    Volleyball Player of the Year

    Dawson

    FunkPenn Manor

Dawson Funk is so good at all facets of volleyball thathis coach, Chris Telesco, was puzzled at which positionhe should play. Telesco could have played him at outsidehitter, where he could swing away for kills. Or maybemiddle hitter, where he could block (and swing). Then therewas setter, where he could use his skills to put balls in theright spots for his teammates spikes. Telesco chose setterbecause Funk could, and did, set, block and get in a few

swings. Funks well-roundedness stretched to the back rowin coming up with digs and his jump serve was one of thebest in the L-L League.

If some of Penn Manors current volleyball playersbecome coaches someday, well know why. It would betraced to Chris Telesco, who is not only coaching his playersto become better players but coaching to make thoseplayers leaders. He has handed his players responsibilityand has taught the players to be role models for the teamsyounger players. On top of that, he coached the Comets tothe L-L League title, which came in Penn Manors fourthmatch of the season against rival Hempeld.CHRIS TELESCO

Really, Thomas Haines said, youcouldnt beat the view. It is one only

11 other wrestlers in the historyof the Commonwealth had everenjoyed, and when he thinks back

now on what it was like on the vic-tors stand that March day in Her-shey, he has to admit hes still a

little bit in awe.Everyone in the Giant Center, it seemed,

was standing. And everyone was applaudingSolancos senior heavyweight.

    Just amazing, he said recently.

Winning a single state champion-ship is a triumph of DNA and dog-gedness, of time and teamwork,of mindset and musculature.

But to achieve theheights Haines achieved

that day tobecome one of that

    decorated dozen ofPennsylvania wres-

tlers who have won fourstraight PIAA titles that

takes all of the above, forthe entirety of a high school

career.Think of all the times Haines

might have slipped off track.Think how often he might have beendone in by injury, complacency orthe vagaries of youth.

Instead he became one SingletedSensation, winning not only thosefour titles but setting Lancaster-Lebanon League career records forvictories (174, against ve defeats)and pins (119). He went 42-0 as asenior, and lost exactly one match hislast three years.

His was, without question, the n-est L-L wrestling career ever. Whichis why hes continuing his career atOhio State. And why he is a morethan deserving Lancaster Newspa-pers Male Athlete of the Year.

Its denitely something thatsvery hard to do, he said of hisquad-peat. I controlled everythingI could. Everything else just fell into

place, I guess. I denitely had a littlebit of luck. While that never hurts, those

around him point out that luck is de-nitely a residue of design in his case.

It seems like Thomas got morehungry as each year went, saidRon Miller, who coached Haines insoccer the last two years, but was aninterested observer of his grapplingexploits as well. Its incredible tomaintain that focus for four years.

Miller, who used Haines rst atgoalie and later as a midelder andstriker, is convinced he could haveexcelled at soccer, were that his

sole concentration. He had the speed, sizstrength, as well as a nose for the ball.

But wrestling was always his primarysport, from a very young age. And he newavered in his pursuit of excellence. As

Bentley put it, He was always wantingBentley owns and operates RenegadeForce, a Shippensburg-based wrestling cOnce a wrestler at Northern High Schoolalso a former Army Ranger, he describeplace as being nothing special just a gwith a single wrestling mat. It has nonethproven attractive to a number of top-notwrestlers, including Haines, a regular sifth grade.

Bentley quickly came to appreciate ething Haines brought to the table. His phattributes, sure, but the rest of it as well.burning desire to excel. His self-awareneHis willingness to accept feedback. Somelse, too.

Hes got a great support network witfamily, training partners and everyone wpart of his life, Bentley said. That addsnatural gifts.

It was Haines dad, David, who had rgotten Thomas involved in organized wrtling, when he was in rst grade. The eldHaines once wrestled at Penn Manor, anknew well the challenges and benets ofsport.

When he started out, Thomas Haineshimself liking the coaches, as well as theother kids. I made a lot of friends, he swanted to keep going back. I wasnt thatat it, but I kept going back, so eventuallygood.

By fourth grade he was hanging witholder kids on the mat. By fth grade hebeating them. And thats pretty much hohas been ever since.

In high school, Haines came under thelage of John Little, Solancos longtime co

Expectations were modest at rst. Hagoal as a freshman was simply to makedistricts. But he started winning once thepostseason began, and never stopped.

But this (winningathlete of the year)might be even bigger,

she added. I really dont know what to say.Im just. ... Im just ecstatic.

While winning the athletic honor cameas somewhat of a surprise to Helgeson, hercoaches and even opposing coaches

could see it coming. She very purpose-driven and sets highexpectations for herself and those aroundher, Rogers said in an email.

Tenacious would be an excellent word.Or driven, Wolf said. She has an inner rein her that you cant coach and you cantteach.

Quiet. Determined. Goal-oriented. Self-assured, Bill Bowers, now an assistant andformerly the head track at Hempeld, wroteabout Helgeson in an email.

Helgeson nished her career unbeatendual meets in the 400-meter race. She twiceearned silver medals at states and set theall-time L-L League record of 55.13 secondsduring a runner-up nish at states in thatevent as a sophomore.

Helgeson also clocked the fastest 200-me-ter time in L-L history when she won theDistrict Three Class AAA crown in 24.60 in2012.

Having missed most of the postseasonwith a hamstring injury as a junior, Helgesonblazed back to the top of the pack in her nalyear. She won league titles in both the 200and 400 and was second in the 100. She wenton to win district titles in the 200 and 400,then capped her career by taking second inthe 400 in 55.60 and sixth in the 200 in 24.98at the PIAA Class AAA Championships.

Her athletic future, though, will be on theeld hockey pitch in Palo Alto, California asa member of the Cardinal. Helgeson takeswith her 35 goals and 24 assists in her career, along with a Class AAA state title during hersophomore season.

    Donegal coach Jessica Shellenberger re-

membered a postseason practice the Indianshad with Hempeld.Sarah received a pass from the backeld

and, with two touches, had received, beat twodefenders and was swiftly heading towardsthe circle, Shellenberger said.

That moment sealed it for me that shewas an impressive eld hockey player. The amount of control, clean footwork andcoordination it took receive, eliminate andcontinue to move forward in a tight spaceunder pressure is a very high skill.

Or as longtime Warwick coach Bob Derrnoted in an email: Not only is she verygifted physically with speed, quickness

and quickness in acceleration, she hasgreat vision and poise on the eld. Shenot only presents a huge threat on theeld with her speed, but her knowledgeand poise allows her to be more of athreat because she inspires others toraise their level of play too.

Bojanic-Collier said she thinks Hel-gesons brighter days on the eld arestill ahead.

She doesnt have super-renedskills, yet, but also has only trainedthree months out of the year for the lastsix years, Bojanic-Collier said of Hel-

geson, who earned four varsity lettersin track, two in basketball and three ineld hockey at Hempeld.

Training year-round, her skill levelwill take off.

Helgeson said shes not sure whatposition shell play at Stanford, whichwent 16-5 and won its fth NorPacWest title in a row last fall. She playedforward and mideld for the BlackKnights.

I just want to go out and contrib-ute, Helgeson said. Im hopeful I canplay right away. Id like to. Who wantsto sit on the bench? Id rather be on theeld.

I want to help them win.Sounds familiar.

It was a couple of weeks in a rowof, Wow, how is this happening? Thomas Haines said.

The wows kept coming, everyMarch. Little continued to dispenseadvice, and marveled at how readilyhis pupil soaked everything in: Tell himsomething once, the older man said, and right away he would look to imple-ment it, even in mid-match. It was likenothing Little had ever seen.

And Haines continued to hone hiscraft at Renegade. Sometimes he wouldtrain against formidable kids who were

at or near his age, like East PennsborosZach Nye (now at Virginia) or Chest-nut Ridges Austin Buttry (bound forWest Point). Sometimes it was againstBentley. Or maybe Chris Barrick, once an All-American at ShippensburgUniversity.

Ive gotten my butt kicked count-less times up there, Haines said.

But never when it mattered most. His state medals are now on a shelfnear the door in his bedroom. Most ofthe time he just breezes past them, butevery now and then he stops and looks.

And, he said, I just have to smile. Its been a heck of a ride, thats forsure.

All the way to the top. Wonderfulview.
