We would like to introduce the new Library Liaison Program created to fostercommunication between the Library and UAMS education, research, clinical, and outreachprograms. The Librarian Liaison Program matches a librarian (or, in some cases, twolibrarians) with a college, department, or Institute of Excellence so that the liaisonlibrarian can develop a relationship with the program and concentrate on the particularneeds of the program (e.g.,College of Nursing, COM Department of Radiology, Institute onAging). In some cases, a librarian will act as a liaison to a committee or group (e.g.,Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Antenatal and Neonatal Guidelines,Education and Learning System (ANGELS), and UAMS Teaching with TechnologyCommittee).

As Library resources and services grow and change, the Liaison Program will keep ourfaculty, students, and staff up-to-date so that they can use Library resources mosteffectively and expeditiously. The Library liaisons are interested in how the Library canbetter serve information needs of the programs.

In addition to providing updates on new resources and services, the Library liaisons canarrange the following services:

advanced literature searching by expert searchersconsultations and specialized search strategy developmentlibrary orientations, tours, presentations, and training sessionscurriculum based activities for studentscollaborative participation in evaluating online resourcestailored library servicesintroduction to the Access Grid facilities, Teaching Resource Center, LearningResource Centerwork with faculty to integrate research and information management skills into thecurriculumassistance with copyright and fair use questions.

Several librarians have specialized expertise in searching, evidence-based medicine, openaccess publishing, copyright issues, and other topics. The Library liaisons will call onthese librarians when their expertise is requested for training sessions or presentations.

The Library has begun contacting colleges, departments, institutes and others aboutsetting up a liaison program with their unit. The following liaisons are in place:

In 2003 the Library’s Historical Research Center (HRC) received an innocent soundingphone call from Bonnie Axelson in Chicago. She wanted to know more about one of herancestors, Dr. Annie Schoppach. Bonnie had been told that Annie was the first femalegraduate of what is now UAMS, and wanted more information.

A couple of years later Richard Clark, M.D. submitted an article to the Pulaski CountyHistorical Society concerning Dr. Schoppach. The article, “Dr. Annie Schoppach: FirstFemale Graduate of UAMS,” was published in the Winter 2005 issue of the Pulaski CountyHistorical Review.

On April 9, 2006 Bonnie and Roy Axelson were in attendance at the Pulaski CountyHistorical Society’s presentation on “Dr. Annie Schoppach: First Woman Graduate ofMedical School and Practitioner in Hard Times.”

Sharon Keel, with help from Amanda Saar, did much of the research for both the articleand the presentation. Bonnie was gracious enough to share photographs andinformation, and is continuing to look for items that might be of interest to the HistoricalResearch Center.

The HRC has the matriculation and registration books for the early years of UAMS, aswell as other material about medical care and its practitioners in the early days ofArkansas, which could be useful for researchers.

We have been having reports that on occasion people are having a problem gettingjournal articles in a PDF file from the Internet to print. Since the problem is sporadic thismakes it difficult to diagnose, and even harder to fix. Within the Library we are currentlytracking reports of PDF files not printing so that we can try to find a permanent fix forthe problem.

In the mean time here is a work around:

1. The Client has the PDF file on the screen (in a browser/reader) and has tried to print.Printing failed. Check to make sure you have a printer installed.

2. If there is a printer attached and it still doesn’t work, go to the Adobe Toolbar andlook for the icon that looks like a diskette. That is the “Save A Copy” function. Save thePDF file (identify the file title) to My Documents on the hard drive of the computer fortemporary storage.

3. Go to the computers My Documents.

4. Double click on the PDF file name (the title you previously identified). Adobe Reader onthe PC will open up the file. It should look exactly like the file from the Internet.

5. Now go to the Adobe Toolbar and look for the icon that looks like a printer. Click on itand it should bring up the print box.

6. Check to see that the first field contains the name of the correct printer. If that is OK,then go to the bottom of the print box screen and click on the OK button.

7. The print job will be sent to your printer.

Get to Know Web of Science!EZ exercise for UAMSers

The Library has exciting news. We now have a campus-wide subscription to Web ofScience! In addition to PubMed, this provides a tremendous resource as a secondscience-heavy database and an invaluable tool for tracking cited references of publishedworks. What exactly does it include?

Science Citation Index 1945 – PresentSocial Sciences Citation Index 1985 – Present

Web of Science (WOS) provides expansive navigation of citations. You can movebackwards in time by clicking Cited References; forward in time via the Times Cited linkand expand your search using the Related Records feature.

There are various levels of searches including the General Search which is designed to beeasy to use with little training. There is also the Advanced Search mode option whereyou can build complex search strategies.

Below is a sample record from a general search. Note: This article contained 31references and has been cited 306 times. Each of these links is searchable.

WOS is available off the library’s database list at: http://www.library.uams.edu/resources/databases.aspx

Remote UAMS faculty, staff and students will have access through our proxy server usingyour campus domain login.

The Library will be setting up training classes for WOS shortly. Keep an eye on this spotfor more Web Of Science news

G e t t i n g t o K n o w W e b o f S c i e n c e

Things to know in advance:#1 - Web of Science can be slow in doing some of the more complex functions#2 - you can access it from home#3 - there are really great tutorials and educational materials located on the Web ofScience main page

You begin with selecting Web of Science from the ‘Databases’ list on the Library’s website(http://www.library.uams.edu). Then go to 'Web of Science'.

ISI Web of Knowledge Opening Page lists resources available to UAMS

This exercise will cover Journal Citation Reports and Web of Science.(CrossSearch is a quick search using keywords only that goes across multiple databases.

You can see what they are under in ‘What databases am I searching?’ You can do amore refined search by adding more search fields.)

Web of ScienceLet’s try out Web of Science.

Click on ‘General Search’; this allows for searching by topic, author, source, publication, and address.

Let’s use MD Cave as our example (Dr. Cave has graciously agreed to be our example):

In the ‘Author’ search box, put 'cave md' and click ‘Search’.We get a list of MD Cave’s publications starting with the most recent articles.

Sort by ‘Times Cited’.

Dr. Cave’s most cited article has been cited 979 timesin the journals covered by Web of Science.

Record #6, an article in JAMA, sounds pretty good to me. Click on the title. You will see a Full Record with citation information.Check out ‘Cited References’ to see references used for this article.Check out ‘ Times Cited’ to see a list of articles that cited this article.Check out ‘Find Related Records’ to see what articles have cited some of the samereferences.

Click on ‘Check for UAMS Full Text’ to see if we have the article online. In this case, wedo. In the header for this article, you will see ‘Finding Citing Articles’. This lists the 27articles that Ovid found that cited this article. Not as many as the 112 found by Web ofScience. If this were a serious search, you might want to double check this list as well.

On the right side of the page are lots of functions. ‘Create Citation Alert’ sets up an emailalert to notify you when another article cites this article. You have to register (for free)to take advantage of this.

You can also look at the Medline record that gives you access to PubMed’s Related ArticleSummary. In this search it lists 141 related articles.

You can also look at the Journal Citation Reports information on JAMA.

Now we know that Dr. Cave is interested in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Click on ‘General Search’ to get back to the search page.

Put Mycobacterium tuberculosis in as a topic and hit ‘search’. For this example take 'cave md' out of the ‘Author’ box. You could leave it in for a search of his articles onmycobacterium tuberculosis, but this time take his name out.

Sort by ‘Times Cited’. You will see what articles on mycobacterium tuberculosis havebeen cited. There’s Dr. Cave’s article as the 3rd most cited article.

You can analyze the results of this search for mycobacterium tuberculosis by clicking on‘Analyse’ on the right sidebar. Since these are the most cited mycobacteriumtuberculosis articles, you can find out who are the most active authors in this field byanalyzing by author. This can be very slow so analyze the first 500 most cited articlesand display the first 10. Dr. Cave is not listed in the top ten most prolific authors in the

Page 15: Spring is in the Air! - UAMS Library · The Reference Collection has been reorganized to be filed strictly by National Library of Medicine call number, like the rest of the books in

Web Of Science

http://www.library.uams.edu/newsletter/lnl06/mar_apr/WebOfScience.aspx[6/15/2011 4:18:15 PM]

field. Change to top 25 authors. Dr. Cave shows up with 10 out of the 500 most citedarticles.

On this same screen, change the ‘Select field to rank by:’ to Institution Name. If youare looking through the first 500 records and show the top 25, you’ll find UAMS in thelist. Looking for articles with a UAMS author is interesting, too.

To check on authors at UAMS, go back to the ‘General Search’ page.

Take ‘mycobacterium tuberculosis’ out of the Topic box.

Put ‘univ Arkansas med sci’ into the Address box. You should use this specificabbreviation. You can see the most recent articles published by UAMS authors. It is closeto being in order chronologically with the latest article at the top. However, there areminor variations because it depends on when the article was indexed – not just when itwas published. WOS has fast indexing so there won’t be too much variance. This searchmay also vary if you alter the abbreviation of the institution name. For example - 'UnivArkansas Med Sci Hosp' and 'UAMS' will bring in different results. This variation comesfrom different authors using varying names for the same institution.

Now sort by ‘Times Cited’ to see the most cited articles by UAMS authors.

Well, this is probably all the time either of us has for now. There is so much in thisresource that you can explore. So, feel free to explore and share with others.

Also, please remember, Web of Science searches over 8400 journals and yet there arestill other tools to use to be complete. No tool covers everything, but we believe Web ofScience does best.

Check out PubMed’s related articles and Google Scholar as well.

Journal Citation ReportsNow let’s look at Journal Citation Reports.

2004 is the latest year available at this time.Click on ‘Information for New Users’ if you aren’t familiar with JCR.Go back and select ‘View a group of journals by Subject Category’.Select a category you are interested in. I chose ‘neurosciences’. You can select morethan one category if you wish. Here you can also select how you want the informationsorted. You can also resort them later on the next webpage.

The Journal Summary List page is packed with interesting information. You can sort by‘Impact Factor’ and various ways. Click on a journal title and you can learn how thevarious columns are calculated. This is the same information you would see if you hadselected ‘Search for a specific title’ on the JCR opening page. You can check out all5,969 journals in JCR as well. Click on ‘Home’ to return to Web of Knowledge webpage.

Remember those bubble-sheets you filled outwith a #2 pencil? UAMS Library’s TeachingResource Center has software that brings thatconvenient method of data collection to your PC.

Remark Office OMR is a software package designed to collect the data from optical marks(bubbles or checkboxes) and barcodes on plain paper forms. The software works inconjunction with a sheet-fed flatbed scanner to collect the marks. You can create your ownsurvey or test forms in Word or whatever application you feel comfortable with. There is agreat deal of flexibility in the design process because you don’t need special marks, or specialink, nor do your respondents need to use a number 2 pencil to fill in the forms.

Many on campus are already taking advantage of this software. It is being used for grantresearch on medical records, end-of-course surveys for Mini-Med School and several others.Don’t hesitate to call or come by the Teaching Resource Center on the 3rd floor of the Libraryif this sounds like a product that may meet your data collection needs.
