Issue 9 March 2013 Hayley is top of the class Springboard Hartlepool continues to forge new links with employers in the Tees Valley Region, and one young apprentice has really hit the right note with her employer. Hayley Williams has been employed as an Apprentice Teaching Assistant with St. Cuthbert’s RC Primary School in Stockton-on-Tees since last year, and has made a big impression on the Head Teacher Julia Douglass. Julia said: “Hayley has been a wonderful addition to my teaching team here at St. Cuthbert’s and has worked well with pupils and staff alike. She has been offered a position as a Teaching Assistant for the next academic year, which is great news for us and for Hayley”. It is not the first time that the school has worked in co-operation with Springboard who supply suitable candidates for interview and deliver the training and qualifications to the apprentices for the term of their contract. In return the employer not only fills a skills gap but can also gain a valuable new member of staff. In addition employers can also take advantage of a £1500 grant currently in place to encourage employers to develop their business and take on new apprentices. Julia added that she would love to continue to work with Springboard apprentices in the future and Centre Manager Carl Fox agreed: “Forward thinking employers like St Cuthbert’s RC Primary are taking advantage of the benefits of working with young apprentices and finding that there are many rewards involved. We look forward to working with Julia and the school again.” continued over

Fit forWorkSpringboard Hartlepool’s sportprogramme continues to grow fromstrength to strength.

We are now offering young people theopportunity to work towards achieving aLevel 2 qualification alongside our currentLevel 1 award. These trainees will gain abroad knowledge of the sports industry bytaking part in many sports, understandinghealth & safety procedures and gainingexperience at leading groups themselves.

The Springboard Sport programme hasnow begun using the recentlyrenovated gym at our Peterlee site.

The gym consists of industry standardcardiovascular and weight trainingequipment. The gym allows learners theopportunity to experience a newenvironment that they previously may nothave had chance to before.

Learners are required to undergo a fullgym induction prior to using the gymunder suitable supervision. Students arealso put through a series of fitness tests toestablish current levels of fitness and toenable them to understand what areasthey need to work on and improve.Students will be shown various differentmethods of training and exercise givingthemselves ideas of how to reach theirgoals. The students are then required to

For the third successive year,Springboard Hartlepool is working withEndeavour Trust. Endeavour Trust is an excellent organisation who work withour young people over a 6 week period. The young peopleare challenged to complete and overcome various outdoorand adventurous situations that will push them past theirusual comfort zones. The course is an excellent way to bringthe young people together,encouraging good team work and trust.

Studio news.....

There’s a new posse in theTower Design studio now thatour 2012 apprentices haveflown the nest!

The crew of TD13 are a good mixof new and more experiencedgraphic designers who take onthe challenge of working in abusy studio in Tower Street whilstfurthering their qualifications andgetting some practical skills.

The new team consists of NathanMalone 17, Curtis Taylor 17, LiamDefty 18, Jack Milburn 18, Nicol

Bee 16, TomPattison 19 andGavin Connor19. StudioManager HelenSmith said:“The studio hasbeen producingsome excellentwork lately, andour customersare over themoon with theservice andquality of ourproducts. That is

primarily down this creative lot, whowork hard and produce great designsfor our clients.”

Whilst employed in the studio theteam work towards level 3qualifications in Digital Artwork forPrint. This along with invaluableexperience will help them progressinto the graphics field or use it as astepping stone to university.

In August 2011 SpringboardHartlepool changed the way thestudio operated and how thegraphic design apprenticeshipswere delivered.

Candidates are now interviewed forsuitability and employed within TowerDesign to work on customer productswhilst working towards their

Advanced Apprenticeship in DigitalArtwork for Print.

This has proved a successful ventureincreasing productivity in the studioand improving customer products inthe process.

Of the original team who successfullycompleted their qualifications in2012 Grace Jones 18, continued hergraphic design studies and is currentlychoosing a university to attend. HayleySwainston 19, is working in marketingand promotions. Jake Taylor 19, isreally enjoying his Animation DegreeCourse at Northumbria and Joy Wilson19 is doing well in her first year

studyinggraphics at Cleveland College of Art andDesign. Meanwhile, Louis Hannon 19,found employment with a local printfirm and loves his new role there.

All of the apprentices enjoyed their yearin the studio, and know the experiencewill help them in their future careers.

Sweet P’s Garden Centre based on Ladysmith Street in Hartlepool hasrecently taken on a new horticulture apprentice Aaron Wintersgill fromSpringboard and invested in qualifications for an existing member of staffTomas Latimer. They are also currently in the process of recruitingapprentices in Customer Service and Business Administration to help inother areas of the company, giving fantastic opportunities to youngpeople as this new business grows from strength to strength.

The garden centre boasts a superb selectionof annuals, perennials, shrubs, exotics, topiaryand trees. It also has a lovely coffee shop,fresh farm foods, greeting cards, gift shopand beautiful fresh flowers. Springboard willbe supporting the Sweet P team throughoutthis process ensuring a blooming goodoutcome on both sides!

We are moving......but only next door! Springboard Hartlepool iscurrently expanding into the adjoining premiseswhich has recently been vacated by MillerConstruction on completion of the new college.

This new office space along with our existing centre will enable usto increase our current provision for Foundation Learning, offerbetter classroom space and IT facilities for young people, andallow us to have a dedicated reception and entrance for the TowerDesign studio in Surtees Street. More on this in the next edition.
