Paying for College Financial AidFinancial aid is available for eligible students. Students and their families do not necessarily need to be considered low-income to qualify for some kinds of financial aid, but students must demonstrate financial need to be eligible for federal assistance. Even if you’re receiving financial assistance from agency sources (L&I, VA, DVR, WorkSource, WorkFirst), you may be eligible for additional grant aid from state and federal financial aid sources. We determine eligibility by comparing the difference between the cost of attending school and what you and your family can afford to pay.

Apply EarlyStudents are encouraged to apply for financial aid as early as possible since pre-qualification may take up to eight weeks from your application submission date.

Eligibility for Financial AidA student maybe eligible for financial aid if he or she is:• Attending Bates to obtain a degree or certificate• A U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen• Making satisfactory progress in a program of study, as defined by the institution’s satisfactory progress criteria• Not in default on any previous student loans or owing a refund on any grant • Registered for the draft with Selective Service, if required by law • A high school graduate, a GED completer, or earn passing scores on the COMPASS exam

Aeriele Johnson, Legal AssistantA Civil ActionAeriele Johnson was busy during her final year at Bates. From serving as treasurer on the Associated Student Government (ASG), where she made budget presentations to the Board of Trustees, to participating in the annual Legislative Cookie Day and the Students of Color Conference, Aeriele said she’s learned to be a leader.

The Legal Assistant graduate also learned that her heart belongs to the legal field. Aeriele just concluded a five-month internship in the civil division of the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office.

“It would be my dream to work at the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office,” she said. “I learned so much during my internship, and it impressed upon me that this is where I want to be. The job is complex, so the fact that I did it makes me feel like I can do anything,” said Aeriele.

It’s an incredible accomplishment to have had an internship for that length of time in the prosecutor’s office, she noted.

“Anyone can say they have [legal assistant] experience, but to be able to say that my experience was at the prosecutor’s office is a big deal. Because of that internship, my resume’ just got longer with the skills and knowledge,” she said.

The Foss High School graduate enrolled in Bates because of her mother’s encouragement. “My mother attended Bates, and she’s the reason I came here. I love that the emphasis is hands-on learning,” she said.

If it wasn’t for Bates, Aeriele said she wouldn’t be doing anything significant. “My instructor and the staff helped me grow, earn my degree. My instructor was the reason I got my internship.”

Aeriele sat for her Accredited Legal Secretary exam in December, and spends her free time searching for her dream job at the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office. •

For these international students, it’s all about the teeth.

Santiago

Santiago Zayco, Dental Lab Technician, International StudentSantiago Zayco came to Bates by way of Wenatchee, where his uncle, a denturist, lives. He enrolled in a local community college to pursue a nursing degree, but because of encouragement from his uncle, decided to switch gears and work toward becoming a denturist.

A native of Bacolod City, Philippines, Santiago said his uncle gave Bates high recommendations, and spoke of his own success in the profession. “I liked the flexibility of being able to own my own clinic someday,” said Santiago, who started the Dental Lab Technician program in 2009 while waiting for a spot to open in the Denturist program.

“Being in the dental lab program will ultimately make it easier for me to understand dentures in general,” he said. “I like that as a denturist, I’ll be able to work with the public and see different people all the time.”

Santiago hopes to start the Denturist program this spring. After he earns his associate of technology degree, he will return home to gain work experience and eventually open his own business.

“If it wasn’t for Bates, I would have never thought it would have been possible for me to be a denturist.”

Page 7: Spring/Summer 2012 Class Schedule

Sunju

Jae Hoon Choi, Dental Lab Technician, International StudentJae Hoon Choi came directly to Bates from Pusan, Korea, in 2009 to enroll in the Dental Lab Technician program. His aunt, a former dental lab technician who lives in Buckley, told him about the profession and spoke highly of Bates.

“Bates is my first American school, and I found it really easy to talk with my instructors,” said Jae, pronounced Jay.

Jae enjoys his experience at Bates. “I know people from different backgrounds, and I now have American friends. It’s different from Korea—everything is different. American people smile a lot, and there is a drive-through for everything.”

He noted that while instructors John Howard and Kris Merriman help make learning terms and concepts easier for him, his peers are also easy to turn to when questions arise. “My classmates are really helpful and kind. I really appreciate them.”

And even though there is a language barrier, Jae is learning the elements of the program with ease. “The style of teaching is great, especially for international students who need extra help understanding terminology.”

After earning his associate of technology degree, Jae plans to continue his education at a four-year college. He still has three quarters left at Bates, so when you see him around, be sure to welcome him—and flash your big American smile.

Sunju Jeon, Dental Lab Technician, International StudentTwo years ago, Sunju Jeon came to America for a new experience. She participated in a homestay and took English as a Second Language courses at a community college near Seattle.

A dental hygienist in her hometown of Changwon, Korea, Sunju, who pronounces her name Soon, decided to transfer to Bates’ Dental Lab Technician program so she could both learn English and pursue an associate of technology degree in the field.

“Bates has helped me to learn English, and I love the dental lab program and my new friends,” said Sunju, now in her fourth quarter.

She noted that Laurie Arnold, the college’s international student advisor, was very friendly and helpful, and she always spoke clearly to make sure Sunju understood.

Sunju appreciates that her instructors are easy to talk to. “When I don’t understand something, I can ask a question or my classmates will help me out.”

When asked her advice to international students seeking a similar experience, she said, “Do your best, so you can finish and work toward your goals.”

And that’s exactly what Sunju is doing. After she graduates next year, her goal is to work in Korea as a dental lab technician.•

“If it wasn’t for Bates, I would have never thought it would have been possible for me to be a denturist.”

Adult Basic Education (ABE/GED/ESL)Our English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) preparation classes help those who need to improve mathematics, reading, and writing skills. Classes transition to general education classes as skills improve. In some fields, adults can start career education programs while enrolled in ABE/ESL classes. GED preparation classes help students prepare to take the required five tests for high school equivalency. Bates offers ABE, GED, and ESL classes at the Downtown and South Campuses, and at these off-campus locations:

Mercy Housing Tacoma Hillside (ESL) 1805 South ‘G’ St., TacomaTacoma Resource & Opportunity Center (GED) 1016 South 28th St., TacomaTacoma Goodwill (GED) 714 South 27th St., TacomaSalishan Family Investment Center (GED, evening)1724 East 44th St., TacomaFor more information, call 253.680.7274.

General EducationTo satisfy degree and certificate requirements, students need to complete certain general education (GE) classes. Career advisors and faculty can help you create an education plan that will keep you on track for your goals. Contact a career advisor for more information on course descriptions and prerequisites.

General education classes are open to career education students, high school students and others pursuing college credit or preparatory goals and include college-level and college-preparatory courses. COMPASS scores and the course work help determine prerequisites you need to complete. Some students may need to build basic skills in mathematics, reading or writing before taking a general education course.

Associate degrees and certificates of competency require completion of a specific number and distribution of pre-college and college-level GE classes. Requirements vary depending upon the career education program, the credential, and the track a student chooses to pursue. Each career education program has a unique delivery plan that identifies the quarters in which students should take general education classes.

Desirae Hobbs, CarpentryA Solid Career

As a youth, Desirae worked alongside her dad on a variety of construction projects. This experience helped lay the foundation for a career in the industry. In 2010, the Eatonville High School graduate took the first step toward earning a degree in the field. She enrolled in Bates’ carpentry program.

“I came to Bates because of the emphasis on hands-on learning,” said Desirae, who recently helped build a house in Lacey as part of a class project. “Because of my dad, I knew the basics, but Bates is teaching me the technical terms and other aspects of the job.”

Being a female in a typically male-dominated industry does not faze Desirae, who said her classmates treat her well. “You’re here to work, you’re here to learn,” she said. “In the industry, people want more women because it balances the equation out. Women have a different perspective, varying opinions, and often pay closer attention to detail than many men working in the field.”

To Desirae, Bates is a place where people can start their careers. “Here, you can get solid footing in your skills and know for certain this is where you want to be, and what you want to do before you go out into the industry.”

Desirae is currently awaiting entry as an apprentice in the carpenters union.•
