April Highlights
SoCal Spring
HBSC has 2 seasons—ski season and the
other favorite season. It’s April, and we’re
ready to enjoy both. Our 1st April Mammoth
trip was cancelled, but then came the snow,
and many spontaneous decisions to GO FOR
IT, followed by Trip 2 sign-ups!
As for the sunny SoCal highlights:
At the Ahmanson Theater through April 11:
Harmony—a new musical with music by Barry
Manilow, and HBSC’s Ron Pedley played in
the pit orchestra!
Vera celebrated a milestone birthday with an
abundance of HBSC friends, a lot of line
dancing, and plenty of cake at the Starting
Gate in Los Alamitos.
Marty hosted a Board Meeting - with the
outgoing and incoming officers—on April
27th for transition planning. Club Bylaws will
be sent to all members for review. And so,
as the snow melts, a new HBSC year - and
the other favorite season—begins. Enjoy!

The hunt is on
It’s April and the hunt is on—for April fools,
missing tax documents, Easter eggs … and
snow. There’s no guarantees with stock
prices or spring skiing— but even with a
slight mismatch on Trip Dates and those
ever exhilarating Mammoth dump alerts,
HBSCers headed to the mountains, made
the most of it and found snow. Skiing—yes.
Swimming at Canyon Lodge—optional!
April also means Elections - HBSC Officer
Elections. Voting was held at our April 1st
Club Meeting. Results? See Page 2. Con-
gratulations Incoming Officers. The 2014-
2015 Officers Installation will be on May
6th….and it’s NOT TOO LATE to step into an
open role: Race Committee Chair, Dinner
Coordinator Chair, Sergeant at Arms.
Spring skiing means our other favorite sea-
son is about to heat up. Get ready HBSC!!
It’s going to sizzle! To our newest members,
welcome to an awesome year round club!
The end and the beginning. An incredible year comes to an end. Our Club has grown to
over 100 members. We started with the ―End of Ski Season Party‖ at Zubies Dry Dock in
May. Debie Rogers organized a fantastic trip to Yosemite in June. Gail Weis (personal
trainer) kicked off our July meeting with a presentation on how to get fit for ski season.
Then it was party time. The July, Hawaiian Theme Summer Party got us started with Vicki
and Kevin Pope hosting. Then, in August, Captain of the Pirates, Eddie Clark invited the
entire Ski Club to his den in the Harbor for an encore.
Over the summer, Mo Hastings led us on a number of paddle board and kayak adventures
from Sunset Rentals. Patti Snodgrass organized a trip to Del Mar in August to watch the
horses run – not sure what was more fun, the horses, or the ride/round trip party on Am-
trak. Also in August, a few of us wound up in Mammoth for the annual Bluesa-palooza and
Craft Beer Festival. Summer ended with the September Beach Party that was a blast –
check out the pictures in the Newsletters and on the Website – words are inadequate to
describe our events!
Fall began with our wine tasting event in Temecula, again organized by Patti Snodgrass and
then at our November meeting Daryl from "Ski and Snowboard Outlet" of Costa Mesa gave
us a preview of some of the new ski and snowboard equipment for 2014
December kicked off our ski season with our first trip of the year to Mammoth Mountain
and also included our Club Christmas Party at Mario’s Mexican Restaurant. Ski season
then took control with an average of two Club trips to Mammoth each month through April.
Also, our Club was well represented at the Far West Ski Association Annual Ski Week at
Beaver Creek in late January.
Wow – what a year, but we could not have done it without the help of all the Members that
pitched in to make our events come together, but especially the help of our Executive
Board. Special thanks to Betsy Pedley (Executive Vice President), Patti Snodgrass (Vice
President of Special Events AND Secretary), and Vicki Pope (Treasurer). Also our Club Coun-
cil, Penny Edlund (Newsletter Editor), Dick Thiel & Frank Wagoner (Webmasters), Bill Knight
(Orange Ski Council Representative), Vera Pavelic (Sergeant at Arms), and Andy Snodgrass
(Immediate Past President).
It was an honor to have served the Club for the last year and was also an exciting experi-
ence. Building on our past we are paving the way for an even better future. Our new Offi-
cers will be taking the helm in May, and are sure to guide our Club to new pinnacles. Please
support our new Officers as you have me and may we meet again on some of those pinna-
cles. Best Wishes ~ Marty Golden President (2013-2014)

Tick Time
Love hiking in the spring? Camping? Loathe yard work—but gotta do it? Beware the tick.
Tick season here is year-round, but our spring activities can increase exposure and risk of
tick bites and Lyme disease. Lyme disease is NASTY. PREVENTION is the best cure.
Reduce your Risk of Tick Bites and Lyme Disease
Avoid any contact with long grasses, the brush on edges of paths, leaf-litter under trees.
Don’t sit on tree stumps or fallen logs
Wear light colors, full cover (long pants & sleeves) so you can see any ticks easily
Tuck everything in—shirts into pants, pants into socks
Use DEET on skin. Treat clothing with spray containing permethrin
Do a thorough tick check after your outings/ activities. Check friends, kids & pets too
Continue check for several days after your activity. Check your bedding
Ticks, especially nymph ticks are tiny. Find and remove them before they bite. The bite is
painless, and most people don’t even realize they’ve been bitten.

An important NEED TO KNOW for the FWSA 2015 Whistler Trip: Canadian procedures
are to check and deny entry if you’ve had a DUI in the last 10 years or a felony convic-
tion. According to the official Government Website: If you have been convicted of driv-
ing while impaired by alcohol or drugs, you will probably be found criminally inadmissible
to Canada. But as of March 1, 2012, you may be able to get a temporary resident permit
for one visit without paying the C$200 processing fee. For details, visit www.cic.gc.ca
Thank You HBSC Board 2013—2014
We can’t plan the snowfall but we can plan a great HBSC year—and that’s exactly what our
HBSC 2013—2014 Board did. Under the leadership of Club President Marty Golden, Club
Officers dedicated countless time, energy and effort to make this another great year for
HBSC. And it shows. Our club has grown to record 116 members! A very BIG and Heartfelt
Thank You to all the 2013/14 club officers! Thanks for another great year.

April HBSC Mammoth Trip(s) Alas, the April 3-6 trip was cancelled BUT the snow came any-
way. Needless to say— Some HBSCers heeded the call of mother nature, headed to the moun-
tains and enjoyed ―sick days‖with Rx: spring skiing. The April 17-20 trip had a good turnout
and was heavy on the fun, but a little light on the….snow. And newest member Betty busted
some great moves on the dance floor! (April Photos courtesy of Marie, Betsy, Chris H, Dan)
