It’s hard to believe but I am starting my 2nd year as the ManagingEditor of the InterMarque Monthly. What was suppose to be anInterim position when Andy Lindberg stepped down as Editor, quickly turned permanent when repeated request to theInterMarque Community from Andy and myself for someone tostep up and assume the newsletter editor position met deafeningsilence. Rather than let Andy's legacy disappear I became theinterim managing editor. The only experience I had with anewsletter was as a photography editor in college. I knew this would be a challenge and almostgave up when Brian Cornell (Citroën Club of Minnesota) came to my rescue as the newsletterlayout and design guru. I hope our efforts have not disappointed the subscribers of thenewsletter.

In this issue you will find full photo coverage of the 2010 Spring Kick-Off and other May/Juneevents held within the InterMarque Community. You will find a thought provoking article byAaron Courteau which should serve as a wakeup call for the InterMarque Community and givea clue as to what has really been happening behind the scenes at the annual InterMarque SpringKickoff.

The community should be aware that there are current events on the InterMarque Calendar, enjoyed over the years by the InterMarque Community, that are now in a fragile state and soonmay be eliminated because of lack of participation in the event and support/respect for theevent organizers. For the past 5 years—as Chair of the Intermarque Council (Vintage ForeignMarque Clubs of the Upper Midwest) I have been a caretaker (if you will) of the InterMarqueand it saddens me when I see events disappear due to lack of support and participation.

As you read Aaron’s article please understand that I appreciate his comments and observations, and completely understand his frustration. More than anyone he has been by my side throughthe good and bad times these past three years. I too have had more than my share of frustratingmoments. Those of you who have known me over the years are very aware that I can speak formyself and for the causes I believe in. Speak I will in the August issue. I will address variousissues that seem to be of great concern to this community of vintage foreign motoringenthusiasts and I will also alert you to some of the potential challenges facing the Spring Kick-Off in 2011.

I really hope after you read Aaron’s article you will consider responding with your thoughts, comments and suggestions to Aaron Courteau ([email protected]) or PhyllisGalberth ([email protected]).

The Mayoral Proclamation, which the 2010 InterMarque Council Spring Kickoff received fromSt. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman on May 22nd, will be placed on the award and certificate wall ofthe Square Peg on Saturday, June 19th (See page 17 for details). The Square Peg was chosen todisplay this honor as the diner has become the defacto HOME of the InterMarque Council.

After the short ceremony—please feel free to address your individual concerns to me in person.

Until next month-

Phyllis

Thanks whole heartedly all those who made the 2010 InterMarque

Spring Kick-Off a HUGE success! All of you financially supportive

clubs… All of you AMAZINGLY talented and generous volunteers…

and those selfless and enthusiastic car owners out there who again

braved the schizophrenic spring weather are the Belles of the Ball!

Despite our fickle Mother Nature, and the resulting truncated show

duration, we had a RECORD TURNOUT of cars displayed! Again—

Thank you SO MUCH!

Despite our best efforts the last two years at COMO PARK have beenhindered by the one element over which none of us has any control… theweather. Many accomplishments and advancements to our show have beenrealized over the past two years and I think they are worth making knownhere…

1. OUR GORGEOUS and PUBLICALLY LOCATED new venue. Whatelse needs to be said? How many of us—regardless of the number of yearsattending—would get turned around and twisted trying to locate the oldPlymouth location? How do you think the general public fared?

2. 2009's RECORD TURNOUT—despite FRIDGED weather—wasbested by THIS YEAR'S NEW RECORD TURNOUT despite a rainshortened day! This turnout included that of Bob Jorkowski of “L'Cars”and his Million Dollar Plus collection including a 1937 Rolls Royce V-12Phantom III 4 door Saloon with coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly forBarbara Hutton, movie actress and Revlon cosmetics heiress. Also afreshly restored E-Type Jaguar 1963 Roadster, and a 1954 Jaguar XK-120Coupe, and last but not least—his 1928 Daimler Type P 1.50 Limousine—one of two in existence. Bob came to our event because of the reputation

it has earned locally and elsewhere. He spent thousands of his own dollars, and navigated a multitude of complications to get his collection to ourevent and for that we are VERY GRATEFUL. He spoke highly about ourefforts all day, was supportive of us through our frustrations with theweather, and had multiple suggestions for how we can further build on ournational exposure at this location. Thanks Bob!

3. Local and national press/announcements were sent out by Jim McFaddenour Event Communication Director. While we heard much positivefeedback our anticipated television and press coverage was definitelyhindered by the weather.

4. We are also proud to say that we finally have a large identifying banner(courtesy of WHEELS OF ITALY) as well as INTERMARQUE windowclings to tout our cause at shows and while we roll down the road.

5. We also now have a WEBSITE as well as a Facebook page—both ofwhich have been a great help as we continue to look for ways to grow ourbase. (Interested in being our webmaster? Check out page 17 for a joblisting.)

6. and last, but certainly not least...we received a Mayoral Proclamationdeclaring May 22nd, 2010 InterMarque Spring Kick-Off Day in the City ofSt. Paul! This Proclamation will soon be housed and displayed at TheSquare Peg Restaurant for all to enjoy!

An open letter to those who care about this event and want to see it continue. You may, or may not, be aware that we have received numerous complaints about this year’s SpringKick-Off. From having no free beverages, to no trophies, to not enough freebies, to the inability topark when and where you wanted. Phyllis will be addressing these concerns in the August issue. In themeantime I wanted to remind all of us that this show is not about the individual. It’s about US (theVintage Foreign Motoring Community) and more specifically about our hobby and introducing it tothe masses in an accessible and welcoming space.

The Spring Kick-Off is a 100% volunteer effort coordinated by Phyllis Galberth, myself, JimMcFadden, Brian Cornell, David Lindeman, Michael Jurayj, and Andy Lindberg. But THE GLUEwhich holds all of this together and THE DRIVING FORCE that gets all of this done—for Kick-Offand many other events in this town—is Phyllis Galberth

A little bit of history about Phyllis (who is the current InterMarque Council Chair, the Co-Event Chairof the 2010 Spring Kick-Off and the Managing Editor of this publication).

1. Phyllis Galberth started volunteering with the InterMarque Spring Kick-Off in 1998with the Triumphs and MG's when the Clubs rotated the event every year.

2. In 2003 the show moved to the Radisson Plymouth and Phyllis helped requestcontributions and started requesting preregistration.

3. From 2004–2006 she did contribution requests and pre-registration while alsoworking the event registration desk and counted ballots.

4. 2007-2008 she continued with contribution requests, pre-registration, and was TeamLeader day of the event. She worked the registration desk and banquet assisted AndyLindberg with what needed doing.

5. 2009-2010 Phyllis assumed the duties of putting on the Show for us all. This includedmoving our location to a more public-friendly venue, building a team around her anddelegating to its members the duties that their individual talents would most bringsuccess and evolution to the event. She raised money, lobbied participants, negotiatedwith municipalities and vendors, baby sat and held hands. You name it - she did it, orfound the people that could.

She did all of this on her own time and often with her own initial out of pocket financial investment...and for what... the disrespect and devaluation from the very community she is trying to promote? Thecomplaints being voiced both openly and underhandedly by some in this “community” of ours areadolescent and selfish

My sincere hope is that this is a case of the negative—vocal minority—drowning out the silent andappreciative majority. If so, then you the majority need to speak up to the InterMarque Counciland/or your club’s (if you are in one) officers about the appreciation you have for this show and theorganizing team.

Regards,Aaron Courteau2009-2010 InterMarque Spring Kick-Off Co-Event Chair. 651-274-6265

The Triumph Trans American charity-drive Stag, known as "uncle jack"

in tribute to the late Jack Drews, has arrived at its new home in St. Paul.

Jack Drews always signed his Internet posts "uncle jack", so the convention inthe Triumph community has become to refer to the car in print using lower-case. Jack died when his Triumph crashed in a vintage race during the time theStag was being restored. He was well-liked by Triumph folks worldwide, andJon Mac (John McCartney) wanted to honor him.

I first saw uncle jack at a Perkins restaurant in Iowa at the end of August 2009.Several Minnesota Triumphs members went down to meet John McCartney onhis way in from Omaha. The next day I rode with John to Minneapolis for anoil change at Quality Coaches (Thanks, Mark!) and then to the Square Peg forour car show. (Let me pause here to again thank Phyllis, Andy, Linda and Suefor all their help making that weekend work.) On that ride, I was impressed withthe feel of the car and started to wonder what would become of it after thecharity tour was over. Sue and I had dinner with John that night and formed afast friendship. After the Cherokee Park picnic on Sunday, we got in the Saturn(the TR4 was apart for new tunnel and carpet) and followed the Stag to Fargo, with an overnight in Alexandria. After a nice lunch with Fargo car folks, Johntook uncle jack north to Canada.

We didn't get to see uncle jack again until we met up with John and his wife Lizin Danville, California. Sue and I got to sit in the Stag at the convention and getour picture taken.

Finally in Colorado, on our way back home from the convention, we got thechance to drive it. Sue and I took turns tooling around the neighborhood. Wehad a great dinner with the Merrells and the Macartneys. The next day we wereon our way in the rental motorhome and the Macartneys flew to New York. Itmade us a little sad that we may never see them face-to-face again.

Not until January of this year were we able to bid on the Stag. We won theauction and funds were dispatched. The Sidran Institute was very grateful forthe donation.

So here it was winter in Minnesota and all of our storage options were full of cars.We told Glenn Merrell that when the spring weather turned nice we would fly toDenver and drive the Stag back. Joe Pawlak had other ideas. He insisted we returnthe car to him in rural Illinois so he could attend to some things on the car. Wehired FedEx (no, we did not have to cut the car into 75-pound pieces) to deliver itto Joe's door. Joe and the Illinois Sports Owners Association spiffed it up to haveit ready for us on May 15.

Meanwhile, back in Saint Paul, we put up the Miata and the TR4 for sale and wereastonished at how quickly they moved. Ironically, the TR4 went to a gentlemanwho lives in San Antonio, 14 miles from where I bought it ten years ago when wejoined Minnesota Triumphs. I even put him in touch with Brad Kahler so he couldbuy back the 1962 Texas plates it used to wear.

The shop was looking a little empty, and we were Triumphless for the early-springevents. When May 14 finally rolled around, we hooked up the trailer and headedfor Illinois. Saturday Sue performed a license-plate transplant.

That afternoon several Triumphs assembled for a romp through the countryside.Wow. After pizza, it was time to drive uncle jack into the trailer.

The next day, it came to its new home. Sue drove to White Bear Lake to show hermother her new car. As Sue gave her mom a ride around the lake, I was happy totake a back seat. I was also happy to HAVE a back seat that would take ME. Thegrandchildren have outgrown the TR4.

We took both uncle jack and the Super Seven to the InterMarque Kickoff at Como.We got a couple of hours in before the rains. The weather was fine that eveningfor the Downtown Beat cruise in Saint Paul, so we took both cars (topless) and allof the grandchildren.

Many thanks to all the dedicated folks at the Illinois Sports Owners Association(ISOA) for all the work they have done on this car. The PTSD charities in theUSA, Canada and the UK have benefited from their efforts. Many thanks to JohnMacartney, the spark plug behind this crazy wonderful plan, and to Glenn and SueMerrell, Joe and Kathy Pawlak, and the late Chuck Kittelson.

Be sure to tell them this is in honor of the Triumph Trans-AmeriCan Charity Drive 2009. Or just make out a check to SidranInstitute and give it to Sue or me.

May 8, 2010, 6:00 a.m. Rich Stadther pulls up at my driveway. His Jeep

SUV has a small open trailer behind it. The temperature is in the 40s,

and Linda's dad warned her not to drive up to their place in North

Dakota for Mother's Day because of treacherous snow. Luckily, we're

not headed to North Dakota.

We are, however, headed to Laona, Wisconsin, and there are reports of snowthere as well. Rich is not worried. “It'll be melting by the time we get there.” I,on the other hand, am worried. It's my new (old) car we're going to pick up.

Off on I-94 we go. It's warm in the Jeep and a cup of caffeine keeps the eyelidsup. We exit on Wisconsin 29 in order to maintain our easterly direction at aboutthe same latitude. One stop for gas and a SuperMom pastry. Then we hitWausau and head north on Highway 51. Patches of snow begin to appear on theside of the road. Our intent is to take 51 north to Highway 8 and then head eastto Rhinelander and then Laona. We miss the turnoff during a discussion of1950s race cars and don't notice our mistake for twenty miles. Our planned 10:30Laona arrival has to be cranked back a bit. The snow/rain showers we runthrough don't slow us down but the patches of snow on the side of the road haveexpanded to a thick carpet.

Shortly after eleven we arrive at the Joppa residence in Laona. We're looking atthe driveway to the house and miss the drive to the shop. As we pull past it,Leroy Joppa is pushing out a 1959 Austin-Healey Sprite, and Sue is waving forus to stop. We do and Rich backs the trailer in. The Sprite goes up on the trailer,we take some pics, and then Sue invites us in for lunch and the ceremonialexchange of title and check. I'm a happy camper.

Our arrival back home is without incident. Rich has other plans so can't stay fordinner. The Sprite doesn't have any plates on it but Linda and I drive it aroundthe neighborhood anyhow. It's fun.p.s. I'm not a big one on car names, but sincethe 2CV had one (Pepe le Bleu) people have asked whether I intend to name theSprite. I don't know, but the best I've been able to come up with so far is ,the auto formerly known as Sprite.” Smiley for short.

TWO VINEYARD TOURS by Andy LindbergOn June 6, the Brits got 30+ cars and steady rain on theirvisit to Woodland Hills Winery near Delano; on June 7, theFrench got ten cars and a lot of sun at Alexis Bailly Vineyardnear Hastings.

The British event (the 1st Annual British Sports Car Display)saw a large population of Triumphs with some MGs, Healeys,Jags, and Minis. Plus, a hot rod Morris and a smattering ofwatertight cars like Miatas, a BMW Z3, and an Audi TT.

The French event on the other hand was all Citroën, mostlyDS and 2CV models but with an SM and CX thrown in forvariety. (There were also rumors of a fintail Mercedes lurkingabout, but your correspondent cannot confirm this.)

So which vino event was the best? The British clearly had thenumbers but Mère Nature smiled on the French.

RENDEZVOUS 2010The Thunder Bay Vintage Sports Car Club

INVITES YOU TO

Wake the GiantAt the

20th Annual

Lake Superior Vintage Sports Car RendezvousIn Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

June 17th, 18th, 19th, 2010

Bring out your classic sports or touring car for a weekend of motoring fun and games.

The Lake Superior Vintage Sports Car RendezvousIN

Thunder Bay

This event was first held in Thunder Bay in 1991 with the support of the Austin Healey Club of

Manitoba. Local efforts on the part of a few enthusiastic sports car owners yielded a great weekend

(even though it rained) with 37 cars registered. Local interest continued to develop and the Thunder

Bay Vintage Sports Car Club was formed the following year. Our American Austin Healey guests had

such a great time that they decided to host the event in 1992 and it has since become an annual event.

The event is currently being hosted on a rotating basis by various clubs on both sides of the border.

In 2010, the event will be held at the Best Western Nor’Wester Resort Hotel on Highway 61 in Thunder

Bay Ontario. Come celebrate 20 years of cross-border motoring. A gymkhana and rally are planned as

well as tours of local points of interest including a trip to Russ Wanzuk’s museum of old racing cars

and motoring memorabilia. A Friday night BBQ is planned, and perhaps you may find time to squeeze

in a round of golf! Stay tuned!

FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT:

Nor’Wester Resort Hotel: www.bestwestern.com/prop_66055 Phone: 807-473-9123

As this is the 20th Anniversary, we are hoping this will be our biggest turnout yet! So register early!

NOTE: Please be aware that as of June 1st, 2009 the requirements for Travel Documents to re-

enter the United States has changed. Please check that you have the correct documents.
