However, you can rely on various institutions and funders who take on the costs by establishing a central open access fund, making it part of their general funding or paying the fees as part of a membership model.

Together with BioMed Central we offer an Open Access Membership Program which enables academic and research institutions, societies and funders to actively support open access publishing by covering the costs for their individual authors. If your institution is a member you can publish in any SpringerOpen and BioMed Central journal at a reduced rate or even no cost at all.
