Welcome to the second decadeof this century. It is a good time tore-evaluate what is truly impor-tant in our lives, and how we canmake things better for ourselves, our familiesand our community. The past coupleof years havebeen hard on manypeople, financiallyand emotionally.Sometimes, all a personneeds is to know that some-body cares about them. One wayto achieve this is by “Growing aRow” – planting an extra row ofvegetables for the Food Bank. Itis only a few extra seeds or seedpotatoes, but a little extra effortcan make a big difference in theconstantly depleted stocks at theFood Bank. When you are order-ing by mail (from T&T Seeds, forexample) or going out to buy your

seeds and plant stock from, forexample, Apache Seeds at 10136– 149 Street in the next fewweeks, please consider planting alittle extra this year. Potatoes, car-rots, beets, beans, peas, etc. – allare welcome by the Food Bank fortheir clients. The family or singleperson who receives the veggies

may not know who theycame from, but they willknow that someone

cares about themby taking the lit-tle extra time

and effort to growthose veggies forthem.

See you in March!

THE DIRTY GARDENER IN THE DRAGONFLY DEN

MICHELE HEBERT

Right around this time of year Istart itching to garden. (Well, truthfully, the itch starts inJanuary already!)

You might wonder just what kindof gardening can be done whenthe ground is frozen solid and cov-ered with the white stuff.

This is the time of year to dream. . . and to start seeds.

I began to grow plants from seedmany years ago with little suc-cess. Every spring I would look atwhat I had managed to growunder my florescent light andthink “Wow, what a lot of work

for plants that don’t look muchlike the ones I can buy at a gar-

den center”. My poor little plantbabies would be tall and floppy orjust teeny tiny. I would get so dis-couraged that I’d throw out all myplant pots and vow never to startplants from seed again!

The following winter, I would startthinking that maybe I’d just tryone more time . . . maybe thisyear I would do better.

After a few years and a bit ofresearch, my plant babies beganlooking pretty good and I startedbranching out a bit from my triedand true annual varieties and trieda few perennials with fairly goodsuccess. I was hooked!

Starting plants from seed doesn’tcost too much money and it is soexciting to see those tiny greenshoots popping up through thesoil while outside the snow isfalling or a cold wind is blowing. The promise of spring is rightthere in front of you! Another bigbonus is the amount of moneyyou can save as well as the abilityto plant a little more generously. After all, 12 petunias don’t take upthat much more room than sixwould.

Every year around this time I get

together with my gardeningfriends for a seed party. Everyonebrings something tasty to eat, seeds they would like to share andbooks or magazines with new gar-dening ideas. Some friends don’tstart seeds but come to visit andget new gardening ideas. We chatabout the perennials we are think-ing of dividing that spring and seeif anyone is interested in plantingthem in their gardens. I love to gothrough my garden and enjoyNicole’s irises, Andrea’s coral bellsor Evelyn’s French tarragon.

This year we wanted to open ourdoors to everyone in the JasperPlace area (Not my literal doors . . .I don’t think everyone would fit intomy little house!) We will be holdinga gardening party in the BritanniaYoungstown community hall.

We hope to share seeds, ideasand perhaps start some discus-sion about what we might like tosee when it comes to gardens inour neighbourhoods. Communitygardens, food plants like cherrybushes or strawberry plantsamong our park plantings, ormaybe fruit trees planted in ourschool yards.

We hope to see anyone who’sinterested in gardening whetheryou are interested in seed startingor just gardening in general. For full details, check the commu-nity news listings under Brittania-Youngstown on page 8 of thisissue.

If you have any questions or ideasfeel free to give me a call. Rosa780-471-5301

THIRD ECO STATION NOW OPEN

A new Eco Station in the City’ssouth west is making it easier forresidents to dispose of their wastein an environmentally responsibleway. The Ambleside Eco Station, located at 14710 Ellerslie Road, isa new drop off point for householdhazardous waste (HHW), electron-ics and items too large for regularcollection.

Edmonton’s two other EcoStations are running at full capacity. In the last five years, traffic at EcoStations has increased an average16 per cent each year. This thirdEco Station will relieve pressure onexisting facilities and meet futuredemand as the City grows.

Edmontonians know it’s impor-tant to bring household hazardouswaste to an Eco Station ratherthan putting it out with regulargarbage. Waste from Edmontonhouses, apartments and condosgoes to a composting facilitywhere organic material like foodwaste, grass and leaves is com-posted while non-compostableslike plastic and textiles are filteredout. Keeping HHW out of thegarbage maintains the high quali-ty of compost produced. As a

bonus, most material brought toan Eco Station is recycled. Paint, motor oil, car batteries, computersand electronics are just a fewexamples.

In 2009 for instance, Eco Stationsrecycled 170,456 fluorescent lighttubes (which contain toxic mercu-ry). Laid end to end, they wouldspan 208 kilometres, or theapproximate distance fromEdmonton to Edson.

You be the Judge…Restaurant Review

Tasty Tomato14233 – Stony Plain RoadReview submitted byBob Olynyk

Tasty Tomato is my favorite Italianrestaurant. The staff is friendly, and the service is excellent. Asthere are no reservations on theweekends and only for largegroups during the week the idealtime is to get there before5:30PM or after 7:15PM to get atable without a short wait. I havewaited and during the wait havebeen served a complimentaryglass of wine well standing in line. The premises have been totally

renovated to give diners a warmand homey feeling while enjoyingtheir meal. We usually go withanother couple and always orderBruschetta for an appetizer, whichis a meal in itself, and totally likenothing you have ever eaten. It isa baked pizza crust with just theright mixture of tomatoes, onions, garlic and oil. This along with a literof the house red wine just getsyou going. With all of the pastabeing homemade it is hard tomake a decision on which to order. My wife usually orders theCannelloni with the sauce half redand half white; she receives twohuge tubes smothered in sauce, which are made to perfection. Imyself usually have the Veal

Parmesan which is served with anunforgettable tomato sauce andthe pasta of the day accompaniedby a side Caesar salad. The Caesardressing is very tasty as well, theRomaine lettuce is always crispand fresh.

Usually by the end of the maincourse there is no room for desert, although the Italian Pear shapedice cream smothered in Chocolateand hazelnuts is one of myfavorites. The prices are very rea-sonable; the extensive menumakes it very difficult to decidewhat to order. The spaghetti andminiature meatballs are a treat andwould be a great hit with childrenwho dine with you. I have triedseveral different items and havenever had a bad meal. They alsohave daily specials that your serv-

er will informyou about.

From our plan for Alberta's economic recovery to electricity transmission to blazing a trail towards more environmentally friendly resource extraction, we havetaken extraordinary steps to help ensure that our province remains a great place to live, work and raise a family. Highlights from the past year include The Way Forward,

our comprehensive four-point plan designed to bring Alberta back into the black and the passing of Bill 50 - The Electric Statutes Amendment Act, 2009. This year, we also introduced the amalga-mation of Alberta's regional health authorities into the new Alberta Health Services, created a new provincial pharmaceutical plan that will see Albertans save considerably on generic prescriptiondrugs, and committed to funding a number of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in order to decrease Alberta's carbon emissions. As a government, we will remain focused on our objectivesand on leading our province toward renewed prosperity.

The Way ForwardThis bold plan will see Alberta back in a budget surplus position and saving for the future within three years. It will do this by limiting government spending, using our cash reserves in the Sustainability Fundto cover a portion of our revenue shortfalls, continuing to invest in public infrastructure in order to prepare Alberta for when growth returns, and continuing to promote our industries abroad to ensure that Albertaremains competitive and attracts investment.

Our focus during this period of recovery will be on helping seniors and low-income Albertans, and supporting the programs and services that Albertans need most, such as health care, education and seniors' benefits. This will all be done while keeping taxes low. Our government recognizes that we cannot tax ourselves out of this recession, and as such, remains committed to ensuring that Alberta has the most competitive tax rates in the country.

Lowering prescription drug costs for Albertans2009 also saw the introduction of an enhanced provincial drug plan that will see the reduction of prescription drug costs for all Albertans. Under the new provincial strategy, all new generic prescription drug prices were immediately reduced to 45 per cent of the brand-name price, and starting in April 2010, the price for existing generic drugs will also be reduced. This new plan will saveAlbertans, employers and government a considerable amount of money, improve prescription drug use and help our province provide better care to Albertans and improve their overall health.

To learn more about AHS, the Alberta Pharmaceutical Strategy or Vision 2020, please visit www.health.alberta.ca.

Carbon Capture and StorageThis year, the Government of Alberta also announced a $2 billion investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. This investment shows our commitment to clean energy production and will maintain Alberta's economic and competitive advantage. The expertise and knowledge that will be generated from the projects supported by this investment will make Alberta a leader inCCS technology, providing skills that can be shared around the globe as we search for ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

CCS technology can also be used for enhanced oil recovery and helps increase the production from existing reserves. That means that the hard to reach oil from conventional reserves can be accessed. Thisincreased production will translate into greater royalty revenues being collected by the province; revenues that will help ensure the delivery of programs and services in Alberta.

For more information on Alberta's investment in CCS technology, please visit http://www.energy.alberta.ca/Initiatives/1438.asp.
