Dallas Blooms ushers in spring at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, and this year’s theme gives a nod to our Texas roots — Deep in the Hearts of Texans. As in years past,

the horticulture team has planted more than 500,000 spring-blooming bulbs, making the Dallas tulip display the largest outside of Holland. This year, the amazing Dallas Blooms topiaries include Texas themes: two horses, two longhorns and the iconic Texas Star.

Reopening the same weekend as Dallas Blooms are two gardens that have been temporarily closed. With our annual winterization and maintenance of the Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden complete, it’s time to revisit the garden that got Dallas named to the list “The 2014 Traveler 50: World’s Smartest Cities” by National Geographic Traveler. Whether you are young or young at heart, you’re never too old to enjoy the fun of our more than 150 interactive science exhibits in the 8-acre Children's Adventure Garden.

The other reopening during Dallas Blooms is the Lay Family Garden. Developed in 1989 and one of the first large gardens on our campus, the Lay Ornamental Garden was given as a gift from Mimi Lay Hodges in honor of her late husband, Herman Lay. Renamed and reinterpreted, the Lay Family Garden preserves original iconic elements such as the waterwalls fountain and features a larger pond, a new grotto and waterfall, and beautiful new horticultural accents. This renovation is made possible by the Lay's two daughters, Dorothy Lay, Susan Atwell and her husband Anthony, and a gift from the estate of Ward Lay.

We invite you to visit us and to visit often. Be sure to check out the new Adult Programs, as well as the lively bands performing during our Cool Thursdays Concerts.

If you are already a member or have contributed to the Arboretum, please accept our sincerest gratitude. Admission and parking revenue covers less than half of our budget. Without the support of our members and donors, we couldn't be one of the nation's premier display gardens. It is our hope that you see how the displays on our grounds offer much to those who share in their beauty and that you enjoy the wonder of the changing seasons. We look forward to seeing you in the garden!

MARCH• Plant cool-season annuals for quick color in the garden.• Some warm season veggies, such as tomatoes, can be

planted late in March, but be prepared to cover them if we have a freeze or frost.

• You may still have some time to dig and divide fall-blooming perennials if they haven’t started putting out new growth yet.

• It’s a great time to plant new trees and shrubs in the garden so they establish a good root system before summer. Make sure to fertilize them so they get a good start.

• Begin thinking about sodding or seeding your lawn late in March, once the last frost date has passed. Mow your lawn shorter than normal to help remove early weeds before seeding. Grass is a low-maintenance groundcover that helps retain soil moisture and helps reduce soil erosion. Don’t forget to start fertilizing your lawn as well.

• Prune and shape any spring-flowering shrubs and vines as soon as they finish blooming.

• Once trees and shrubs begin to green up, trim any dead or damaged areas that become obvious.

• Continue fertilizing winter and spring annuals.

APRIL• Begin planting summer annuals, such as lantana and pentas

(sun) and impatiens and coleus (shade), as they become available at local nurseries. Some summer tropicals may also be found in nurseries toward the end of April.

• Now is great time to plant new perennials in your garden. Make sure to select plants that are right for your zone. Consult nursery professionals if you are uncertain.

• Continue planting new trees, shrubs and roses. Don’t forget to fertilize new plantings.

• Plant all summer veggies and herbs.• Continue sodding and seeding lawns. As the temperatures

warm, make sure sod stays moist until it begins to root out. • Continue any tree and shrub pruning to reshape old and new growth.• Continue pruning and reshaping any spring-blooming

shrubs and vines after they finish flowering.• Continue fertilizing lawns and prepare to start mowing if

you haven’t already.

MAY• Plant your heat-tolerant summer annuals and tropicals, if

you haven’t already. Our favorites for the heat are lantana, ornamental sweet potato vine, purple fountain grass, ornamental peppers, coleus, elephant ears, caladiums, pentas and tropical hibiscus.

• Continue planting perennials, trees and shrubs. Just be sure to water them well as the temperature rises and continue watering them regularly, making sure to saturate the root ball on trees and shrubs as much as twice per week throughout the summer.

• The last of the heat-tolerant veggies and annual herbs can be planted until mid-month, including Southern peas, sweet potatoes, basil and oregano.

• Fertilize your lawn and garden with a high-nitrogen fertilizer, following recommended application rates.

• Be sure to water grass regularly during the hot summer months, up to one-inch depth, 2 to 3 times weekly, or what your city water restrictions will allow.

• Mow your lawn once per week to maintain good, healthy growth and reduce any unnecessary wear and tear on

lawn equipment.• Continue pruning and reshaping any spring blooming

shrubs and vines after they finish flowering.

Dallas Blooms, the largest floral festival in the Southwest, has been a tradition “Deep in the Hearts of Texans” for 31 years. Presented

by Bank of America, the display begins February 28 and continues through April 12. This year’s Texas-sized extravaganza will feature more than 500,000 spring-blooming bulbs along with Texas-themed topiaries, entertainment, food and other activities celebrating the iconography of our state that is recognizable worldwide.

Texas is known as the state that does it big, and the Dallas Arboretum is no different. Our horticultural department’s enterprising work is made evident throughout the 66-acre property – from the ground-breaking research conducted in our Trial Gardens to the 3,000 azaleas blooming in April. And it’s not just the “sage in bloom that’s like perfume.” Our incredible color gardens feature tulips, daffodils, Dutch iris, hyacinths and more than 100,000 pansies and violas that will paint the grounds throughout spring.

What better backdrop to showcase the larger-than-life élan and diverse heritage of our great state? You’ll see the great symbols of Texas – longhorns and horses planted with ornamental grasses and the Texas Star fashioned from petunias. You will hear the nostalgic melodies from when the West was wild and taste cuisine that draws Yankees south of the Red River. To paraphrase John Steinbeck: “Texas is the obsession and the passionate possession of all Texans.” We can’t wait to showcase our Lone Star obsession at Dallas Blooms this spring.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS It has been more than 12 years since the first flowering cherry tree was planted at the Dallas Arboretum as part of a long-term project to increase the number. This year, visitors in mid-March will be treated to the ephemeral blooms of more than 150 trees during the peak of Dallas Blooms. For 10 short days, clouds of pink will hover tantalizingly over beds of spring-flowering bulbs, verdant green lawns and meandering paths. We invite you to join us for an unforgettable afternoon in the garden. Please check the website for updates on the cherry blossoms and the best days to visit.

“We are so grateful to the entire Vicki White Homes Team for their tireless efforts to sell our home and help us find a wonderful new one for our family. Vicki’s unparalleled service and experience brought us a buyer in just a few days. The team went the extra mile to show us homes and help us successfully negotiate a contract. They have become much more than our Realtors – they have become our friends. If you need to buy or sell a home, there is just no other choice than the Vicki White Homes Team in our opinion.” – The Ivey’s
