andand John Matheson. John Matheson. The creation of a new flagcreation of a new flag stirred a national debate. Many Canadians were strongly attached to the Red Ensign, the British Union Jack and Canadian coat-of-arms on a red field. It had been used, officially and unofficially, for generations.

The debate started in 1964.The final design was picked on December 15th, 1964; Queen Elizabeth ll proclaimed it official on January 28th, 1965.

There were so many options for the Canadian flag, but Matheson didn’t think any of them were right for the country. Finally, the committee decided on the flag that we know today.
