Exhibitions 4 5

From 23 September Special Exhibitions Gallery, free

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories of military service in times of war and peace will be told in a new exhibition to open at the Australian War Memorial in September. For Country, for Nation will draw inspiration from cultural traditions and symbols of the warrior’s discipline, knowledge, leadership, and skill.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have contributed to Australian defence forces from the Boer War to the present day. They have also worked in ancillary, industry, and other home-front activities, and their communities have been thrust into the front line of theatres of war. This exhibition will highlight these stories and explore themes of remembrance and tradition through family histories, objects, art, and photographs.

75th anniversary of the opening of the Australian War Memorial

In 2016 11 November marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War in 1918. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and on operational service.

The Remembrance Day National Ceremony includes a formal wreathlaying and will be attended by many high-level dignitaries and diplomats, as well as students from each state and territory, representing the youth of Australia. Australia’s Federation Guard and the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, will be on parade.

Please go to www.trybooking.com/209515 from 27 September to book your tickets.

This date also marks the 75th anniversary of the official opening of the Australian War Memorial. The building was opened on 11 November 1941, combining a memorial, an archive, and a world-class museum to commemorate the sacrifice of all Australians who have died in war or on operational service.

In its 75 years the Memorial has kept this original vision, as best described in Memorial founder Charles Bean’s own words: “Here is their spirit, in the heart of the land they loved; and here we guard the record, which they themselves made.”

DECORATION FROM DESTRUCTION: THE FIRST WORLD WAR TRENCH ART OF SAPPER PEARLMonday 19 September2.30 pmFirst World War Galleries, free

Trench art usually evokes images of a muddy soldier hammering out a souvenir for a loved one at home while artillery shells explode overhead. In reality, most trench art was for many a way of passing the time when not at the front. While many pieces are quite simple, others show considerable skill. Come hear a Memorial curator talk about the impressive trench art of Sapper Stanley Keith Pearl.

During the First World War the British, French, and German armies disguised some of their artillery observation posts as trees. The Germans called them Baumbeobachtern (tree observers). One of these trees, used by the Germans in Oosteverne Wood near Messines in Belgium, was left in place until Australia’s 3rd Battalion “souvenired” it in early 1918.
