The GORE-TEX® membrane is:

The secret of GORE-TEX® fabrics lies within its revolutionary bi-component membrane.

The expanded PTFE portion of the membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times bigger than a molecule of moisture vapour. So whilst water droplets cannot penetrate the GORE-TEX® membrane, moisture vapour can easily escape.

Integrated into the ePTFE structure is an oleophobic, or oil hating substance that allows moisture vapour to pass through, but creates a physical barrier to contaminating substances such as oils, cosmetics, insect repellents and food substances.

WINDSTOPPER®

Using the same technology that created the revolutionary GORE-TEX® membrane, W.L. Gore developed an ultra-lightweight WINDSTOPPER® ePTFE membrane designed specifically to be used in conjunction with fleece. Proven to be twice as warm as standard fleece in cold wind, WINDSTOPPER® fleece stops the wind completely yet still allows body vapour to escape. Most other windproof fleeces are only marginally breathable. WINDSTOPPER® fleece maintains its original windproofness after extended use and washing.

COOLMAX®

Coolmax® fabric is the performance fabric that includes an effective fiber-based moisture management system. The system can move perspiration away from the body, and through the fabric, where it can evaporate quickly, allowing the wearer to feel cooler and more comfortable.

Coolmax® fabrics are made from specially engineered polyester fibres from ADVANSA with an increased surface area. This special four-channel or six-channel fibre forms a transport system that pulls moisture away from the skin to the outer layer of the fabric. It then dries that moisture faster than other fabrics to thermoregulate the body by evaporative cooling.

BAMBOO

Bamboo grows organically and thrives naturally without using any pesticides or fertilizers and is sustainable and biodegradable. Bamboo fibre has a round surface so is very smooth and sits perfectly next to the skin. It wicks away moisture from the body which then evaporates, keeping you naturally drier and more comfortable. The cross-section of the bamboo fibre is filled with various micro-gaps and micro-holes giving it much better moisture absorption and ventilation keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Bamboo has a unique anti-bacterial bio-agent which resists the spread of bacteria on the skin without any adverse affects, such as abrasion or irritation.

Trekmates® Merino wool is ultrafine 18 micron size. Merino is much finer than traditional wool; each fibre is a fraction of the diameter so is extremely comfortable to wear against your skin with no itching and feels just like silk. Unlike synthetics Merino wool is also able to absorb and release up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet or damp, therefore keeping your skin dry and comfortable in the heat but also providing natural insulation from the cold.
