semantics

a way to give meaning to information

RDF & OWL

Microformats (hCard, hCalendar etc.)

why?

information foraging if we think of people as being task (or activity) focused, we want to provide an “information scent” that will lead users to the information that they are looking for.

Friday, 10 June 2011

why?

progressive disclosureis an interaction design technique that sequences information ... across several screens in order to reduce feelings of overwhelm for the user.

by disclosing information progressively, you reveal only the essentials and help the user manage the complexity of feature-rich sites...

Metadata & Search vs Tagging & Related Asset Listings

Firstly I had a very real problem looking for a solution & I had embarked on using Tagging & Related Asset Listings, but were unhappy with the result (& were told so as well).

I critiqued these two mechanisms (twice) to weight up the feasibility of each of the two mechanisms.

There are a great number of disadvantages with Tagging & Related Asset Listing, & only one real significant advantage.

Metadata & Search

This meme was created by Tait Electronics & Squiz NZ

This meme uses;A controlled vocabulary (the Thesaurus Asset)

Metadata Schema (several usually)

Paint Layouts

Search Pages (with stored searches)

If & when I say tagging/labelling I mean the metadata type, not the MySource Matrix tagging. (& not the folksonomy type either)

Adding & editing the content- via the simple edit interface

No creating links!

can’t go live without one

things to do

read my tutorial (& ask questions if you need to)

start small with a nice easy area

pick off an area of your site that groups content together nicely

start from the bottom & work your way up the hierarchy of the site

Friday, 10 June 2011

things to watch

don’t re-create the left navigation

make a global schema once you get a couple of areas going

terms/topics in one area of the business mean different things in other areas

some content is not meant to be found (I’m not kidding!)

Friday, 10 June 2011

where to from here

weighting of the topics/related topics

possibly with some sort of Likert scale (1 to 5)

farming the relevance from some sort of web analytics

Making the simple complicated is commonplace;

making the complicated simple,

awesomely simple, that’s creativity.
