`ROUND THE SQUARES (continued from page 5)

We will be holding demonstrations at various malls, etc., in our area in August and September, and will start our classes immediately after the fall convention. We have names of people that are already signed up, and we'll take your names to add to the list - so that we can keep these people advised on our demo dates, etc.

Please help us spread the word about the upcoming class. We encourage sing-les and couples to attend. For more in-formation contact Buck Fish, Nick Filone, Martin McLain or Gordon Lentz.

+ +++++ DIXIE DERBYS: Our new officers are: President, Rowland Dudley; Vice Presi-dent, Joe Sugden; Secretary, Lorna Gold-stein; and Treasurer, Marty Ewer.

Our largest class ever, graduated on April 22 with 55 dancers receiving their diplomas.

+ +++++ EASTONAIRES: Congratulations to our officers who are all returning for another term. They are: President, Earl & Judy Rohn; Vice President, Reita Graham; and Treasurers, Bill & June Lesko. We welcome recent graduates to dance with us on Mondays nights. Congratulations!

+ +++++ EDGE HILL SQUARES: It is with genuine sorrow that we report the death of Bob Graham on April 8, after a short illness. Bob and his wife, Thelma have been charter members of our club since its in-ception in September 1957. Bob held many responsibilities throughout the years. He never said "no", only, "I'll see what I can do". Our prayers and sym-pathy are extended to Thelma and the family. Bob will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Class and workshop will be held on Ju-ly 7 and 14 from 8:00-10:30 PM.

+ +++++ FLUTTERWHEELS: Our new officers for 1986-87 are: President, Butch & Faye Geiser; Vice President, Jeff & Barbara Bond; Treasurer, Steve & Marianne Welenteychik; Secretary, Bill & Connie Kries; and Epicurean, Ted & Judy Holmberg and Max & Blanche Treiber,

+ +++++ LEISURE SQUARES: We will not be dan-

cing during July and August. A special dance was held on May 8 for

Hattie & Lou DeLeau, our club's founders, who plan to move to New York state to be near their children. Proceeds from the dance were given to them to help start a senior citizen's square dance group in their new neighborhood.

+ +++++ LENTZ'S LOFTERS: Our new officers to begin on September 1, 1986 are: Presi-dent, Dick & Betty Roberts; Vice Presi-dent, Doris McCrossin; Treasurer, Elsie Marcolina; and Secretary, Ed & Mary Ann Heller.

This summer, and running through the current 1986-87 season, we will host guest callers at each dance. See the list of guest callers and also our ad in this issue. We welcome all dancers to come and join us. For more information call Ber-nie & Joan Marcus at 275-8255.

+ +++++ MELODY LAKES BELLES & BEAUS: In May we changed our dance nights to Tuesdays. There will be no workshop in July.

+ +++++ PERKY PROMENADERS: We will be dancing our regular schedule throughout the summer at the Church-On-The-Mall, Plymouth Meeting. We have a wood dance floor and air conditioning, so come out and join us!

+ +++++ POCONO SQUARES: Watch for flyers on activities we will be having for the next two months.

+ +++++ QUAKER EIGHTS: Our 16th Annual Din-ner Dance was a big success! The food was superb as always and Jim Snyder called a great dance. Jim and his brother had everyone in stitches while doing a special number. Frank & Grace Fertsch did a fantastic job as usual and a great time was had by all.

We recently graduated our first class. Dot Breisch baked and decorated a cake and everyone made their own sundaes. We wish to thank Jim Snyder for coming to Quakertown every Monday to teach class. We wish to extend our congratula-tions to the class and may they enjoy dan-cing for many years to come.

FEDERATION MEETING NEWS UPDATE

If you weren't one of the approximate 135 dancers at the Free Federation Meeting Dance and Election of Officers held on April 27, at Our Lady of Help Christians Church in Abbington, you missed an excellent dance to the great calling of John Kaltenthaler and Peg Dockry. This year the host district was Mid-East Penn and they did a fine job of putting this dance together.

Dancing began promptly at 2:00 PM with a business meeting beginning at 3:15 PM with an opening prayer by John Lachenmayer. After committee reports were given, President, Bill Manuel ask-ed for a report from the Nominating Com-mittee, John & Kathy Falter, who an-nounced that all officers were willing to run again, and since there were no nominations from the floor, he asked that the secretary cast a ballot for the slate of officers as follows: President, Bill & Doris Manuel; Vice President, Doug & Ethel Vollmer; Treasurer, Frank & Connie Evans; and Secretary, Marguerite Scadding.

Bill Manuel then introduced his commit-tee chairpersons who were present.

Bill Manuel reported on the Wildwood Spring Weekend and was most pleased to report that there had been an increase of 350/s in attendance over last year. Ap-proximately $1300.00 will be turned over to the Federation. A full report of the weekend was given by Co-Chairmen of the Weekend, Wil & Lorraine Kent, at the June 13 Board Meeting held at the Dunfey Hotel in Philadelphia. At this time, Bill made a recommendation that the

FEDERATION BOARD MEETING HIGHTLIGHTS

The Federation of Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancers board meeting was held at the Dunfey City Line Hotel on March 13 where the following items were discussed.

1) The Federation will host an After Par-ty at the 35th National Square Dance Convention in Indianapolis, on June 28, 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM, in the Convention Center (Hall "B"). M.C. for the evening will be Bob Clark and national callers, Lee Kopman & Earl Johnson will be calling with the Easterdays cueing rounds.

2) Membership update - We have an in-crease of 118 members over last years count. Congratulations to all three districts!

3) Roger & Marion Owings reported that they are having problems obtaining

Liability Insurance because insurance companies are no longer writing these policies for groups. If anyone knows of a company that does supply these policies, please notify Roger & Marion.

4) The 26th Delaware Valley Square and Round Dance Convention received permission to raise registration fees by $1.00 per person due to an increase in costs of callers and hotel registrations. The registration fee will now be $35.00 per couple and $18.00 per single.

5) Two square dance clubs were voted into the Federation. Say hello to King's Squares from King of Prussia and Elk Town Twirlers of Elkton, Maryland.

6) This year's convention registrations are really adding up - over 1,000 to date. Don't wait until the last minute to sign up - better do it now or you will be left out. There will be no walk in registrations.

7) The Advisory Committee met one hour prior to the meeting and went over changes in the Statement of Policy and Guidelines of the Convention. During the meeting the changes were made and

NEWS UPDATE ON THE FEDERATIONS "WILDWOOD

SPRING WEEKEND"

The Federation of Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancers "Wildwood Spring Weekend" is over, and it was a great weekend of dancing and fun. Wil & Lorraine Kent, chairpersons for this event, are to be commended for their efforts in creating such a great weekend.

Enough can not be said for the callers, Bob Clark and Glenn Matthews, and our cuer, Steve Bradt, for programming two evenings of enjoyable dancing and two mornings of relaxing squares and rounds.

On Saturday evening, after the dance, we were entertained by a group of talented square dancers from the First State Squares who put on a variety show. The show featured the "Razzle Dazzle Band"; the toe tapping of "Twinkle Toes", Betty Terrell; the magic of Dick Terrell; the rendition of "On The Good Ship Lollipop" by Curley Top, the darling of the yuppe set Bill Manuel; the "Blue Boot Boys", Bill Faunce, Darrell Lewis, Dick Terrell and Bill Redding, with their memorable melodies; the one act playlet, "Dancing At The Ritz", by the not so famous characters Evie & Bill Faunce and Fran & Maxine Waegel; and last but not least, the "Golden Slippers Dance

Troupe", Bill Faunce, Darrell Lewis, Paul Talley, Bruce Arnold and Bill Redding with their interpretation of "Autumn Leaves". The entire show was directed by a very capable couple, Fran & Max-ine Waegel.

It was very heart warming to see an in-crease of 35% in attendance at this "Wildwood Spring Weekend" to that of a year ago and with this kind of interest, we hope that the Federation of Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancers "Wildwood Spring Weekend" will con-tinue to grow.

Thanks to all who attended and again Wil & Lorraine Kent - it was great!

More than 575 callers and partners attended this prestigious three day event. The overall attitude at this convention was one of ge-nuine caring for the needs and wants of the dancers. The resolutions that were passed reflect a concern for the long range well-being of the square dance ac-tivity and are sure to be considered carefully by dancers as well as callers.

Among the significant awards present-ed this year were the following:

Small World Awards were presented to callers attending a convention for the first time from a non-North American location. The recipients were Heiner Fischle from West Germany, Chris Froggatt from Australia, Ted & Sheila !yin from England, and Holger & Petra Willm from West Germany.

Those overseas callers who attended for the second time were Verne & Jean Anderson from New Zealand and Yona & Al Chock from the Netherlands.

The Chairman's Award, presented to a non-Board member for significant con-

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED AT THE RECENT

CALLERLAB CONVENTION

Among the resolutions passed at the Callerlab Convention in Baltimore on March 26, 1986 was a resolution dealing with the realignment of the calls within the Mainstream program that might be defer-red for later workshopping. This reflects the reduced use of some calls in selected areas and will not affect existing Main-stream programs in areas where there are Mainstream clubs. The intent is to allow callers and clubs to teach new dancers a program of calls that reflects the dance program of the sponsoring group. In many areas of the United States and Canada as well as many overseas locations where a dance program of Mainstream calls as published is being danced, the adjustments will not affect the teaching series of classes.

in other areas, where the predominant dance program is Mainstream with some Plus calls, the realignment will reflect the calls which can be deferred to a later time. In some of these areas, the class time is limited to 25-30 weeks and some calls just cannot be properly covered in

that period of time. Concurrent with this, a special commit-

tee was formed to review the existing Mainstream and Plus programs to deter-mine if a suitable "Learn To Dance Pro-gram" can be covered in a 25-30 week (lesson) time frame. Again, it is emphasiz-ed that, where the existing clubs have a strong Mainstream program, there would be no change. There is no intent to force clubs or dancers to learn one or more figures from the existing Plus program.

We welcome suggestions or your ideas on any of these programs. We encourage you to send your thoughts and ideas to the Callerlab Office, Box 679, Pocono Pines, PA 18350. We will forward your views to the respective people involved so that your views are considered before a recommendation is formed. We an-ticipate a preliminary publication some-time this summer.

Linear Action and Zing were both add-ed to the C-1 program and, therefore, have been dropped from the Advanced Quarterly Selection list.

Current Advanced Quarterly Selections as of June 1, 1986 are: Change Lines, Checkover, and Mini Busy.

CALLERLAB PLUS QUARTERLY SELECTION

Gene Trimmer, Chairman of the Plus Quarterly Selection Committee, is happy to announce the selection of one call as the Plus Quarterly Selection for the quarter beginning May 1, 1986. The call is Relay, Cycle & Wheel (R.C.W.) by Wade Driver.

RELAY, CYCLE & WHEEL (R.C.W.)

Starting Formation: PareIlel Right Handed Ocean Waves.

Definition: All Swing 1/2 by Right, Cen-ters Cast Off (Left) 3/4, Ends Circulate 1/2. Wave of six does a Grand Swing Thru, new end of wave Circulates while lone-some circulator moves forward to become the end of the wave of six. New wave of six all Cast Off (Right) 3/4 to form a momentary column of six. Leader (Out-facer) in column does a U Turn Back while the momentary Two-Faced Line which has formed with the lonesome cir-culators and the two very center dancers in the column of six does a Wheel & Deal. Ends in a Double Pass Thru formation. Timing 20-22 Counts.

Comments; The author specified, in his original correspondence, that the starting formation for this call was from parallel right handed ocean waves. The original definition was changed somewhat to clarify some of the actions taking place during the flow of the call. Left hand ac-tion is possible but not advisable unless dancers are well versed in all positions

LEGACY COMMENTS ON "AFTER GRADUATION,

WHAT'S NEXT?"

Spring usuallly heralds the graduation of thousands of new square dancers around the country. We rejoice with them in their accomplishment and tip our som-brero to the callers and angels who work-ed diligently to train these welcome new-comers to the square dance world.

Unfortunately, our rejoicing may be short-lived if we do not continue to work to serve the needs of these new dancers and make them feel welcome. The ques-tion we need to ask ourselves is, "After graduation, what's next?" Do the new dancers have a place to practice and en-joy their newly acquired skills, or are they faced with a summer hiatus and a wide gap between what they have been taught and what their club is doing?

The problem of the summer hiatus can be solved in many ways with special dances and social outings during the

summer to help assimilate the new-comers into club activities. Solving the problem of the gap between class and club often is not so easy, and failure to solve that very problem accounts for a large number of dropouts - dancers who become discouraged and frustrated because there is no place for them to dance and have fun with what they already know.

All too often an attempt is made to solve the problem by rushing the new dancers into another program during the summer so that (supposedly) they can begin to dance with the club in the fall. Thus, we see a plethora of Plus work-shops during the summer that are filled with new dancers who have not even had the opportunity to practice their Main-stream skills. Not only are the dancers be-ing rushed into a new program much too quickly, but many of the workshops are too short for what they pretend to do. Callerlab recommends that a new dancer dance the Mainstream program regular-ly for at least one year before he or she attempts the Plus program. This summer rush often only compounds the problem and produces dancers who are proficient at neither Mainstream nor Plus and who are, therefore, doubly frustrated,

As graduation time is a time of rejoic-ing, the transition time also should be a time of rejoicing. Let's all work to make it so. Let's make it a time during which new dancers find the fun and enjoyment they have been working for, a time dur-ing which they find the acceptance and friendliness they have a right to expect. We have told them that square dancing is fun. Now let's prove it!

WHAT ARE "MINI-LEGACIES?"

It is never too early to plan a mini-Legacy for the dance leaders and poten-tial leaders in your area. What is a mini-Legacy? Really nothing more than a seminar or meeting to train leaders, ex-change ideas, and try to solve some of the problems facing square dancing today.

Mini-Legacies are conducted annually in many states and take many different

22

Page 23: Squares and Rounds July-august 1986 · SQUARES and ROUNDS Published for Mid-East Penn District Federation of Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancers Vol. 11 No. 6 July/August 1986

forms and some interesting acronyms such as LUST for Let Us Sit and Talk. Some invite speakers from other areas to conduct some of the sessions and/or to give the keynote speech. Others rely upon their own state resources. Most follow a pattern of a general meeting followed by smaller "break-out" sessions on various subjects, and then some sort of "wrap-up" session. Many include a fun evening of dancing relaxation along with the hard work, often with the guest speaker calling the dance.

Frequently, state square dance organ-izations have accumulated funds from the state festival and other activities and are searching for good ways of using the money to help the square dance activity. What better way than to provide leader-ship training? Surveys of every kind show that one of the big problems facing square dancing today is lack of leader-ship. Many clubs have disappeared from the scene because no one would take an office or did not know what to do once in office. Offices often go unfilled because we do not make the job rewarding in

terms of satisfaction and self-esteem. Mini-Legacies provide a forum for ex-amining ways to promote leadership and making leadership roles satisfying.

Legacy is a leadership-communication resource center. If you would like help in organizing a mini-Legacy in your area, contact Walt & Louise Cole, Mini-Legacy Chairman, 944 Chatelain Rd., Ogden, UT 84403. 801-392-9078.

LEGACY EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR NATIONAL

SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION

Again this summer Legacy will par-ticipate in the educational program of the National Square Dance Convention. A number of interesting subjects, important to the square dance activity, will be discussed during the three days of the convention, June 26, 27, 28, 1986, in In-dianapolis, Indiana.

On Thursday, June 26, from 1:00-2:00 (continued on page 24)

SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION (continued from page 23)

PM, Chet Vetter will be moderator for a discussion on "Dancer First Aid Kit" by Bill & Donna Anderson. It is a subject all club leaders should find helpful and in-teresting. The same day from 2:00-3:00 PM, Bill & Donna Anderson, Bill & Col-leen Wilton, and John & Freddie Kalten-thaler will discuss "Caller-Dancer Rela-tionship". Chet Vetter will again moder-ate. The smooth functioning of a square dance club requires understanding and cooperation between the caller and the dancers, particularly club officers. This discussion should provide ideas for im-proving that spirit of working together.

"Square Dance Preservation" will be the subject of discussion on Friday, June 27, from 1:00-3:00 PM. Dan & Mary Mar-tin, Cathie Burdick, Bill & Colleen Wilton, and Jerry & Becky Cope will provide a variety of ideas for keeping our favorite form of recreation hale and hearty throughout the years. Gordon Goss will moderate and make sure that each of the fine panelists gets an opportunity to be heard.

Last, but not least of Legacy's presen-tations will be on Saturday, June 28, from 1:00-3:00 PM. I should be a rousing one with the idea taken from surveys in which many dancers tell us that we need to put the fun back into square dancing. Walt Cole will keep the peace as John & Fred- die Kaltenthaler, Stan & Cathie Burdick and Bill & Donna Anderson tackle the challenging question: "Fun - If it is gone, where did it go, and how can we get it back?"

Legacy invites callers, cuers, dance leaders, dancers and other interested parties to join in these timely discussions. Your idea of suggestion may be the very one the square dance world has been waiting for!!

LEGACIES "HOT LINE" FOR TROUBLE SPOTS

A Hot Line for Square Dance trouble spots has been and continues to be main-

tained. An individual or group spotting a potential problem to the activity (inap-propriate advertising as an example, or unethical conduct on a major scale) simp-ly contacts one of these volunteer listen-ing posts. The one contacted in turn con-tacts the others and depending upon the situation, the square dancers across the nation can be alerted within a few hours. The following people are just a phone call away. Bob & Dottie Elgin, 412-744-2015; Dan & Mary Martin, 404-736-2440; Vera Chestnut, 608-845-6622; Bob & Becky Osgood, 213-275-4725 (home) or 213-652-7434 (business); and Stan & Cathie Burdick, 419-433-2188 or 419-433-5043.

CALLERS COLLEGES
