Arguments to Avoid When Planning Your Wedding

Congratulations! You’re engaged! An excellent excuse to spend thousands on a dress; with showers and parties in your honor. But there is always the downside: screaming at each other over the guests list, rolling eyes and hissing at each other at the bridal boutiques and stores. Your period of engagement can become a battlefield filled with hot topics that causes huge face-offs. Sometimes a seating chart isn’t just a seating chart. Planning your wedding is often the most practical experience you both will have in terms of identifying the things you will most likely disagree on during your marriage – here’s how to resolve them.

Money: Do not spend your way out of a honeymoon and into debt. Financial arguments are ten times more frequent than any other argument and can leave a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth. Bride and Groom should crate a budget and allocate a portion to each item. If by chance you need to go over the budget this decision should be consensual.

Guest list: Once a budget has

been created, you would have decided on the amount of guests to invite. To avoid arguments about who is inviting more persons than the other, this list should be divided equally between the couple. If the list is not divided equally this should be discussed and should be consensual.

Grooms Involvement (or lack thereof): Wedding planning has been viewed as a woman’s job since the beginning of time; however, things and time has change and men should not be excluded from the planning. This is not a simple issue because his input will be needed on a lot of things throughout the marriage, and this will be a good place to start. Rarely will a man give his opinion and women should encourage him by asking questions such as “what colors would you like?” “How do you envision the décor?” etc.

Wedding location: Not because your mom got married in a church means you have to follow sit. Wedding locations can bring fierce arguments as persons may decide that a particular location should be used whilst the other wants a traditional wedding. Both parties should decide on the pros and cons of each location chosen, with very little outside help as this may cause more problems.

Décor: Couples that are equally involved in the planning of their wedding may find that they have different ideas when choosing color schemes and overall decor. He likes olive green; you like pink… arguments are bound to happen if a consensus is not reach. “Decide on priorities by having each person rate on a scale of one to ten the

importance of each detail.

Remember, its good practice to learn early on how to prioritize, negotiate, and compromise. These skills will come in very handy later on.”

Friends: Not because you were the Bestman or Maid of Honor at a friends wedding, means that you should expect the same courtesies in return. Carefully decide who to ask to be your main man and woman on your special day. Be cautious to detect the ‘their way or the highway persons’ and the persons who keep leading you on without ever getting anything done (this person could cause your plans to go awry, even if properly planned).Hint! Use a friend/family member who is as serious as you both are about your wedding day.

Bridezilla/Groomzilla: Yes! Men can be just as overbearing as women, especially when they care for every detail on the big day. If the wedding has become more important than your relationship, that’s a warning sign. Try not to plan a wedding at all cost including that of your relationship; what’s the point?

The Past: He is good friends with an old girlfriend and wants her to attend the wedding. You on the other hand wished she would die; oh grow up! You’ve already won, he chose you. Don’t change the mood of things by being petty and jealous. These aren’t good traits for any spouse. Try getting to know her and you might just like her yourself. Perhaps you could even invite her to help out with a shower or party.

People of colour can be found all over the Globe. For far too long darker skinned persons have been either using the incorrect products or does not follow as set regime as they are of the opinion that “darker is tougher” and they are not susceptible to skin cancer.

The American Academy of Dermatology stated that people of colour currently make up 35% of the US population. This is expected to rise dramatically over the next decade. Jamaica, with a population of over 2.5 million persons is predominantly made up with persons of colour. They account for over 90% this total.

Ethnic skin tones vary from a light brown to a deep chocolate brown depending on the amount of melanin present in the skin. Melanin is the protein responsible for the colour of the skin, eyes and hair; and as such the darker the skin the more melanin is present and vice versa. Skin care for people of ethnic descent cannot be ignored and extreme care must be taken when treating skin of colour.

Nuptials spoke with Nicole Wright, Principal of Deep Skin Therapy who shared with us how persons can take care of their skin.

“As within so without…” were the first words of advice. A healthy diet is ultimately your first and best skin care investment. The healthier your diet , the less you may find you need to invest in expensive skin care products. While you will still need to keep your skin clean and moisturized, a healthy diet will be the best first step you can take in any skin care regimen. She recommends:

• drinking 0-0 ounces of water per day for hydration of the skin

• A hefty supply of antioxidants, mainly vitamin A, C, E and selenium (referred to as the ACES).

• Omission of refined sugars to decrease incidence of inflammation, a known skin assailant

• An adequate amount of lean protein for the repair and growth of muscle fibers in the face and throughout the body

• Plenty of essential fatty acids for the proper lubrication of cells, including skin cells, which enhance appearance

• A quality multivitamin to supply skin with essential vitamins and minerals,

such as zinc, vitamin C, B-complex, vitamin E and vitamin A, to name a few.

Besides the antioxidants, zinc is a well-researched mineral that helps diminish reddened skin areas. Zinc is abundant in nuts, poultry, salmon and oats. Supplemental dose recommendation is 0 milligrams. The B vitamins are also highly recommended for the health of the skin, hair and nails. Eating plenty of legumes such as chickpeas, pinto beans, nuts and fatty fish (salmon and mackerel) will ensure that a B-vitamin deficiency is not present.

She also recommended cleansing, toning, moisturizing and exfoliating. Her products of choice include sunscreen, products with Glycolic acid for exfoliating and products with salicylic acid. If you suffer from dry skin she recommends you constantly exfoliate and use a rich moisturizer.

Skin Care Tips Planning a Successful Wedding

Skin Care TipsYou are engaged! That was the easy part; planning your wedding will not only take time but some ingenuity. There are some basic rules to follow when planning a wedding, which will not only save you heartache, stress, arguments but most of all money.

Budget

Always create a budget. Too often persons want to re-create that “movie star” wedding they saw only to find themselves in debt. First rule of thumb is to work within the budget you have created, not factoring in contributions either from family or your bridal registry unless you have the cash in hand.

Knowledge

You are not expected to become wedding planners overnight, however, try to get as au-fait as possible with the different vendors in the market and their offerings. Reviewing weddings will give you an excellent idea of the different touches that can make your wedding very special. You will be able to set attainable goals as you would have already created your budget.

Contracts

Once you have selected a vendor and a contract has been created, carefully read

the contents. If this vendor was acquired through a third party, request additional time to review before signing. Always ask questions if you are not sure.

Ensure that everything has been clearly outlined especially:

• Cancellation policy

• Returns

• Cost for added service

Click the link to view a list of vendors you will need when planning a basic wedding.

Finally, once the money has exchanged hands (either through debit/credit card or hard cash) ensure you get a receipt. This receipt should clearly state:

• What was paid for

• Date of transaction

• Sales person

• Balance (if applicable)

Decor

Weddings should be elegant affairs. This means that your décor should be subtle, tasteful and beautiful. They should not be over done or vulgar. Vulgarity can also extend to how the bridal party is groomed. Clothing should be well tailored and fits the person well.

Attitude

Be pleasant, courteous and kind. No one relish interacting with a “sour puss”. Vendors may not be able to pick and choose their clients. They are often times more likely to go overboard in pleasing a pleasant potential customer than a miserable one. Clients that are pleasant, courteous and kind are far easier to work with and may get add-ons thrown in just for bringing them the business.

Prayer

Last, but definately not least, prayer. Pray for each other, pray with each other, for guidance and for a healthy marriage.

Happy planning!
