Day 4. Mon 14 Sept: Whyalla - Port Lincoln Breakfast & DinnerAfter breakfast we take in a fascinating Steel Works Tour around the 1000-hectare site and hear the story behind more than 100 years of significant Australian iron and steel-making history. The One Steel Whyalla Steelworks is a fully-integrated operation, starting with the mining of raw materials and ending with the distribution of finished steel products. Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of raw steel is produced in the steelworks each year, with about 65% of that product then transferred by rail to One Steel’s Market Mills in billet form for further processing. After our tour we enjoy morning tea at the Whyalla Tourist Centre before taking in the views from Hummock Hill Lookout and the Flinders and Freycinet Lookout. We depart Whyalla and drive further down the coast to the township of Cowell, situated on the almost land-locked Franklin Harbour. The world’s oldest and perhaps largest jade deposit was discovered nearby in the Minbrie Range in 1965. The deposit is believed to have been formed around 1700 million years ago by the shifting of the earth’s surface. The Cowell Jade and Gemstone showroom has a range of the finest locally manufactured and sourced jade jewellery and carvings on display which are available for purchase. We enjoy some free time in Cowell to purchase lunch and visit Franklin Harbour Historical Museum. A comprehensive display tells the history and development of the Franklin Harbour Area. It’s easy to imagine these times of yesteryear with the rooms delicately arranged in the period of the late 1800s. Leaving Cowell we continue down to Port Lincoln, passing the small coastal townships of Port Neill and Tumby Bay before arriving at our destination mid-afternoon. On arrival we check-in to our accommodation with time to relax before dinner in the restaurant.Overnight Port Lincoln: Port Lincoln Hotel

Day 5. Tue 15 Sept: Port Lincoln Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerToday we begin with a local guide on-board as we discover Port Lincoln and the surrounding region, including the Lincoln Cove Marina. Famously known as home to the great mare Makybe Diva, who won three consecutive Melbourne Cup’s in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Port Lincoln is also the seafood and aquaculture capital of Australia, home to the country’s largest commercial fishing fleet and renowned for its Southern blue-fin tuna, King George whiting, Western King prawns and Southern Rock lobster. Situated on Boston Bay, Port Lincoln is one of the largest protected natural harbours in the world and three times the size of Sydney Harbour. Since the first settlers arrived in 1839 aboard the ships Abeona, Dorset and Porter, Port Lincoln has developed into a well-serviced, welcoming seaside city. In fact, had there been more fresh water, Port Lincoln might have become the capital of South Australia. Next, we visit The Fresh Fish Factory for a “Seafood Lovers” guided tour where we learn about the diverse local fishing and aquaculture industries, and get the chance to observe how the fishermen’s catch is received, packed and stored. View the many and varied species of the day. See how they open oysters, peel prawns, clean squid and witness the famous King George whiting being filleted in the blink of an eye. Then it’s our chance to taste the renowned Coffin Bay Oyster and enjoy a tantalising tasting of the in-house smoked fish along with the pickled Mussels, Scallops, Squid, and Coffin Bay octopus. Following these appetisers, we enjoy a delicious fish and chips lunch. This afternoon we spend a relaxing 2 Hour Boston Bay Harbour Cruise. The cruise covers the rich history of Port Lincoln’s fishing industry, points of interest and of course the multi-million dollar Lincoln Cove Marina. After our cruise we travel up to Boston Bay Wines to sample fine Eyre Peninsula wines, surrounded by vineyards with a breathtaking vista of blue seas, cruising yachts and perhaps even a whale. We return to our accommodation to relax before dinner. Overnight Port Lincoln: Port Lincoln Hotel

Day 6. Wed 16 Sept: Port Lincoln Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerThis morning we enjoy a very unique guided tour of the Constantia Gallery and Workshop. Since 1977 Constantia has been creating some of the world’s finest furniture. One of the few artisans accredited to The Guild of Master Craftsmen was established in Port Lincoln because of the exceptional climatic conditions. This provides a rare opportunity to see wood craft of a quality most thought was lost to the modern day world. Each piece lovingly created, reflects the skill and traditions of past masters. Designer makers of the Central Table and Hansard desk to the House of Representatives in Australia’s New Parliament House, Canberra. Again our local guide joins us on-board before we head off to the beautiful Coffin Bay area. At our first stop, Pure Coffin Bay Oysters, we take a close up look at those World Famous Coffin Bay Oysters. We talk first hand to the farmers, see how they grow them and all the equipment needed to produce such delicious crustaceans. Our tour concludes with a taste of those wonderful pure Coffin Bay oysters, freshly shucked, not rinsed-off, retaining their natural, unique taste. After lunch at the Coffin Bay Yacht Club we travel out to the Coffin Bay National Park with our local guide. We witness the stunning scenery and the contrast of rugged limestone cliffs, sand dunes and pure white beaches against the inviting turquoise waters. We see Point Avoid, Almonta Beach, Golden Island and Yangie Bay and hopefully spot dolphins, kangaroos, emus, reptiles in an addition to an array of bird life. Later in the day we return to Port Lincoln and bid our guide farewell before returning to our hotel to rest up after an amazing day. Overnight Port Lincoln: Port Lincoln Hotel

Day 7. Thu 17 Sept: Port Lincoln - Streaky Bay Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerWe leave Port Lincoln today as we travel up towards Streaky Bay via Koppio, Cummins and Elliston. We stop at the Koppio Smithy Museum, which features unique buildings and collections set in the picturesque Koppio Hills. From Koppio we continue up to the farming township of Cummins where we meet up with our local guide and commence a tour of the town and farming area. Cummins has played a vital role as a service hub to the agriculture industry since being settled in 1904. The region contains some of the most productive farming land on the Eyre Peninsula. Many historic buildings remain in Cummins. They stand as testimony to it’s rich history, including the old butter factory, a horse dip and the original government dam. The railway line to Port Lincoln was completed in 1907 and the railway loading triangle is now a lovely park. After our tour we enjoy lunch at the Cummins Hotel before making our way back out to the coast and Flinders Highway. After arriving in Elliston we are joined by a local guide. We take a drive along the scenic coastal loop that takes in superb views of the outlying islands, Bird Rock, Waterloo Bay and the unique sculptures dotted along the cliffs.

Day 7. ContinuedWe explore the Elliston township, jetty, silos and the famous murals scattered throughout the streets. The drive from Elliston to Streaky Bay takes us through Port Kenny and past the remarkable inselberg rock formation known as Murphy’s Haystacks before arriving in Streaky Bay for check in and dinner.Overnight Streaky Bay: Streaky Bay Hotel Motel

Day 8. Fri 18 Sept: Streaky Bay - Port Augusta Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerThis morning we visit the Streaky Bay National Trust Museum, which showcases the treasures from regions past and venture to the historic Pug and Pine Cottage. Departing Streaky Bay we make our way across to Minnipa, home to “The Concrete Crappa” and also Pildappa Rock. Pildappa Rock is an impressive granite outcrop baring a slightly pink tinge to its colouring. It is the highest and longest wave formations on the Eyre Peninsula, challenging its cousin “Wave Rock” in Western Australia. Leaving the rock we travel back out to the Eyre Highway and continue across to Wudinna, home to ‘The Australian Farmer’ giant granite sculpture. We stop for lunch at the Wudinna Hotel Motel before continuing our drive across to Iron Knob. Iron Knob is said to be the birth place of the Steel Industry in Australia and has certainly played a prominent role in the life of South Australia. After nearly 100 years, mining at Iron Knob ended in April 1998, when the last ore was taken from the Iron Monarch open cut pit. Though some stock piles are still evident at Iron Monarch and, if commodity prices are favourable in the future, there still is ore to be extracted from these locations. We take a tour of the Iron Knob Mine which sits directly behind the town. The views are fantastic from the top, with the varying colours of the ore, it provides an excellent photo opportunity. Leaving Iron Knob we continue through to Port Augusta arriving at our accommodation late afternoon for check in and dinner. Overnight Port Augusta: Acacia Ridge Motor Inn

Day 9. Sat 19 Sept: Port Augusta - Arkaroola Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerThis morning we board the famous Pichi Richi Railway’s Afghan Express. See the ancient Flinders Ranges landscape unfold before us on the Afghan Express from Port Augusta Railway Station to the historic outback town of Quorn. Travelling the old Ghan route over red earth and bluebush plains from Port Augusta, we’ll watch the ranges creep ever-closer before entering the Pichi Richi Pass with its rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds and beautiful hilly scenery. The Afghan Express is the name railwaymen gave to the passenger train that ran from Terowie to Oodnadatta, through Quorn in 1923. In time, this was abbreviated to the Ghan. The railway was ultimately extended to Alice Springs by 1929. The Ghan used the Pichi Richi Railway route until 1956 when a new standard-gauge railway from Stirling North to Brachina bypassed the narrow gauge railway through the Pichi Richi Pass. After arriving in Quorn we make our way up through Hawker, Parachilna and Leigh Creek enjoying a stop for lunch along the way. We travel across to Arkaroola, taking us past the Nepabunna Aboriginal Community and the boundary to the Gammon Ranges National Park. Upon arrival in the 61,000-hectare wildlife sanctuary of Arkaroola, we check into our accommodation before dinner.Overnight Arkaroola: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

Our trained guides share their knowledge of Arkaroola’s 1600-million year geological history as they navigate the steep slopes and hair raising ascents of the famous Ridge Top Track. Inspiring images of red granite mountains and golden spinifex covered hillsides give way to a breath-taking view across the Freeling Heights, Lake Frome and the desert beyond. After a wonderful day we meet for dinner in the accommodation restaurant.Overnight Arkaroola: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

Day 12. Tue 22 Sept: Flinders Ranges Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerThis morning we begin exploring the scenic Flinders Ranges with our very own local guide on board. We travel along the Blinman road pausing at the famous Cazneaux Tree, which is a must take snap for all those keen photographers. Renowned photographer, Mr Harold Cazneaux, photographed this tree in 1937. The photograph, titled “The Spirit of Endurance” won international recognition. We also stop at Stokes Hill Lookout, which provides an expansive panoramic view of the surrounding landscape including Wilpena Pounds eastern escarpment. Another feature of the lookout is a cast model of Wilpena Pound. It features the main landmarks and the shape and size of this unique formation. The spectacular Brachina Gorge was once used as a pass through which bullock teams pulled their loads but is now a favourite spot for walkers and campers. The drive down into the valley offers spectacular views south of the Pound Range and the area along the Bunyeroo Creek is a favourite location for kangaroos and emus. We arrive back at Wilpena mid-afternoon and enjoy time to relax or take in a scenic flight at own cost. We continue further south to the historic railway township of Peterborough enjoying an intriguing stop at Meldonfield. This miniature world of yesteryear in Petersburg (Peterborough) has been lovingly created by Eldon & Mary Zimmermann. These scale miniatures reflect the true pioneers of the bush and include much of the horse drawn transport of a previous era. The miniature horse drawn vehicles are individually hand crafted by Eldon & Mary to the style that the wheelwrights and coach builders used in the 1800s. A scale model of the original Petersburg Railway Station circa 1885 was disposed of in 1960. It is now under construction using the original stone and bricks from remains found in the creek bed north west of Peterborough. We enjoy some free time to purchase lunch. We leave Peterborough and travel up to Broken Hill, enjoying a comfort stop before arriving in the Silver City.
