Spring/Summer 2015
Animal Rescue League of El Paso is a No-Kill Shelter and a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.
Twenty Years! For the last twenty years Animal Rescue League of El Paso has served El Paso and surrounding areas by rescuing and adopting dogs and cats and educating the public in animal welfare. ARL has been truly blessed with the support of the community, businesses, volunteers and donors for the last twenty years. During the last twenty years 1. Animal Rescue has adopted over 20,000 pets. 2. Pick-up over 218,400 lbs. of poop! 3. Fed over 509,000 lbs. of food 4. Scooped at least 468,000 lbs. of kitty litter 5. Put together over 10,000 cages 6. Washed/brushed over 10,000 dogs 7. Vaccinated over 20,000 animals 8. Opened over 300,000 cans of pet food 9. Filled over 1,019,000 buckets of water 10. Spay/neutered over 20,000 dogs and cats 11. Cried over 7,000 times or more 12. Did over 58,240 loads of wash 13. Washed over 1,019,000 bowls 14. Put on over 20,000 collars 15. Loved them all!
If you haven’t heard yet, Smokey has been adopted! What is so
special about this adoption is, Smokey was with Animal Rescue
for over 1171 days! When Smokey first came to ARL, he was
scared and very cautious toward humans. He was very picky who
he would let into his “circle.” The people he did let in he really
loved. A very unique trait in Smokey was he had this way about
him that helped calm some of the more shy and scared dogs. Every dog that
was put in with Smokey ended up being adopted. Yet Smokey was still at the
shelter. One of our volunteers started featuring
Smokey on our Facebook page. Although the
response was encouraging nothing was panning
out until…...one person responded how much
Smokey looked like their dog and how shy and
scared their dog was. Well you can see where this
was going. After meeting with the family it seemed
like this possibly could be the perfect match. Boy
was it ever, just after being with the family for a
short time their shy and scared dog started
changing and Smokey really seemed like he knew
this was what he
was supposed to
do. Smokey fit
right in, loving
his human and
four legged
family, giving the
family just what
they needed.
Smokey finally has his forever home.
ARL is still adding to our reflection garden! ARL started the garden to memorialize/honor pets and animal lovers alike. Money raised will go towards caring for the current animals at our shelter. The bricks have been placed in the courtyard at
Animal Rescue League to create the garden. Please come by anytime to see the dedications.

Last November, ARL started our “Rescue Runners” group as a way to get some of the bigger dogs in our care some much needed exercise. Many of the dogs in our care come from situations where they have never had much socialization or formal training, and may be new to running and even walking on a leash. Having these skills makes them more adoptable and
gives them a better chance at finding their Forever Homes. So, a couple times a month on Saturday mornings, we load up 8-10 dogs and drive out to McKelligon Canyon and match them up with a Volunteer Running Buddy to do a 2.5-5 mile run. The dogs love it! As dog lovers, we all know what it looks like to see a dog smile, and we get big smiles out on our runs. During the run, at the water stops along the way, and cooling down afterwards, the dogs get so much attention from their running buddy and really form strong bonds just in the couple hours we are out there. Anyone who participates as a runner or a water stop volunteer will tell you it is nothing but fun. The runs also provide an opportunity for our adoptable dogs to meet new people that could possibly be their new Forever Family. We always keep our paws crossed for that! We never could have known what a success the event would be, but we are so thankful. To become a Rescue Runner (or Walker) please send us your name, contact phone number and email address to [email protected] so we can add you to the email distribution list. Every month we send out the new dates so you can sign up for a run. Summer runs start at 7:15 am at the entrance to the canyon. Hope to see you there!

Dogs….do not ruin their sleep worrying about how to keep the objects they have and to obtain the objects they have not. There is nothing of value they
have to bequeath except their love and their faith. Eugene O’Neill
Running of the Chihuahuas 2015 Animal Rescue League is celebrating their 3rd annual
“Running of the Chihuahuas” What a fun and hilarious event. It just keeps getting bigger! Last year “Chico” visited and this year “Miss El Paso” has agreed to make an appearance. Miss El Paso is a former ARL rescue, aka Gertie and we are so proud of her representing El Paso as an ambassador to welcome visitors to our beautiful city. She is being featured in ads promoting El Paso.
This year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 19th from 4-7 pm. Races open to Chihuahua and Chihuahua mixes and a special “Under 25 lb.” category for small dogs. We will have prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for Chihuahuas and 1st place prize for the “Under 25 lb.” category. Entry fee for the race is $20 per dog. Great raffle prizes, music, food trucks and vendors too! We will also have a costume contest
again for all dogs with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners. All leashed dogs are welcomed. Please check our Facebook page and website for entry form and information closer to the event date. If you would like to be a sponsor for the event please call the shelter.
Animal Rescue League is always participating in different events throughout the year. On May 2nd, ARL held their 14th annual “Dinner With Friends”. Plans for next year are already in the works. We have also participated in the Pet Fair at the Westside Dog Park, “Dance For Paws” at The Outlet Shoppes of El Paso, The Dog (and cat) Days of Summer at Joe, Vinny & Bronson’s Bohemian Café, Braden Aboud Memorial Walk/Run, PetsBarn Adopt-a-thon, and Ft. Bliss Block Party. ARL also has adoption events at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing Farmer’s Market (attending the last Saturday of June, July and August), Tractor Supply and every Saturday at the west side PetsMart. Please check us out on Facebook for up-to-date postings of upcoming events. Like us on Facebook!

ARL is truly thankful for all the individuals, students, organizations, and businesses that have donated their time, money and items to
help ARL this year. In addition because of the unfortunate break-in at ARL in March the community overwhelmingly responded in a way “Thank You” doesn’t seem to do it justice. Please know we can not keep doing what we do without all of you and appreciate it more than you know. Thank you to Vista Markets, Ivan Iniguez, Paul’s Grooming, several Boy and Girl Scout Troops, EPCC Northwest Campus, St. Clements School, Students of the Centennial, Franklin H.S. Educating our young children about the importance of spay/neutering, vaccinations, micro-chipping, caring for a pet, careers that include working with animals and what a no-kill shelter does is so important for Animal Rescue League. We want to thank Ysleta E.S., Davenport E.S., Western Hills M.S., Bradley E.S., EPCC NW Early College H.S., and El Paso Country Day School for inviting us to visit.

FYI The City of El Paso Environmental Service Department (ESD) held community meetings to get the community’s input regarding making some changes to the City’s animal ordinance (Title 7). Subjects discussed included the removal of the microchip requirement and limiting the number of animals per household. Because of the community input the city will still require microchips. But for the microchip to properly work they need to be nationally as well as locally registered. It is our responsibility as pet guardians to ensure microchip information is kept up to date. If you are not sure please call 1-888-466-3242 or the phone number on your pet’s microchip. Also discussed was to limit the number of animals per household. According to Title 7 there is no limit and no changes will be made regarding this issue. However it is our responsibility as pet guardians to make sure our pets are not a nuisance to our neighbors, are properly cared for regarding shelter, water and food, up to date on vaccinations and keeping our yards clean.
