From Medwyn PracticeBusiness ManagerI would like to take thisopportunity to bring all ourpatients up to date with somenew developments at Medwyn.

In October 2007, in response topatient feedback, we undertookan overhaul of our appointmentsystem. The main objective ofour review was to increase thenumber of pre-bookablescheduled appointments, particularly with the Partners, whilst retaining sufficientnumbers of appointments for

urgent and emergencysituations. The change meantthat we could also stop theprocedure where patients wereasked to call us back at11.30a.m. for afternoonappointments now that dayseasy access appointments canbe booked any time from8.00a.m.

We feel that the change has

gone very well indeed andcertainly we have had a lot ofvery positive feedback on thenew arrangements. In December 2007 we launchedan online facility to enable ourpatients to book advanceappointments with the Doctorsvia the Internet. We advertisedthe service at Reception, in ourwaiting rooms and on the self

check-in screens, and in thefirst two months more than 819patients have signed up for thisservice! More information is

available from reception or youcan sign up on our website atmedwynsurgery.nhs.uk We will

be looking at the best way toexpand the type ofappointments available and it islikely that appointments forblood tests with ourphlebotomists will shortly beavailable via this Internetservice.

The self check-in screensintroduced last year continue to

be a great success as morethan 59% of all check-ins arenow recorded via the computerscreen. This has saved patientstime on arrival and relievedpressure on our reception teamand allowed them to spendmore time with patients whohave queries and requests.

    We have had enquiries from

new independent practitionerswishing to use consultingrooms at Medwyn. As a resultthe services being offered fromthe Centre now also includehearing aid dispensing andholistic massage.

The Samaritans decided tomove their clinic time toTuesdays from 4.30 to 7.30 pmin order to make themselvesmore available to working andcommuting patients.

Over recent weeks we haveundertaken our annual, confidential patient survey togather your feedback on ourdoctors, nurses and receptionservices and the generalfacilities at Medwyn. Thesurvey will be sent out to be

fully analysed. We will thenshare the results with theFriends of Medwyn committee,to obtain patient representationand input any furtherimprovements we can make. Abig thank you to all those whotook time out to complete theforms your feedback isinvaluable to us.Deborah Slade

evening at the Medwyn Surgerybetween 4.30pm and 7.30pm.Eamon Fay, the SamaritansOutreach Coordinator, explained: All you have to doto speak with one of ourSamaritan volunteers is phonethe surgery on 01306 883816

and make an appointment oryou could just turn up on aTuesday afternoon. So far mostof our callers have beenreferred by the doctors or theother medical practitioners atMedwyn; but actually you canmake an appointment yourselfif you need help.

Every one of us has emotionalhealth problems at differenttimes of our life, continuedEamon. These days, lifeseems to be so busy and hectic

that often there is no one whois available to listen. We knowfrom our 24/7 help-line thatmany people would like to talkto someone about their troublesright now. Our volunteers willgive you as much time as youneed to explore feelings ofdistress and will listen inabsolute confidence.

This experiment of anintegrated on-site Samaritansservice at the Medwyn surgeryis working very well, addedEamon. It is gaining popularitywith the patients as more andmore find out that it is available. The Doctors and other healthprofessionals may not alwayshave as much time as theywould like to explore their

patients feelings. Well,Samaritans have that time, andare happy to give it freely topeople in need.

Of course the Samaritans donot operate within the clinicalpathway, but there are anumber of circumstanceswhere people have found ithelpful to talk over their issuesin a session with theSamaritans volunteer. At

Samaritans, concludedEamon, we concentrate onfeelings. We do not offer anyadvice, but we do offer twothings that can really help. Firstour volunteers are trained tolisten in an accepting andeffective way to what ourcallers are saying. Secondly wecan and do give as much timeto listening to our callers as

they want us to give. Over 50years of experience, we findthat applying listening skills andgiving time very often allowscallers to come to terms withtheir issue and to work out away forward for themselves.

Deborah Slade, PracticeBusiness Manager of theMedwyn Surgery, commented:

Our new building has beenspecially designed to enable usto expand the range of servicesto our 8000 patients. As well asa traditional family practice, theCentre offers NHS dentistry, anon-site pharmacy, a base forthe Thamesdoc out-of-hoursservice, physiotherapy, podiatryand a base for the communitynursing staff. However, to be fully well, continued Deborah, patientsneed to be healthy in mind aswell as body. I believe that theavailability of a Samaritanslistening service has alreadyproved a welcome addition tothe other services we offer, andI am delighted by thedevelopment.
