Fellowship and Administration

Search Process:

The search committee continues to make great pro-gress. We started out with receiving applications from 23 candidates. After prayerful consideration and discussion, we chose 12 candidates to conduct initial telephone inter-views with. Those telephone interviews have been com-pleted. At the conclusion of that process, we chose a total of six candidates with exceptional qualities and experience to move on to the next phase, parish visits.

The parish visit process began the weekend of Feb. 13-14 and will continue through the weekend of March 5-6. During these visits, members of the search team visit the home parishes of the candidates. Our team will attend one or two services where the candidate is the celebrant and preacher. We will observe their preaching styles, their litur-gical styles and generally how they interact with their con-gregation. Where possible, we will also speak to several members of their congregation to gain insight into how the candidate relates to the congregation and community. In addition, the search team will share a meal with the candi-date and his or her spouse. It is a time to talk more in depth about the candidate, their experience and what quali-ties s(he) would bring to All Saints’ if the Vestry calls them to become our new rector.

A Prayer for the Rector’s Search Almighty and ever living God,

source of all wisdom and understanding. We at All Saints’ Church are asking

your guidance and direction as a people of faith to help us in the coming months.

Guide us as we pray and work together

to call a new rector; grant us both the courage to pursue your will

and the grace to accomplish it. Bring us together to be of one heart, mind, and spirit,

united in the holy bond of love and faith in you. For His Sake, Amen.

As we enter the final stages of our work in the search process, we humbly ask that you continue to pray for mem-bers of the search committee, the candidates and their fam-ilies, and the congregations of their parishes as well as All Saints’. As always, if you have any questions, please contact any members of the search committee.

RAISING SAINTS: Fostering Faith and Friendship Calling all big saints who have little saints—yes, that’s

right, All Saints’ has a group called “Raising Saints” and it’s for anyone raising a child between the ages of 0-18. We spend time together socially outside of church to foster friendships that originated in worship activities such as weekly services, Sunday School and All Saints’ Summer Day Camp. Using a private page on Facebook, we are able to connect with each other instantly and coordinate events such as pot luck picnics at local parks or a trip to a local bowling alley. There is no cost to be part of this group and no events are mandatory. Some outings are for moms or dads only, but most are for the whole family. There is something for everyone! Please consider joining our group by sending an email to Brooke Robinson, brooke.g.robinson @gmail.com or Rebecca Couture, rcouture @comcast.net.

WEEKDAY YOGA AT ALL SAINTS’ Some of you may know that in my life outside of All

Saints’, I’ve been teaching yoga since 2012. Since New Year’s, I’ve had quite a few parishioners ask me if I would be willing to start a class during the lunch hour that met at church, and it sounds like a wonderful Lenten idea!

During the months of February and March, I’ll teach a gentle, all-levels class on Wednesdays at noon, pay-what-you-will. Bring a yoga mat and a full-size bathtowel, and I hope to see you there!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Do you knit or crochet?

Do you know how to knit or crochet? Are you look-ing to join a ministry and never have to leave home? The Prayer Shawl ministry is looking for new members. We get together on the first Saturday morning of the month. At-tendance is not required because most of the knitting and crocheting is done at home. The shawls provide “hugs” for those who need comfort in some way, whether because of an illness, grief or despair. They may also be for the celebration of a life, as in a baby blanket.

We have recently had requests for many of the shawls and our stock pile has dwindled. We desperately need help with creating more of the shawls that wrap and comfort those in need. There is nothing difficult in the work; be-ginners can easily work up a shawl. If you are interested in helping or would like more information, please contact Sue Fowle at 301-694-6866 or [email protected].

A Note of Gratitude and Thanks As I write this note, I am back at seminary and finish-

ing up my last semester. But the memory of my ordination to the transitional diaconate is still with me in large part because of the outpouring of love you all showed through your presence, prayers, notes, and gifts honoring my ordi-nation. I cannot tell you what it meant to me when Bishop Chilton introduced the newest deacons in the Episcopal Church and the entire congregation in the cathedral erupted into a thunderous applause. My heart overflowed with thanksgiving for all of you as I caught glimpses of so many parish family members. And a thank you to Fr. Earl and Rev. Jess who graciously invited me to live into my role as a new deacon for the first time the following day.

What a journey it has been—and it continues. I will be graduating from seminary, leaving New York City at the end of May and returning home. I am working with Bish-op Chilton and the diocesan staff as I search for a call with-in the diocese. I will keep you updated as things progress. You remain in my daily prayers as you also move closer to calling your next spiritual leader. Thank you again for your steadfast love and support throughout my journey towards ordination.

—Nancy Hennessey

In the Diocese

A message from Bishop Sutton: On Sabbatical in South Africa I’ve been taking part of my sabbatical here at Mariya uMama weThemba Monastery in Grahamstown, South Africa (one

of the houses of the Episcopal Order of the Holy Cross, USA). I’ve stayed here on pilgrimage many years ago, but I had for-gotten how time goes by very slowly in a Benedictine community. The pace is definitely unlike my charged up life back home! I begin the day praying in the chapel with the brothers at 6:00 am Vigils, and throughout the day for Lauds, Eucharist, Midday Prayers, Evening Prayer and Compline. In between joining the community at prayer at set times, I am able to read, write, meditate, take long walks and receive spiritual direction. . . . The monastery is beautifully tucked away in the hills surrounding and overlooking the town. The si-lence of the hills is pervasive, and all seems to be at rest, at any time of day or night. Everything is slowed down here – yes, in the monastery, but also in the small, quaint city of Grahamstown itself.

Clocks are everywhere on various towers and steeples in this town . . . Some of the clocks are still ticking along nicely, but others do so erratically, and a few are stopped dead in their tracks. You have to be a local to know which ones are more or less accurate – but nobody seems to mind.

For many years in the 19th century when time was not standard, the local time in Graham-stown was calculated by the military, and announced everyday by the firing of a gun at 9:00 am from Fort Selwyn on Gunfire Hill just outside of town. Obviously, this had considerable draw-backs. Even though it was a loud blast, apparently some still failed to set their various timepieces to it, resulting in a generally confused sense of time. Also, the elderly artillery man whose job it was to serve as Old Father Time would occasionally subtract or add a half-hour or so depending on when he’d get around to doing the task.

The absence of a public clock to set to Grahamstown Mean Time made the establishment of an orderly communal life extremely difficult. In 1853 the idea of paying for a public clock by raising taxes was raised. You can figure out how that went over. Finally, 20 years later in 1873, the first clock was installed at the Cathedral, and others soon followed.

But here is where it gets interesting. In 1884, one Henry Carter Galpin installed a magnificently- designed Meridian Room in the local court of justice, with a north/south line on the floor to accurately ascertain Grahamstown time – which is exactly 14 minutes behind South Africa Standard Time! Thus noon in Grahamstown occurs at 12:14 elsewhere in the nation. Time marches on, yes, but apparently at a slower pace here than anywhere else in this part of the world.

Of course, I realize that all of this is a moot point with the ever-present wristwatches, cell phones, computers and other modern chronographs govern over our schedules. Nobody really pays attention anymore to 19th century Meridian rooms, artillery guns and old steeple clocks. But somehow I like the fact that Grahamstown – this charming little town of 52 church-es (one for each week of the year) and venerable schools and colleges – hasn’t found the need to change the public clocks.

Some might say that Grahamstown is still behind the times, by considerably more than a quarter of an hour. There is a palpable sense here of a bygone era, a genteel life of a time long ago, enjoyed by a relative few. No obvious sense here of 200 years of wars . . . of the strife of the racial hatred and apartheid that marked most of the 20th century. Now, white students and black students populate the streets quite freely, and you might get the sense that change was painless here. But just as time moved slowly here, so did social change, with customs and attitudes of the past still haunting the present. The future is still uncertain in this place that still holds on to the past with a loosening but unmistakable grip.

Time will tell what the future may hold for this town and for this country: this beautiful rainbow mix of ethnic groups that make up South Africa. We can all be impressed with their progress only 20 years after the fall of apartheid and Nelson Mandela becoming the first black president of the “New South Africa”. After over 200 years in our American democracy, are we any further along in our own struggles for racial and economic justice? Yes, South Africa needs more time to perfect its multiracial, democratic experiment. But I have a feeling that this small city of Grahamstown, with its old clocks, churches, colleges, seminaries and monasteries, will find the time to model for the rest of the world how diverse peoples under God can live together in harmony.

I’ve found that you really can take your time here…all the time that you need. Perhaps we in America can learn to do the same – and not just on sabbaticals. “Time present and time past / Are both perhaps present in time future, / And time fu-ture contained in time past.” -from Four Quartets, T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)
