Ed Hamel has been a member of the Turnverein since 1995. he lives in Feeding Hills with his wife Laura. He has a son Robert, and a daughter Karen who are also both members. Ed and his wife also en-joy their 3 grandchildren who live close by. Ed had worked for Mass Mutual for 29 years as a computer support specialist, and has recently retired from Hartford Insurance Company where he worked for 11 years in the same capacity.

Ed’s first position with the Turnverein was as Membership Chairman, which he did for many years, until he took a break to focus on his job. He chaired the Oktoberfest for 2 years, and has also been on the Oktoberfest Committee. In addition to these commitments, Ed was also the move manager for the transition from the old club on

Garden Street to the new club in Feeding Hills. Ed first became involved with the Turnverein be-cause he was a leader for the Boy Scouts sponsored by the Turnverein and the club asked the scout leaders to join the club. He also had a close relationship with the club due to the proximity of the club to his home, making it convenient for his family to participate in events.

The main job of the secretary is to take accurate minutes of any official club meetings, keep them organized and on file for any future reference. He is also in charge of promotion and publicity, for the club, and is always looking for the next cool spot to put an ad for the Turnver-ein!

Ed’s favorite thing about the club is the relaxed environment that the club has. The friendly people, and the relationships he has developed over the years with members and their families gives the club a feeling of “gemütlichkeit” or fun, friendship, and good times. One thing that Ed said he would like to see happen with the club in the future is to promote the “Sound Mind/Sound Body” aspect of the Turnverein. Perhaps forming an informal partnership with an or-ganization that can bring some form of athletics or physical activity that members can participate in . He wants to keep the German heritage of the founding fathers and incorporate German food, and the German culture into the club so all can remember the history of the Turnverein.

Gemütlichkeit

The word 'gemütlichkeit' is used to describe a lovely restaurant, home or other setting, meaning a cozy, welcoming, comfortable at-mosphere... not mere cordiality or friendliness.
