Since 1909, Townhill PowerStation has been situated onthe north shore of Town Lochnear Dunfirmline in Fife,Scotland. The power station wasoriginally coal fuelled but wasconvertedto gas inthe 1970's.The 5 hectare site has beendisused since2000.Our works comprised ofasbestos removal, demolitionof various buildings down toground level, and remediationof the site. Arisings were usedas engineered fill on site, afterbeing tested to confirm nodetrimental contamination. The turbine hall was the mainstructure to be demolished.

The Erith Group acted asprincipal contractor withAtkins as CDM Co-ordinator.

From our market-leadingknowledge of the recyclingindustry, Erith were able tooffer Scottish Power Ltd anexcellent value solution thatmaximised the credit availableonthe project.

Anglo Saxon settlements, globaltrade , world naval supremacy,Luftwaffe target.. . Greenwich,South London is soaked in history.

On this site, Erith continued makinghistory. Working closely with ourclient, London & Regional Property(L&RP) and consultants, we wereable to deliver a complete designand bu ild package of worksincluding demolition, asbestosremoval, ground remediation, civilengineering enabling works androad/ river haulage.

The site team was led by SteveMartin. The first thing the team hadto do was a bomb mitigation surveyand removal of asbestos across thesite. Over the centuries the site hasbeen used for many things includingan asphalt plant, scaffolding yardandasan import/ export facility.

By choosing Erith, L&RP had a singlepoint of contact for all up-front siteworks. This allowed the client tofocus on the next stage of the

development and minimise theimpact on the local community. From early on in the development itwas clear that managingany impacton the local community was vitallyimportant. Not only from day to daypotential inconvenience but also forthe success of further plannedphases.

One of the key influences on theviability of this development wasaccess. The area is residential, andaccessed thro ugh one, smallcongested route. Erith were able todevelop a haulage strategy for theworks that met all stringentplanning restrictions. This strategyhinged around the use of the riverThames. The majority of exportedmaterial went straight from site tobarge and then onto landfill. Thesecond time for Erith, this form ofhaulage will become common placealong the river Thames in the future.Again Erith are at the forefront ofchanges within our sector.

Erith HaulageIn each issue we intend to delve alittle deeper into what makes ourbusinesstick.

The Erith Haulage Business has beenthe backbone of our business since1967. Indeed, for many years, wehad a Bedford “O” truck atop ourhead office as a constant reminderofhow it all started.

Tom Darsey, father of our chairmanSteve, founded our business in1967. With his first purchase, a£1000 Dodge Truck. In the early1970’s Steve Head, current boardmember responsible for haulage, joined thebusiness.

Steve remembers the early daysfondly. “In the beginning, TomDarsey and his fellow drivers would

drive the trucks during the day andmaintain them at night. Today wehave maintenance contracts on ourfleet and most of the regularmaintenance has been entrusted tothe local Hino and Scania maindealers that also supply most of ourfleet”

Today Steve and his team of 80 areresponsible for a diverse fleet that

without invoice and payment supportand so the business has invested inexternal systems that put our financialcontrol at theforefront of our sector.

With over 70 drivers on the road everyday, most people in the south eastknow The Erith Group through ourdrivers and fleet. Erith Haulageestablished a reputation for thequality of our fleet and 40 years onthis is still key. With a deliberate policyof maintaining a young fleet, thedrivers see themselves asan extensionof both our business and ourcustomers. In an often cutthroatmarket it is the attention to detail, flexibility and ability to deliver thatsets us apart. This flexibility wasparticularly evident in the “headydays” of the summer in 2008. At onestage we hadmaximisedour fleet andsupplemented external supplie rsmanaging the movement of 225vehicles in a single day. Last year thefleet moved over 1 million m ofmaterial.

grab lorries and Ro-Ro lorries. This60 truck fleet is complemented byarticulated bulkers, an articulatedlow loader and road sweeper. Thebusinessalso has over 30 transit typevans.

The Haulage team work hand-in-hand with the other divisions whocontribute approximately 25% ofhaulage orders. All movements of

waste are recorded by a “Duty ofCare” Controlled Waste TransferNotes as required under theEnvironmental Protection Act 1990.Erith Haulage is a Licenced WasteCarrier,Number GTL/3611511.
