with which the Paramacharya as he was called, practiced

what Adi Sankara had preached, is unparalleled .He lived a Spartan

Life. Throughout his life, the main focus of concern and activities was

rejuvenating Veda adyayana, and Dharma Sastras and the age old

tradition which had suffered a decline. ’Veda Rakshanam’ was his very

life breath and he referred to this in most of his public discourses and

private conversations. His providing regular support to Veda Patashalas

through the Veda Rakshana Nidhi Trust (which he founded), honouring

Vedic scholars, holding regular sadas which included discussions on

Arts and culture – these led to a renewed interest in Vedic religion,

Dharma Sastras and Sanskrit. His long tenure as Peetadhipathi was the

golden era of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.

INDEED A SCHOOL WITH A DIFFERENCE............

Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Trust (Originally called Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Peetarohana Shatabdi Mahotsav Trust). The trust was formed in 2006 to take up the unique task of celebrating the 100th year of the Paramacharya’s adopting sanyasa asrama and ascending Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam as its 68th Acharya and Peetadhipathi.

To bring Mahaswami’s message of peace and happiness to a wider audience so that more people benefit by knowing about him and be influenced by his thinking.

To support the many institutions that were started during his life time and ensure that the society and country in general benefit by them.

The Trust supports several existing patashalas in various locations in India.

To lay particular emphasis on carrying out his upadesa of spreading the message of the Vedas, Vedanta and Dharma.

Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Trust was started with the following objectives

Significant Step Forward

After the centenary celebrations were successfully conducted the world over, the Trust initiated several significant steps to perpetuate the teachings of the Mahaswami for posterity. It brought out several publications on diverse subjects dwelled upon by the Sage in his various discourses. It translated ‘Deivathin Kural’ (Voice of God) into English, Marathi, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali and Assamese. It brought out ‘100 Gems of the Paramacharya’ in all the languages of the country.

Lord Mecaulay is credited with the English system of education in India. In his address to the House of Commons on 2nd February 1835, Lord Mecaulay said

“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, not one person who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them to, a truly dominated nation”.

For 187 long years the English system of education has been foisted on us. True to Mecaulay’s prophecy, we have lost our moorings and culture. Education has become a tool for job seeking. The fundamental aspects of education like character building, man making, assimilation of Ideas and in the process ennobling lives have been lost.

The Sri. Kanchi Mahaswami Trust took a significant step in 2010 towards regaining India’s rich culture, heritage and wealth of knowledge. It’s effort in this field of high endeavour is to teach our children the true meaning of education and help them understand that education is not merely a means to earn a living in order to survive but much beyond that, to realise the purpose of human birth.

Our educational system has not been adequate for the task of turning out sufficient young leaders who can lift the country out of the polluted waters of our public life and the slime and sludge of a corrupted economy. The aim of character based higher education must be to leave a residuum called culture which would teach a meaningful philosophy of life and enrich character. In adopting westernized system, our traditions and shastras have been given a go by.

Ever since, the Vedas were first revealed by Bhagwan Veda Vyasa long ago, they have always been a living tradition. Some Vedic Shakas are threatened with extinction. The oldest existing religious hymns in the World are in the danger of being fossilized on the book shelves. The following statistics is revealing.

The Vedas have come to be recognized as the repositories of all religious and secular duties. They are the treasure of India’s spiritual and social laws. All the different schools of Hindu philosophy ultimately trace their roots to Vedas.

Despite their hoary age, the Vedas maintain a code of accent, phonetics, form and sequence all orally handed down from generation to generation. The brahminical seers had such undaunted faith in the divinity of the Vedas and in the capacity of human memory, that they refused to reduce the Vedas to writing and held the future generation responsible for maintaining its purity.
