Silsden FC
Dave McCann Says
Good afternoon and welcome to the Royal
British Legion for this home league fixture
against Silsden FC. First of all may I wel-
come Silsden management team and all as-
sociated with the club.
Today is our first fixture in December 1 fo 5 we have over Christ-
mas month. Out of the 5 games we have 4 of them are home fix-
tures. This will hopefully been advantage to us and ill be looking
for another set of results especially as we have the majority of
games on our home pitch. No games in this league are so easy
however and we wont be taking any of our opponents for granted.
We’ve found ourselves in good run off forum because of work eth-
ic that players have applied both at training and games. We only
have a small squad but I feel that this helped with the spirit that
the team currently playing with. On the flip side of having small
squad it means that injuries and unavailability soon take there toll
and with have Sean Holmes, Jack Cook and Jake Forshaw still in-
jured were digging deep into our resources for todays fixture.
Today we face Silsden who had great start of the season and will
be looking to climb the table back to where they were. They are
very strong side and have good resources to call upon if required it
should be an entertaining afternoon.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fix-
ture ………….
Maine Road 2-3 Squires Gate
Barntingham Road
Attendance: 60
Saturday 15th November 2014
Squires Gate travelled to Maine Road on Saturday looking to continue their impressive
run which has seen them lose just once in the last nine games. Gate made two changes
to the team that drew with Colne. Josh Westwood came back into the starting 11 in the
place of Alex Colquhoun who dropped to the bench, Jake Forshaw was unavailable due to
injury so was replaced with Brett Ferguson. Gate sat 9th coming into this game with their
hosts 11th but level on points. Maine Road came into the game after winning 3-1 against
Stockport Sports, whilst Gate drew 0-0 with Colne on Tuesday. Gate started the better of
the two sides and could have been ahead after just 5 minutes but Alex Murphy's strike
was always rising. Harry Dunn was next to take aim but Maine Road's keeper got well be-
hind the ball. It took the home side near 10 minutes for them to have a real chance but
their left back's shot from outside the area was tipped over by the ever impressive Ben
Fletcher. The opening goal to the game came in favour of Squires Gate. The ball falling
to Mark Buchan in the area and with the Maine keeper in no man's land Buchan had an
empty net and couldn't really miss. That makes it 2 goals in 3 games for the Scot as he
looks to cement his place and continue to make an impact. Soon after Harry Dunn had
the chance to put Gate further in front but his shot flew straight across goal. Maine Road
started to improve as the first half went on and equalised on 33 minutes. Gate struggled
to defend from the free kick and Rory Breslin scored directly from the free kick to make it
all level going into the second half. Into the second half and it started much like the first,
both teams clearly getting a telling off from their managers at half time as both appeared
early and fired up. Both teams looked a lot more attacking in the second half with both
having several chances early into the half. But it was Gate who made the chances count
first Alex Murphy beat the last man easily slot past the goal keeper on 50 minutes. Then
just 3 minutes later Murphy struck again, slick movement in the box to create space from
himself allowed him to smash the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-1 to Squires
Gate. Gate looked to hold onto their lead and for large periods of the second half had
alot of possession in their own half. Maine Road came at Gate more and more but Gate
held on and looked resiliant. Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't hold out and the home
side got there second goal late on. That wouldn't matter for Gate who stood firm to see
out the 3-2 win. The win moves them up to 8th in the table and makes it just 1 loss in 10
games. After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said: Today wasn't our most convinc-
ing performance but we did well enough to earn the win. We never got going in the 1st

A round up of today’s fixtures;
Two teams from the Premier Division play in the FA Vase today. In a all Prem-ier Division tie, it’s 2nd vs 4th, as Glossop North End play away to 1874 North-wich. Both sides conceded less then 10 goals so far this season so I’m sure it will a tight game. St Helens Town also face Tadcaster Albion in the FA Vase.
In the league, bottom of the league Bacup host 5th placed AFC Liverpool and will be out to cause an upset. Top of the league Runcorn Linnets lost last week, in what was a superb win for Nelson, but will host Barnoldswick Town today who lost 6-1 at home to Ashton Athletic last Saturday. After losing 4-0 to AFC Blackpool last weekend, Congleton face a tough trip to Colne.

Squires Gate 1-1 Winsford United AET
(Squires Gate win 6-5 on penalties)

Saturday 29th November 2014
Squires Gate hosted Winsford United on Saturday in the MEN United cup. Gate were through to the
next round after beating Nelson 3-1 in the last round. Gate have been going good of late and have only
lost one in ten. Gate made three changes to the team from the win against Maine Road, Colquhoun,
Holmes and Edmunds all coming into the starting 11.
It was a fairly even first half with both teams having chances to open the scoring. Gate striker Edmunds
having the best of the chances for the home side but his touch and shot could only find the keepers
arms. Winsford weren't without chances of their own, right back Alex Byrne causing Gate all sorts of
trouble bursting forward from defence but Gate defended well. It's fair to say that this game was Gates
most physical encounter of the season so far with alot of the first half being stopped for fouls and inju-
ries.
Into the second half was an improvement from the first. Gate put the ball into the back of the net but
saw the goal ruled out for offside perhaps controversially. Gate went ahead soon after but not before
Ben Fletcher made a quality save to keep the home side from going behind. Gate went down the other
end from the save to win the corner , in came the cross and the ball was headed down by Edmunds at
the back post and the resulting bounce back up fell to Josh Westwood who stretched to head the ball
into the back of the net to put Gate in front. It would take Winsford until the 84th minute to equalize,
hitting Gate on the break Danny Egan found the equalizer.
Neither team could find the winning goal and the task was made harder for Winsford late on when one
of their defenders was shown a second yellow for abusive language towards the referee.
Extra time was very much a one sided affair with Gate dominating the game. Chances for Hothersall
and Buchan but nothing was falling right for Gate. So to penalties it would go and with the added in-
centive of a place in the quarter finals at stake it was a tense affair. It took until the 6th penalty for us
to see a mistake. The five before had been top quality, with some people questioning why the England
team didn't have this amount of confidence in past shootouts. Steven Eyango-bwanga missed first for
the home side. Then it was the turn of Jamie McQuillan a former Gate player now plying his trade for
Winsford who would step up, but Fletcher was equal to the kick to make it all level. Andrew Richards
next stepped up for Gate to score meaning that if the Winsford player missed then Gate would be
through, Ben Fletcher was the hero again guessing the right way to put Gate through to the next round.
Gate winning 6-5 on penalties.
After the game manager Dave McCann described there next round draw against Glossop North End as
the toughest draw we could have got, but is really looking forward to it.
Match Report by Mark Ashmore.
Gate 1-1 Winsford United
Match Preview Good afternoon and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for the NWCFL fixture between Squires Gate and Silsden. We would like to welcome to the play-ers, fans and officials of Silsden.
Well, 120 minutes couldn’t separate Gate and Winsford last weekend so it was down to the pot luck of penalty shootout. I’ve always said that penalties was the worst way to lose, but maybe that’s because of England never winning a penalty shootout. Gate managed to turn it around though thanks to Ben Fletcher who done what he had to do. Gate will now travel to Glossop North End in the next round, which will be played on Valentines Day next year.
Onto today’s game, and the last time these two met was at the start of this sea-son where it ended in a goalless draw. However, we are now halfway through the season and one place separates them in the league, which comes down to Gate having a better goal difference.
Throughout our programme, we have many stats about the two sides going into today’s game. Looking at form, Squires Gate would be favourites to win this with a good home form, only losing once at home this season and are now unbeaten at home in seven league games. Silsden’s away form includes four defeats from their last six, winning only one of them.
A win today could put either side in reach of Nelson in sixth place, depending on Colne’s result it could also mean a jump to 7th.
We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and for attending today’s game. Be sure to come and grab a meat and potato pie and a hot drink from the clubhouse.
Enjooooooy the game!

Silsden Football Club
Nickname: The Cobbydalers
Founded: 1904
Capacity: 2,300
Ground: The Asda Foundation Stadium
Manager: Andy Geary
Silsden
Silsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sun-
days.
The present Saturday senior team has been playing since the 1996/97 season, starting life in the Craven & Dis-
trict Football League Division Two after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the
club.
They spent 3 years in the Craven League moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year in that division,
set a new record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West
Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division
where they enjoyed three seasons.
In season 2002/2003 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To
add to this they also won the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the third successive season, a feat only
achieved by one other club.
It was clear that the team was ready for football at a higher level and in season 2004/2005 Silsden joined the
North West Counties League. Without floodlights and an enclosed pitch, the Cobbydalers were forced to play
their home games at Cougar Park, the home of Rugby League Club, Keighley Cougars. The Cobbydalers gained
promotion to the top division in their inaugural season, finishing as runners up to runaway winners Cammell
Laird, and had their most successful runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase Competitions.
The club's aim was to move back to the Keighley Road ground at the earliest opportunity and the club(Football
and Cricket) embarked on a period of fund raising accrueing over £100,000. Finally the development took
place, with the help of a £663,453 grant from the Football Foundation, as part of its continuing investment in
grass-roots football and an additional Football Foundation grant of £300,000 through the Community Club De-
velopment Programme.
In May 2009 the building of a new clubhouse & changing facilities was completed and August 2010 saw the
completion of the ground improvements which meant a return of Silsden AFC to its rightful place.... back in
Silsden!
The Cobbydalers have maintained their position in the top division of the NWCFL and in 2015 embark on their
tenth season in the division, their best year being in season 2008-09 when they finished ninth with 58 points.
Silsden AFC have also a progressive junior set up with age groups running from Under 5's right through to Un-
der 19's. Some age groups run two teams making this one of the largest football clubs in the area. There is a
prestigious Junior Competition each year running over the first weekend of July and the club also have three
ladies teams.
With the of the folding of the NWCFL League, Silsden Reserves will be playing in the “Lancashire League” East
Division in 2014-15.
Gate 3-2 Silsden
Last Time Out
Gate ran out winners this Saturday with some impressive
first half football...
With just 60 seconds on the clock, and Squires Gate resumed
where they left off last Saturday at Maltby Main, when Jack
Sowerby's mazy run, ended with a shot from 25 yards just fly-
ing inches over the bar, and the confidence gained last week
was evident as they tore into the visitors. The home fans didn't
have to wait long before it produced results, and on 10 mins. it
was again Jack Sowerby on the spot to side foot a pass from
Ben Fishwick, giving keeper Edward Hall no chance, and put the home side into a deserved lead.
Then three mins later he doubled his and Gate's goal tally when he ran through the defence firing
a shot past the keeper on 13 mins. The running and passing of a Gate side with a handful of team
changes from when they played their last home game, going down to Wigan Robin Park, was a
revelation as to the pace and skill of this young side, restricting the visitors to very few opportuni-
ties. While their keeper was kept busy, and made a great save from Ben Fishwick back after inju-
ry, when Ben hit a 'pile driver' from a corner kick, and Edward Hall brought off a great save turn-
ing the ball round the post. But as often happens, while Gate were going forward the visitors got
the chance to pull a goal back when Michael Hall's pass found Nathan Egan, who gave Ben Fletch-
er no chance as he drove the shot past him into the bottom corner, on the stroke of half time,
sending them into the dressing room feeling they were in with a chance.
When the game resumed it was Silsden who were on the acendecy, and a fine save by Ben Fletch-
er, and the visitors efforts were rewarded when from the resulting corner, Stephan Throup, ran
through to score smashing the ball into the net on the 62 min.
This lifted the game with the pace taking it's toll on some of the players, and both teams brought
on fresh legs to try to snatch the all important winner, and it was Gate who retook the lead, on 67
mins.with what turned out to be the match winner.. It was a goalmouth scramble with several
shots being blocked on the line, but the home side was unable to clear, and a shot from Ben
Jakes, was adjudged to have crossed the line by the Referee's assistant, who was in the best posi-
tion to judge.
Silsden fought on till the end, and Ben Fletcher came to the rescue in the closing mins, when he
tipped wide a shot from, Anthony Young, This was Gate's second victory, and lifts them 2 places
up the table.
Manager Dave McCann, said after the game, "We made hard work , getting a much needed win,
in the end we deserved it pleasing that headaches with the squad. Charlie Russell, fitted in well
and was effective. We are pleased for Jack Sowerby getting on scoring sheet. He added, Lydon
Hodgkiss made his debut well and Adam did well at the back "

NWCFL Newsletter The last 16 of The Men United Cup took centre stage in The North
West Counties League fixture list on Saturday. It was two of the
First Division's high flying clubs who took the plaudits with victory
against Premier Division opponents. First Division League leaders
Cammell Laird recorded a fine 2-0 win at Runcorn Town with goals
in either half from Freddie Potter settling the tie. Second placed
Atherton Collieries recorded an equally fine win with a 4-2 victory
at Abbey Hey, but it was two goals in injury time that gave Coll's
victory and a place in the last eight.
Four goals from Lee Blackshaw and a brace from Jason Carey
gave rampant Glossop North End an 8-0 victory over a shell-
shocked Widnes. Remarkably, it is the second time this season
that Glossop have won 8-0, having also recorded a 7-0 win and
two 6-0 wins earlier in the campaign. Alsager Town recorded a 2-1
win over AFC Liverpool and West Didsbury & Chorlton won by the
same score against Rochdale Town. Two ties went to extra time
with Bootle edging their game 2-1 at home to AFC Darwen while
Squires Gate and Winsford United drew 1-1 after extra time before
Gate progressed through 6-5 on penalty kicks.
In the Premier Division, leaders Runcorn Linnets missed the oppor-
tunity to extend their lead at the top when they fell to their first
league defeat of the season, 2-1 at Nelson. An Ian Rowlands hat-
trick helped Ashton Athletic to a 6-1 victory at Barnoldswick Town
and lifted them into third spot in the division in the process.
Two goals from Aaron Fleming helped AFC Blackpool to a 4-0 vic-
tory at Congleton Town, but it was a result that flattered the visitors
who scored twice in the dying minutes of the game. Elsewhere, a
brace from Christopher Wademan gave Silsden a 2-0 win over
