Dear EWTN Media Missionary,

As we enter into the Holy Season of Lent, I am reminded of a story that an elderly priest shared with me about a brief personal audience he had, shortly after his ordination, with Pope Paul VI, now Pope St. Paul VI. In the course of their conversation, the Holy Father showed the newly ordained priest his pectoral cross and asked, Who do you see on the cross? The priest responded, Jesus Christ. The Pope then turned the cross over and said, Who do you see here? No one, the priest responded. The Pope then said, That place is for you.

Yes, that place, united with Christ upon His cross, a death like His that we may have a life like His. That is the place for you, the place for me, and the place for all of God’s children. St. Paul illustrates, with his words and life, the Pope’s point to the young priest:

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

As we enter into this Holy Season of Lent, in the midst of all the piety, devotions and liturgies, it does seem to come down to responding to Christ’s call to unite ourselves with Him upon the cross. He is inviting us, offering us a gracious place with Him upon His blessed cross. That Place is for you!

May this Lenten Season, Holy Week, and Easter be the best of your life!
