Varicose and spider veins present a cosmetic problemfor many women as well as for men. These

abnormally bulging and discolored leg veins can cause avariety of symptoms. These include discomfort, fatigue, throbbing, burning, swelling, phlebitis, discoloration andulceration.

An office procedure called Endovenous LaserTreatment (EVLT®) has revolutionized the managementof varicose veins. It has become the state-of-the-arttreatment for this problem and has eliminated the needfor traditional surgery. Under local anesthesia a thin laserfiber is placed through the skin and seals the mainmalfunctioning leg vein. The procedure takes less thanan hour and has become very routine for most vascularsurgeons. Because of its ease there is no age limit and itis covered by most insurances.

The laser technique eliminates the cause of thevaricose veins. The veins themselves are removed byadding a procedure called phlebectomy. Small veinhooks are used which are passed through needle sizedopenings. The residual holes close without the need forsutures. Sometimes this is done as a separate procedure.

Spider veins are treated with a technique calledinjection Sclerotherapy. Tiny needles are used to inject aspecial solution into the veins. Some veins resolvequickly and some fade away gradually. Multipletreatment sessions may be needed depending on theextent of the problem.

After people have either EVLT® or Sclerotherapy theycan return to their normal activities right away. Bothmethods have been used for many years and have been proven to be very safe and highly effective. Mostpeople are quite pleased with the cosmetic results andthey experience improvement or resolution of theirsymptoms.

If you have problem varicose or spider veins youshould be evaluated by a vascular surgeon specializingin venous disorders. After examining you and performinga Venous Doppler Study (ultrasound) the vascularsurgeon will be able to determine if you are a candidatefor EVLT® and Sclerotherapy.

I find many people get nervous about eating while onvacation. Some think they will have no control over

their eating, while others believe they use traveling as anexcuse to over-eat.

As a weight loss coach since 1988, I haveencountered these concerns repeatedly from clients. Iam an avid traveler, and someone who is conscious ofmaintaining my own weight. From my personalexperiences, and the feedback I receive from my clients,I can help you to get the most from your travels. You’llenjoy food without being deprived, and return withoutthe dreaded weight gain.

As I look at the many souvenirs I’ve brought backfrom trips, they bring fond memories of scenery, history, laughs, family and so much more. The souvenir I don’tbring home is extra body weight. Yet when I travel, I eat.I can still taste Austria’s Goulash Soup, Ireland’sShepherd’s Pie, Belgium’s Belgian Waffles, France’sCrepes, Puerto Rico’s Chicken and Rice, Italy’s Gelato,Spain’s Paella, numerous buffets… must I continue?Identify the difference between eating and over-eating.Eating is enjoying food. Over-eating is when you nolonger taste the food. You are stuffed, yet continue to eat.

When you travel your sleep patterns differ, yourspending habits change and your activity level will alsobe out of the ordinary. Doesn’t it make sense then, thatyour eating will also differ? This is your vacation eatingand it’s completely different from your normal eatingpatterns. When I ask clients to prioritize their travelevents, eating is never number one; usually it’s four orfive. Write a list and prioritize the events foryour upcoming trip. See where eating fits in,and keep it there.

Here’s how you make vacationeating easy: Always peruse food offered and use a

rating system, one to ten, ten being best.Enjoy foods you rate six or higher.Everything else is just mediocre to you. Eatonly the foods you rate highly.

If you eat every time your companions ask you to trysomething, you’ll gain their weight, too. Eat only whatappeals to you, not to the crowd.

You may believe you have no control of what or whenyou’ll eat, especially if you are staying in someone’shome. Be in charge of what you choose. Make choicesfrom what’s available, and speak up when necessary.

Part of the lasting memory and experience of yourtrip is the food of the region. While there, taste andenjoy the local cuisine that you desire.

Proteins, fruits and vegetables are sometimes ignoredwhile traveling, opting for an overload of carbs andsweets. Remember to include foods that nourish yourbody every day, helping you to eat well throughoutthe entire trip.

Pack clothes that fit you well, are comfortable, andgive you freedom of movement. Don’t bring clothesstating, “I’ll give up, and eat anything andeverything.”

Keep your digestive track moving; avoid being backedup and bloated by drinking plenty of water. Try hotwater with lemon. Your vacation will remain morepleasurable when you enjoy your food without beingstuffed. You’ll sleep better, feel terrific and beenergetic and lively throughout the entire trip.

One last suggestion:

Don’t even think of weighing yourself for one weekafter returning. Allow your body weight tolevel itself as you return to your normal eatingpatterns.

Let me know if you have furtherquestions, and I’d love to hear about your trip.HAPPY TRAVELS!

Getting ready for spring andsummer entertaining is easy in alight and airy room with a view.

by Natalie Weinstein, Allied ASIDDesigned by Natalie Weinstein

Photographed by Jack Ader, Images for Presentaation

If any season can be associated with a definiteinclination to decorate, renovate and get your home inorder, it has to be spring! The term spring cleaning,

dating back to before the turn of the century, inspiredmany feelings. It meant untold back breaking hours ofwork beating rugs, white washing woodwork, polishingsilver and cleaning the house from top to bottom. But withit came the great satisfaction of cleanliness, orderlinessand the newness of Spring. In addition, winter sewing andquilting projects added new touches, and the first breath ofcolor often came straight from the garden.

Our human need to renew as the earth does is anotherreason why spring is the busiest design season of the year.In truth, however, if people wanted to be ready for spring, they would prepare in the winter, but most people don’tthink ahead until there is strong evidence of the season’schanging. Then frustration abounds when shoppers findan 8 -10 week wait for furnishings to be delivered. Impulsebuying ensues, a dangerous pastime since purchasingwhat you can have immediately may not be the bestpossible long-range decision. Further, starting with aninappropriate purchase (wrong color, scale or style) mayput you on a one way street to continued misdirection.

10 Steps to Spring Redecorating Do a real clean-up and throw out. Organize closets, discard clutter, purge and simplify your surroundings. Thiswill not only provide a sense of satisfaction but will forceyou to make intelligent decisions about items you need orwant. Now you can see which furnishings can stay and lookwell with just a “face-lift”. Make a plan in writing. Using graph paper and a ruler, make a plan of the room, measuring the pieces you’d like tokeep as well as the room itself. Moving the furniture onpaper saves a lot of wear and tear on your back and enablesyou to see many options. Now, rearrange the furniture according to your plan.Look at the furniture carefully bearing in mind whichpieces may need re-upholstery, as well as new furniture tobe added. Try to visualize the end result.

Don’t forget your plan whenyou shop. Be flexible. If you findsomething you really like and yourplan can be modified, buy it. If,however, your purchase will causehavoc with what exists as well asyour budget, wait. Look further.Diligence and patience go a longway in decorating. If you are on a limited budget, painting, repairing andslipcovering can make trulyamazing changes to existingrooms. If you are handy and cando some or all of the laboryourself, you can stretch youmoney even further. If you’rehiring labor, get references andsee their work. Think color for spring! Be alittle daring even if only on accentpillows or a “feature wall”. Remember, your front doorarea, porch and walkway canmake the entry to your homespringlike and colorful just by adding flower pots of lovelyannuals. Vases of fresh flowers in the home can brightenevery room as well. Set a plan in place to get your back yard ready forspring and summer entertaining. (Plantings, furniture, barbeque, etc.) Visit the Resource Center of the Natalie WeinsteinHome Decorating Club for a fast, fresh look for any room, using designer fabrics, wall coverings and ready-madebedding, at discounted prices. When you have a challenging design project which isbeyond you, seek professional advice. It will save you timeand money in the long run and will allow you to enjoy theresults without the additional stress on your already busyschedule.

No one likes an unsightly gap. But what are your options? The gold standard to replace a missing tooth is the osseointegrated implant on

which is attached an implant crown. The implant crown looks and feels like a naturaltooth. But because implants require surgery, the implant patient must be in goodhealth. The patient also needs to have adequate bone to support the implant. Thisexcellent service is also more costly than other options.

The second option is the fixed bridge. Here, teeth on either side of the missingtooth are covered with crowns to which an artificial tooth is connected. The bridgeis then cemented in place. Disadvantages are that the teeth on either side of themissing tooth have to be reduced to accommodate the crowns and three or moreteeth are now connected, making it difficult to clean underneath and a potentialfood trap.

The third choice is the removable partial denture. As it is removable, the partialdenture is less natural than the implant or fixed bridge. The partial denture takesgetting used to, it may feel bulky and you may not be able to chew as you wouldwith natural teeth. The advantage is the relative simplicity of the procedure andlower cost.

You may not be a candidate for the implant, the fixed bridge or the removablepartial denture. Your dentist can best evaluate which options are suitable for a givenclinical situation. It is important to replace missing teeth because other teeth willdrift into the gap and the entire dentition may be compromised. For moreinformation on replacing missing teeth visit www.drterryshapiro.com.

Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry

By Dr. Terry S. Shapiro - Serving Long Island for over 20 years

TTwo prospective patients came intothe office recently with the samecomplaint. Both had lost all of theirteeth and were wearing worn-outand ill-fitting dentures. Theirdentures were loose; they hadtrouble eating foods they wouldhave liked; their faces had thatsunken-in look and they were inpain.

Their previous dentists recom-mended implants to stabilize thedentures. The problem was that asthey were both retired and on fixedincomes they could not affordimplants. What to do? Yes, implantsare a wonderful service and haverevolutionized what we can do toimprove lives. I love implants! Butdue to the laboratory and materialscosts involved, they are expensive.

My approach is different from

other dentists. I make new, custom-fitted dentures for my patients andexplain to them that if the newdentures don't fit and function well,we can then add implants. Myexperience is that the denturepatient does very well with the newdentures and often decides not toadd the implants. Implants arealways an option but they don’t haveto be the first option. I believe thatpatients like these can be well servedwith well-fitting dentures.

Good news for homeowners age 62 and older who are lookingto achieve greater financial flexibility: MetLife Bank has

recently introduced the HECM Saver, a government-insuredHome Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM). Some features of the MetLife Bank HECM Saver reversemortgage that may make it an option worth consideringinclude:• Lower up-front costs as compared to the standard HECM

reverse mortgage offered by MetLife Bank, could save youthousands of dollars depending on the value of your home.

• While the maximum amount you can borrow is less than with aHECM Standard, the HECM Saver may be a better choice forhomeowner who don't need to borrow the maximum amountavailable to them.

Like other types of reverse mortgages, with a HECM Saver:• You still live in and own your home.• You can use the increased cash flow to pay off your existing

mortgage, travel, reduce credit card debt, help cover health carecosts, and much more.

• You can receive your cash in a lump sum, as a monthlypayment, through a line of credit, or a combination of thesechoices.

With the MetLife Bank HECM Saver, you must continue to beresponsible for paying property taxes, homeowner's insurance,

and for maintenance of the home as your primary residence. However, you can use the cash from your HECM Saver proceedsto help pay for some of these costs. Repayment of a reversemortgage isn't required until the last surviving borrower passesaway, sells the home, or leaves it for 12 consecutive months.Do you qualify for a MetLife Bank HECM Saver? Here are somegeneral guidelines:• All borrowers must be age 62 or older.• Your home's first mortgage doesn't have to be paid off, but you

will need to have sufficient equity in your home.• The home must be your primary residence.

Learn more about the MetLife Bank HECM SaverThe best decisions are informed ones. If you're interested in

learning more about the new HECM Saver or other reversemortgage options from MetLife Bank, your MetLife Bank reversemortgage consultant, Jacqui Del Priore, is available to answer all of your questions, without obligation. Call Jacqui at 516-983-9396.

One of the most commonly unaddressed healthconditions in America today, hearing loss affects more

than 31.5 million Americans, most of whom are belowretirement age.

Hearing loss can strike at any time and at any age. When left unaddressed, hearing loss can affect virtuallyevery aspect of an individual’s life. Numerous studies, infact, have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide range ofphysical and emotional conditions, including irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, avoidance or withdrawal from social situations, socialrejection and loneliness, reduced alertness and increasedrisk to personal safety. Other effects may be impairedmemory and ability to learn new tasks, reduced jobperformance and earning power and diminishedpsychological and overall health.

Despite the far reaching impact hearing loss has on somany aspects of an individual’s life, many people who areaware that their hearing has deteriorated are reluctant toseek help. Unfortunately, too many wait years, evendecades, before getting treatment, becoming more andmore disconnected as time goes by.

The fact is that with modern advances in technology, there are solutions for many. In fact, 90-95 percent of peoplewith hearing loss can be helped with hearing aids and theirquality of life significantly improved. Hearing aids hold suchgreat potential to positively change so many lives, yet onlyone of five people who could benefit from hearing devicescurrently wear them. The audiologists at Smithtown/Sayville Hearing Services can provide solutions to manyhearing problems at any budget.

Is Paul Anthony your real name?Of course not! No one can spell or pronounce my real last name, including

my family. Anthony is my middle name and I started using it as my “business”name about 20 years ago and it stuck. My real last name is Mongelluzzo, whichin Italian means Eat! Or you’ll lose weight!

How long have you been performing stand-up?

That’s one of the questions I get a lot. People somehow equate experiencewith talent. While on the surface it seems like a pretty straight forward question,I always get a little philosophical about it. Truth be told, I really believe I’ve been“performing” for as long as I can remember. At about the age of 10 when I wasin grade school I became the biggest fan of comedian Steve Martin. My Mombought me an album of his live stand-up. I would sit in my room and listen tothat album over and over again. I actually memorized his entire act, and wouldthen perform it in front of my family, verbatim. Can you imagine the level ofpatience my family had? I even had my own arrow-thru-the-head prop which,if you know anything about Steve Martin, was his signature comic gag.

So your family encouraged your sense of humor?

Growing up in a big family, I was always the clown. At holiday time I wouldtake our video recorder and make comedy tapes with my siblings and cousinsto play for the family after dinner. These skits would feature impressions ofrelatives, neighbors and an occasional celebrity. The laughter and fun I saw thatI was able to bring to my family encouraged me. However, it would be manyyears before I actually performed on a stage.

How did you finally get started instand-up?

After graduating college I began mycareer in radio broadcast sales and the dream ofpursuing stand-up comedy took a back seat. Over the yearsI found that my greatest sales attribute turned out to be mysense of humor. I learned that clients enjoyed working withsomeone that could make them laugh. It helped me buildrapport and made them comfortable, so I continued to usemy sense of humor with both clients and co-workers. Itwasn’t anything I really thought about; it was just me beingme. It was at WALK Radio that I received the mostencouragement to pursue stand-up. I had been doing a sortof “end-of-year” roast at the company Christmas party eachyear, which reminded me of the times I would make myfamily laugh when I was a kid. I finally committed to givingstand-up a try.

Can you give us a little bit of back history about comedyon Long Island?

Long Island has a great history of famous stand-upcomics. We’ve all heard the stories of Jerry Seinfeld, RosieO’Donnell, Eddie Murphy, Kevin James, Ray Romano. Buttruth be told, all of those comedians had the benefit ofbeing involved with the world of stand-up comedy at itspeak. The industry was different back in the ‘80s when theseyoung comedians were making names for themselves.People didn’t have access to all the entertainment optionsthey do today. There was no cable channel dedicated tocomedy, there was no “on demand” feature to watchcomedians. Al Gore hadn’t invented the internet yet. If youwanted to see stand-up comedy you had to go to where thecomedians were performing. And Long Island had noshortage of comedy venues back in the day: The WhiteHouse Inn in Massapequa, East Side Comedy inHuntington, Chuckles of Mineola, Konkoma Komedy inRonkonkoma, in case the name was unclear. There waseven a comedy club located in the Southampton Inn in theHamptons that operated year-round. All of these venuesthrived during the ‘80s. All are now gone.

Tell us about the concept of the Long Island ComedyFestival and how it came about.

The idea of bringing a Comedy Festival to Long Islandcame about more out of necessity than anything else.Comedy Festivals have been presented across the countryfor years. All the major cities have one: New York City, LosAngeles, Boston. The question was, “Why not Long Island?”And so back in 2005 work began on the launch of the 1stAnnual Long Island Comedy Festival the followingsummer. The concept was very simple and remains themission of the Comedy Festival - to promote the art of livestand-up comedy.

You always seem to stress the words live stand-up comedy.

Can you explain why?

Seeing live stand-up comedy is atotally different experience from

watching a comedian on YouTube, cableor a DVD. There’s nothing like it. The art of

stand-up comedy, and it really is a “performance” art, wasmeant to be experienced live, with a live audience. Our goalis to present the best comic talent at Long Island’s bestvenues. So this summer we’ll be at venues like TheatreThree in Port Jeff, The Gateway Playhouse in Bellport,Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead. Our comedyshowcases are like one big party. There’s really nothing likethem anywhere.

Where do the comedians come from?

We’re now working with over 100 comedians, with themajority of them from the New York area. If you’re seriousabout pursuing stand-up, most likely you live in either NYCor Los Angeles. Madison, Wisconsin is really not an option.Comedians live where the work is. So having access to somuch incredible comic talent has made the ComedyFestival a big success. Each summer we showcase about 50comedians in the Comedy Festival. Each show features line-ups of about 5 to 7 comedians. And we work with all levelsof talent from national headliners to up and coming“emerging” talent.

What other projects are you working on?

In addition to the annual Comedy Festival, which is oursummer line-up of shows, we now offer comedy showcasesyear-round across Long Island. We produce all the shows atThe Comedy Club @ Theatre Three in Port Jeff, a bi-monthlyshow out at Martha Clara Vineyards in Long Island’s winecountry, as well as numerous fundraisers. Two years ago welaunched the LI College Comedy Tour which has been verysuccessful. Those shows feature line-ups of younger, emerging comics that appeal to the college demo. And ourannual New Year’s Laughin’ Eve show has sold out two yearsin a row. So we continue to grow and Long Island has beenvery supportive.

Any parting words? What?! The interview is over already? I always like to

remind people that laughter is good for them. There areproven health benefits to laughter. So come on out to one ofour comedy showcases and enjoy an evening of laughterand fun… you’ll feel better. Mind you, your problems willall still be there tomorrow… but for about 90 minutes youcan relax and forget them for a while.

Paul Anthony is the official host and producer of the annual Long IslandComedy Festival. He resides in Massapequa with his wife Kathy where theyenjoy reading Generations Magazine whenever it is published. Why Buy Long Term Care Insurance?

To protect your independence, retirement incomeand your family’s well being.

What is Long Term Care?

LTC refers to assistance that a loved one with an illness orcondition needs to get through the day. The need for care iscaused by a physical or cognitive impairment. LTC is provided tohelp you get the help necessary to perform the Activities of DailyLiving. ADLs include: bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting and maintaining continence.

Why it is important to consider long term care insurance?

• You need to protect your family.

The financial consequences of care are devastating.

• Nothing else pays for long term care.

Medicare and health insurance is for skilled care. LTC isunskilled custodial care. Medicaid is welfare. Transferring assetsinvolves look back periods and penalties. Medicaid does notcover most assisted living facilities or desired levels of homecare.

• The cost of care TODAY is $100,000 per year. In thirty yearsthe cost will be $400,000 per year, and $1.2 million for threeyears of care. (The average time care is needed is three years.)

• LTC Insurance allows for care at home, in the community, assisted living or nursing home.

• LTC Insurance Premiums are determined by age and health.

• Waiting to buy LTC Insurance will result in higher premiumsand risk insurability.

• LTC Insurance is less expensive for younger buyers than olderbuyers. Waiting will always cost more both annually andcumulatively. The average policyholder recovers totalpremiums paid in just 3-6 months of care, even after payingpremiums for 20 years!

• State and Federal Incentives make purchasing LTC Insuranceaffordable. NYS offers an annual 20% tax CREDIT on all LTCpremiums. Businesses have tax deductions.

• It is likely you will need long term care. Once age 70, there is a70 % chance that you will need care in your lifetime.

•Take action. Eliminate the false sense of security that you havedealt with long term care planning.

Say I love you in 5 new ways and you will grow therelationship you want faster and easier than you ever

dreamed possible. Put more love and romance in yourlife with these wonderful tips from author Laurie PuhnJ.D., Harvard-trained lawyer, couples mediator andbestselling author of Fight Less, Love More.

30-Second Love Tips Use “Follow Up” Bonds

When your mate tells you about something that’sgoing to happen that day, whether it’s a meeting, adoctor’s appointment, or taking your son or daughter toa soccer game, always make it a top priority to ask yourmate, "How did it go?" By following up you are saying, you matter to me and I love you.

 Bestow “Focused” Talk

If you and your mate are away from each otherduring the day and you are busy but have access to e-mail or text messaging, take 30 seconds to send aromantic note saying, "Just thinking about you," "How’syour day going?" or "Looking forward to seeing youtonight."

 Offer “Pitch-in” Connectors

Volunteering to help your mate with tasks (like thosein the kitchen or child care) even when you are busy, tired or overwhelmed yourself is another powerful wayto say, "I love you. You are special to me and I care aboutyou."

 Display “Face-to-Face” Expressions

As love becomes a permanent fixture in our lives, weoften take it for granted. Don’t ignore your mate.Routinely say hello and goodbye to each other andengage in one sentence face-to-face expressions of lovesuch as “I love our life together,” “You’re a greatmother/father,” or “Your were so kind to do that for me.”

 Exhibit ”Touch and Go” Contact

When you and your mate arrive home, how muchtime passes before you touch each other or offer a quickhug or kiss? When you and your mate are together, whether you are watching TV, emptying the dishwasheror reading, take 30 seconds to reach out to each other. This quick touch says, "I see you. I hear you. I love you."

Spring is the time for new beginnings - a time tomake your love blossom.

As a young girl, Liz Glasgow loved art and crafts, muchto the delight of her mother Hilda. “We had a workroomwith a metal closet that housed all the drawings, papers, art supplies and cameras,” says Liz. “Whenever I neededsomething art related, Mom would tell me it was in thewhite cabinet.”

Now, 50 years later, the white cabinet from herchildhood has again become a central part of her life.Today, the white cabinet resides in Liz’s EastEnd home and houses 80 drawings spanningHilda’s career. “I’ve had her drawings hiddenaway and am now offering them to the world,”says Liz. Just last year, she launched a virtualWhite Cabinet where customers can ordercustom printed Gicleé reproductions thatmimic the look and feel of the original pen andink drawings. “These drawings have lived inthat cabinet for 60 years or so,” says Liz. “Ifound it only fitting for them to reside therevirtually online as well.” A line of customwallpaper is also being launched this spring byFlavor Paper.

Choice Centered Medicaid is a grassroots movementcreated by Joseph Stango, an advocate for Medicaid

reform. CCM strives to make Americans aware of theplight of millions of middle class seniors and disabledadults who are being forced into nursing homes in orderto receive long-term health care.

From Inspiration to Implementation: The Dora &Joe Stango Story

In 1999, Joe Stango built a home in Connecticut toaccommodate his wife, two children, his mother Dora, and his wife’s mother, Alba. The plan was for Stango’sfamily to enjoy the time their mothers had left, all livingtogether as a family in the Southbury house… thewomen growing old surrounded by family.

Instead, Stango’s mother Dora spent the last fouryears of her life in a nursing home, and was only broughthome after a long battle with Medicaid. She died sixdays later.

Stango decided to go to the legislature to try tochange Medicaid law. In 2006, to bring his motherhome, he advocated for the Connecticut legislature topass a Medicaid portability program called MoneyFollows the Person (MFP). At the time, the programwould allow people currently residing in nursing homesfor at least six months the opportunity to return homeand be cared for in the community, while continuing toreceive Medicaid services. MFP was passed with onehundred percent support among both democratic andrepublican lawmakers.

Joseph Stango continues his advocacy nationwidetowards equal treatment of institutional and home care,so that Medicaid-eligible consumers are given thechoice between the two.

“The MFP formula will transform and reformMedicaid, ending forced institutionalization, andenabling all patients and their families, regardless of ageor extent of disability, to have a choice about where theylive out their lives,” says Stango.

For those interested in becoming involved in making choice-centered Medicaid a reality, go towww.dorashope.org or www.choicecenteredmedicaid.org.

Dora’s HopeChoice Centered Medicaid

Did you know that millions of seniors and disabled citizens are being forced into nursing homeinstitutions to receive care? And, did you know that many are middle class seniors or young disabledadults who depleted their savings on medical care and because they have to rely on Medicaid are stuckin nursing homes begging to come home?

Every 18 seconds, someone 65 or older ends up in ahospital emergency room due to a fall, according to

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Falls, about 50 percent of which occur in the home, remainone of the leading causes of fatal and nonfatal injuryamong older Americans. Quite often they can lead toproblems with daily activities like dressing, bathing andwalking – or can require nursing home placement. However, the good news is that with some planning andcare, they are preventable.

The following are tips for making a home saferso as to help prevent falls:

Remove loose “throw” rugs and lengthy extensioncords from the floor

Install grab bars next to the toilet and in the showeror bathtub

Use non-slip mats in the bathtub or on showerfloors

Improve the lighting in your home

Avoid going barefoot or wearing slippers

Keep items used often in cabinets that are easilyaccessible

Keep stairs and floors free of loose papers, books, shoes and clothing that could be a tripping hazard

Along with making these physical changes toyour home, it’s also important to take thefollowing steps related to your physical health:

Have your health care provider review yourmedications, since certain combinations can

contribute to falls by reducing mental alertness, worsening balance and gait or causing a drop inblood pressure.

Have your vision checked annually as age-relateddiseases (such as cataracts or glaucoma) canincrease your chances of falling, and be sure to wearglasses with an updated prescription.

Begin an exercise program. Failure to exerciseregularly results in poor muscle tone, decreasedstrength and loss of bone mass and flexibility. Ifyour health permits, take up swimming, walking orTai Chi, which improve balance and coordination. However, be sure to check with your doctor beforebeginning any exercise program.

Maintain a healthy diet with calcium-rich foods(such as milk, cheese, yogurt, salmon, sardines, turnip greens, kale) unless you have been told tolimit your calcium intake due to other healthreasons. As you age, your body does not alwaysabsorb enough calcium, which is required toproduce bone and bone tissue. This can result infragile, brittle bones that are prone to fractures.

Increase in Injuries fromMedical Products

There has been much talk in the media aboutinjuries from certain medical products. The two

that have recently been problematic are theprescription drug Fosamax and certain DePuy hipreplacements. Individuals must be aware of the impactthat these medical products can have, both good andbad, in order to make informed decisions. At our firm,we have heard many victims tell their painful stories oftheir experiences with these products. We aim to keepour clients and the communities we serve aware of thisinformation to protect their own health and well-being.

Fosamax is used to treat and prevent osteoporosisin post-menopausal women and steroid-inducedosteoporosis in men. It has been determined that thepatients who took the drug face significant risk of aspontaneous femur, hip and thigh fracture injury. LongIsland Attorney Rudolph Migliore states, “Fosamaxintended to relieve the suffering of osteoporosis andarthritis but instead has had devastating andsometimes crippling results on people.” In FDA andindependent studies, it was discovered that somepatients using Fosamax had severe pain in joints, muscles and/or bones. Many of these patients havesuffered a broken femur, thigh or hip fracture after aminor fall.

Another issue of concern in many different seniorcitizen communities has been the increase of patientsneeding multiple hip replacements because they wereimplanted with defective hip replacements, manymanufactured by DePuy orthopedics. Some patientsthat were given the defective implant had to undergorevisionary surgery, making it a longer and harsherordeal. The DePuy hip replacement is designed toreplace worn or weakened parts of the body's naturalhip. Studies have shown that one in eight patients willneed a second procedure to correct the originalimplant.

The Migliore law firm located on Long Island hasrepresented clients in a wide range of product liabilitycases in the last three decades. For more information orto set up a free consultation, contact Rudolph Miglioredirectly at 631-543-3663.

An Urgent Appeal from Choice CenteredMedicaid (CCM) Founder Joe Stango

In all states, nursing home care is a Medicaidentitlement, but home care is not in spite of the fact thatit’s less expensive, and it’s what most people want.“Middle class America is unaware that their freedom isthreatened because to receive Medicaid services meansthey can be forced into institutions in order to receivebenefits,” says Stango. “It doesn’t matter whether they’retwenty years old or ninety; Medicaid benefits do not‘follow the person’ and, as a result, do not allowindividuals to choose where they live out their lives.”

As a result, every year thousands of middle classAmericans in need of long-term care face the agony offorced institutionalization. And it’s not only seniors whoare affected; young adults who’ve suffered strokes or caraccidents, or who have had other health challenges canend up in a nursing home for life.

“The decision whether to enter an institution or becared for at home belongs to all Americans and theirfamilies, not the government,” says Stango.

What Is the Purpose of CCM?Our mission is about complete choice for the

individual. CCM is about giving families the freedom tochoose where its members live out their lives; it’s aboutequal treatment of institutional care and home care, allowing consumers to choose where Medicaid servicesare received.

Care Cost MythMyth: Nursing home care is cheaper than home

care. Realty: Home care is less expensive thaninstitutionalized care. A comprehensive studyconducted in Vermont in 2002 showed that home-based care was two-thirds the cost of nursing homecare.

Basic Civil RightsCivil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated

his life to fighting for justice, equality, and freedom forall Americans. CCM is a move toward theimplementation of the basic civil rights all Americansdeserve – a Medicaid system that enables seniors andthe disabled the right to choose between receiving careat home over institutionalized care.

Choice Centered Medicaid ...“it’s the right thing to do”

Tony Orlando -Honorary NationalChairperson

Keeping Families TogetherSupport for CCM is support for the value of home

care, which in turn fosters strong communities byallowing families to maintain life-affirming ties with eachother and with their communities. CCM is about buildingcommunities that make sense because they include, respect, and value all of its members.

When I was in my Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeryresidency program in the late 1980s, dental implants werethe “new thing.” Very few people knew about dentalimplants and it was difficult for patients to findinformation about them. Through the early 1990s dentalimplants were gradually becoming more accepted. It wasstill difficult convincing general dentists to give theirpatients the option of using dental implants to replacemissing teeth. They didn’t want to try something“experimental” on their patients. Now, as we move intothe second decade of the 21st century, the use of dentalimplants is widely accepted. It is hard to find someonewho hasn’t heard of dental implants. Information iswidely available, especially through the internet. Dentalimplants have become an integral part of dentistry. Now,almost every patient who needs to have teeth replacedshould be given the option of having dental implants.

Dental implants have passed the test of time. Once

they are placed in the jaw, they can last a lifetime. Veryrarely does a dental implant need to be replaced. Howmany times have you had crowns or bridges remadebecause the supporting teeth developed problems? Andfull dentures need to be replaced every 5 to 10 yearsbecause they become loose and don’t stay in well. It’s notuncommon for a dentist to say to me, “I saw Mrs. Smith inmy office recently and the implants you placed 10 yearsago are still holding up fine!”

So, if you are missing teeth, whether it’s one tooth, several teeth or all your teeth, you should consider usingdental implants to replace them. They provide a time-tested, long-lasting way of supporting crowns anddentures. For further information call Dr. David Miller at 631-499-7266for your complimentary consultation to find out how you canbenefit from dental implants.

Dental Implantsare Here to StayUsing dental implants to replace missing teeth and tosupport dentures is a very important part of dentistrytoday. But it took some time for it to be this way.

Welcome my single readers. I wish to thank all ofyou who sent in such fabulous questions. I appreciate allof your kind words, and will do my best to eventually getall of your questions published. I am pleased to say theresponse was overwhelming! Thank you single readers!

“Dear MTN,I know you are a Matchmaker and try to get people

together, but my question is a little complicated. I wishto break up with the man I am dating, and need yourhelp. Do you also give advice on how to break up withsomeone?

I have been dating Warren for almost a year now. He’sin his fifties and has never been married. At first he waseverything I was looking for. He is handsome (in myeyes), successful, owns his own business, is familyoriented, and pays for all of our dates. I was extremelyhappy for the first six months. I only began to getsuspicious when I asked to meet his family and for himto meet my family. I think six months of dating is aproper time limit to go by. Once I said this, thingschanged. Now he is distant, I have to make all the calls,he breaks dates, and says he’s not ready to meet myfamily and vice versa. I’ve had it with him, and for thepast five months I’ve tried to break up with himnumerous times, since I know this relationship is goingnowhere. I’m sure he’s hiding something, but have noidea what it is and don’t even care anymore. Help medump him! Thanks, Mary

Dear Mary,You are right that it is my job to keep couples

together, but you have a question and a problem, andthat is what I am here for. If you have been trying to breakup with him numerous times, and he keeps comingback, I would assume that it’s because he cares a greatdeal about you. Maybe instead of trying to “dump him”you could try a more positive angle. Go out with him andhave a heart to heart talk about everything you told me.It could be that he’s so used to being single that hedoesn’t know how to properly treat you and it might onlytake for you to tell him what you need. If he does it, great! If he can’t do it, then just tell him it is truly over and torespect your wishes. Good luck to you!

Alpha Care Supply has been a family owned and operatedcompany for 19 years. Don Walker, owner, founder and Presidentof Alpha Care Supply, explained that "my major impetus was tohave a business for my three sons." It was the impairment of oneson that took Walker into the business of mobility with powerchairs and scooters. "This opened up the market for the accessbusiness," he said. "Powered mobility changed and we found theaccess niche."

Now, Walker and his sons serve the metropolitan area, including the five boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester andRockland counties. Specializing in ramps, stairlifts, verticalplatform wheelchair lifts and other access solutions, Alpha, acontracted vendor for several agencies, has available inventory,in stock, so they can provide quick turn-around as needed. "Ourproducts are available quickly. We can be very responsive in themetropolitan area," said Walker. "Baby boomers really need thisequipment," he continued. "There is a push to keep people intheir own homes, as opposed to an assisted living facility ornursing home."

But more than just accessibility, Walker stressed Alpha'sconcern for customers' safety and quality of life. "Safety is our

number one priority. Ifthere is a fire, theyneed to be able to getout. We provide safe, useable ramps."

Walker said thattheir products can beinstalled in a stationaryposition for either long orshort term use. Alpha also rents theiraccess equipment for temporary needs. The access products arenot only for private homes. Licensed and insured, Alpha hasoutfitted churches, hospitals, synagogues, schools, etc. and hasworked for federal, state and local facilities.

Anne Green, MD, June Lee, M.D., and Diana Yoon-Schwartz,MD, PhD, are a dynamic trio providing advanced breast care atSt. Catherine of Siena Medical Center’s new Women’s Health andOutpatient Diagnostic Pavilion.

Women have special needs when it comes to health care, andfrom the time of diagnosis through treatment, patients can beoverwhelmed. St. Catherine is dedicated to offering advanced

comprehensive and compassionate healthcare services in a private setting.

From the moment women driveto the hospital’s convenientSmithtown setting and park in its free, dedicated lot, they experience theultimate in customer service as theyenter the beautifully-appointed centerthrough a private entrance.

With advanced imaging andbiopsy techniques, Anne Green, MD,Director of Breast Imaging,

supervises the first part of breast care:diagnosis. In fact, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center was recentlythe first hospital on Long Island to earn the American College ofRadiology’s gold standard of quality certification in MRI of thebreast. Dr. Green commented, “Diagnostic excellence is key, becauseearly detection of breast cancer leads to early treatmentand improved survival.”

Through Dr. June Lee, and Dr. DianaYoon-Schwartz, the pavilion also offersadvanced surgical techniques, including theadvanced DIEP breast reconstruction procedure. When mastectomy is part of a patient’s treatmentplan, women may consider immediate breastreconstruction. Because losing a breast is anemotionally and physically traumatic experience,St. Catherine’s plastic-micro surgeons are performingmicrosurgical techniques that rebuild a lost breast at the time of amastectomy. Although there are many breast reconstruction

procedures available, the pavilion offers the new DIEP surgical flapbreast reconstruction procedure.

DIEP stands for deep inferior epigastric perforator, which is thename of the main blood vessel that runs through the tissue, used toreconstruct the breast. In DIEP flap reconstruction, only skin, fatand blood vessels are removed from the lower belly (the abdomenbetween the waist and hips). No muscle is removed, which decreasespost-surgical pain and expedites recovery.

The first stage is performed by oncoplastic breast surgeon Dr.June Lee, who performs a skin-sparing mastectomy: a breast-conserving, soft-tissue surgery. This advanced technique is used totreat breast cancer with less scarring than a traditional mastectomyand involves removing cancerous tissue through a small incision.

The second stage of the surgery is completed by plastic andreconstructive surgeon Dr. Diana Yoon-Schwartz. With more than10 years experience with this complex surgical technique, sheprovides unparalleled expertise. Similar to other breast reconstructionprocedures, the DIEP flap uses tissues harvested from the patient’sabdomen. The abdominal skin, fat and deep inferior epigastric vesselsthat supply necessary blood are removed and replanted to achievethe look of a natural breast. The abdominal wall tissue ischaracteristically similar to breast tissue, enhancing the aestheticoutcome.

“When a patient hears the diagnosis of breast cancer, it can bedevastating, but our job is to counsel them and let each

patient know that they have options, that theyhave hope, like the DIEP procedure,” saidDr.Yoon- Schwartz. “The DIEP procedure offersbreast cancer patients an immediate option forreconstruction, which can greatly improve theirquality of life later.”

St. Catherine’s surgeons are committed totailored care for each patient. “Other hospitalstreat patients as if they are a revolving door,

while we are dedicated to “boutique-style” treatment,”commented Dr. Lee. “We are with them through every step of theprocess.”
