1. PROJECT SUMMARY

***Students today are surrounded by technological enticements. In a world where students at a young age are introduced

to such technologies as cell phones, video games, tablets and computers, it is vital for educators to use technology to their

advantage. Young people are becoming vastly superior to many adults when it comes to different forms of technology.

Educators need to harness these skills and capitalize on them when preparing instructions for students. One such toolthat is becoming more and more prevalent is the iPad tablet. The iPad allows educators, parents and students to take

education to the next level. There are countless apps for educational use, most of which cost very little or are free. It is

also extremely user friendly allowing even the youngest of students to have success when creating projects on the iPad.

One such app is Toontastic which allows young students to create a story with illustrations and narrations. This particular

app has an array of story scenes and characters. Toontastic allows the student to create a story arc complete with setting,

plot, main idea, conflict, and resolution. The students can also narrate their story and animate their characters. This

particular app has set parameters to ensure that the students will stay on task and keep their story on track. This app is

completely user friendly allowing even the most reluctant student to complete a story with success. Students will love to

see their final project as the present their stories to the other students in their classroom over the Smartboard. The best

part of this project is that the students will be so engaged in what they are doing they will forget that they are actually

learning the elements of a story. When students enjoy what they are learning it becomes more meaningful to them.

Learning the elements of a story aids students in reading comprehension. It also helps them begin to appreciate different

types of stories. The project is designed to teach the elements of a story to first grade students in order to introduce them

to a love of reading and writing at a young age. Over the course of the next few months, each first grade classroom will be

put into small groups where they will conference with either their teacher or media specialist to create a story. Then once

stories are completed they will use the Toontastic app to create their story arc. The app requires students to have each

element of a story in order to complete the project. Students will create settings and characters as well as narrate their

stories. Once the final project is complete each group will share their story with the other peers in their classroom. The

use of the iPad and the Toontastic story app will create a deeper understanding of stories for students as well as

encourage them to begin writing their own stories. This project is geared for first grade but can be used across grade

levels and curriculum areas to encourage writing and storytelling.

2. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Project Objective #1: To provide students with opportunities to enhance and extend reading literacy,writing, and storytelling abilities while increasing their understanding of different types of technologyand media.

Common Core Standards:

CC1RL2: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding or their central message

3. TARGET POPULATION

***The target population is approximately 100 first grade students including English Language Learners, gifted students, andstudents with IEPs.

4. PROJECT DESIGN

December 2012- researched different apps to use for teaching story writing to first grade students. December 2012- researched cost and benefits of iPads in a classroom/small group setting. January 2013- complete and submit grant February 2013- order iPads to begin teaching reading literacy/story writing lessons. Also, plan collaborative

meetings with first grade teachers.

March-April 2013- using iPads, students in first grade will develop, write, illustrate, narrate, and present their storiesto their fellow peers.

5. RESULTS AND EVALUATION

***Success for this project can be measured on many different evaluation instruments that include STAR test results, MAPcores in reading, and CRCT scores in reading. Teachers will also collect anecdotal evidence when having small groupinstruction. Teachers and media specialist will conference with students to aid them in the writing process. Teachers willcollaborate over the grade levels to determine the effectiveness of this project in other grade and curriculum areas.

7. COLLABORATION

The media specialist and first grade teachers will collaborate to create age appropriate writing lessons for this project.

These collaborative first grade lessons will allow students and teachers to have access to iPads and available educational

writing apps. Teachers will also allow time in their classroom for groups to meet and discuss their stories. Classes will meet

back in the media center to conference with adults and better expand their writing.

8. DISSEMINATION AND EXPANSION

This will be shared with other media specialists in county wide meetings. Other teachers in different grade levels will be

shown how this lesson was successful and how it can be used across grade levels and curriculums. The grant will also be

shared in our school Focus article. This project could also be shared at the county Technology Fair.
