    PAYS A VISIT TO KERN

    California Perspectives Student

    Art Exhibition sponsored by the

Bakerseld Chapter of the Sierra Club

Mr. David Dik, the newly appoint

    national executive director of Youn

    Audiences Arts for Learning, who

works at their headquarters in New

York City, came to visit the Arts Coun

    in February. The former managing

    director of the Metropolitan Opera

Guild started out as a music teache

25 years ago, a trade which is helphim now to understand the issues o

    arts- and arts-supported education

He is currently traveling around the

country to visit with the staff and

    community leaders of the Young

    Audiences afliates, like the Arts

    Council of Kern.

His visit started out at a breakfas

    meeting to connect with educators

    from Kern County, including repres

tatives from Arvin, Fairfax, Lost Hill

    Maricopa, and Richland (Shafter)

    School Districts. Teaching artist, Na

    Dove, provided entertainment and

    shared his classroom experiences.

    Arts Council Board members who

serve on the Arts Education Committ

    were also in attendance.

He met also with funders and

    potential funders of the program,

    enjoyed a demonstration by two

    teaching artists in training, visited

    with the Kern County Superintende

of Schools, and nished with a mee

    and-greet with board members and

    staff.

    In a conversation, David pointed

out how important it is to expand ou

Kern County core of teaching artist

and to develop high quality curricul

a task we are working on right now
