Restoring a historic building can be a challenge. It isoften difficult to know where to begin and who to turn to forassistance and advice.

As you plan your project, remember that a historic Nan-tucket house is a community treasure, with its own historyand set of historic elements. No two historic buildings arealike, and the more you preserve and protect, the more au-thentic, valuable and rewarding your home will be.

Here are some tips for restoring your historic Nantuckethouse.

Consider the big picture. Why undertake a restorationproject at this time? For many people, the answer is that newmechanicals or kitchen and baths are desired or the houseis a new purchase and updating is necessary. As a stewardof an island resource you will need to accomplish your goalswhile protecting and enhancing your home’s historic ele-ments.

First learn about your home’s history and architecture. Before you begin the work, learn more about your house.Every house has a story to tell—not just who built it and whoowned it over the years, but how the house evolved gradu-ally over time to meet the needs of succeeding owners. Un-derstanding the architectural evolution of the house and itshistory is key to proper restoration. The Nantucket Preser-vation Trust can help you learn more with a free “house con-sultation” – a simple walk-through to point out historicelements and changes. Complete historic research and achain of title. NPT can assist in this process.

Hire an architect and/or contractor who understand(s)your needs and the importance of retaining historic fabric.Communicating your desire to retain the historic feel of yourproperty is essential. A talented and sensitive architect andcontractor also can help steer you through a more challeng-ing and interesting effort to preserve your home’s character, while at the same time make needed repairs and improve-ments.

Limit the scope of repairs. Keep original details. Don’tover-restore. Your philosophy toward restoring your homeshould be like that of a physician: “first, do no harm.” Al-though some historic elements may need attention, avoidunnecessary repairs and over-finishing. Replace only theportion of elements that are damaged. Replications of mold-ing profiles and other elements will help retain your build-ing’s historic character. Keep old wood as much as possible.New wood will not wear like the original, which is denserand will continue to perform well as long as any rotten sec-tions are repaired.

Retain the historic plan and features. The historic lay-out should be retained whenever possible. New kitchen andbaths should be added in areas that cause the least amountof damage to original fabric. Defining elements should beretained and can include transoms (that small band of win-dowpanes above doorways); paneled doors with old hard-ware; mantels; ceiling medallions; and moldings arounddoorways and windows, where walls meet ceilings, picturemoldings, and chair rails. Other important Nantucket fea-tures such as old mirror boards (moldings or woodwork be-tween windows) also should be retained. Keep the winderstaircases, which have served houses on Nantucket for cen-turies and are beautifully constructed. If new stairs are re-quired, consider adding straight-run stairs in new additionsor areas outside the historic core. But be cautious in the re-movable of wings and other elements; rear ells may be orig-inal and are often important to the historic character of the

house and surrounding neighborhood.Keep the plaster walls. In the past, plaster was routinely

torn out, even by well-meaning preservationists, to make iteasier to install new mechanical systems and wiring. Butgrouping those components and snaking them through thewalls can be accomplished. Plaster is far superior to moderndrywall since it isn’t ruined if it gets wet. It also provides ex-cellent soundproofing and can be patch-repaired.

Take special care with your wood floors. Many peoplecorrectly want to retain the old floors in a historic house, butthere is a right way—and a wrong way—to deal with them.Old flooring is often over-sanded, reducing the floor’s lifespan and at the same time destroying its antique character.Old floors were hand-planed, and gentle hand-sanding orchemical removable of paint and finishes is the best way toprotect them. Simple cleaning and waxing will retain the oldpatina, too.

Maintain the quirks. Straighten that crooked window ordoorway? Not necessarily. Treasure the things that show ev-idence of how your house evolved over the generations. Yourhouse will be more charming and authentic as a result. It ispossible to make structural repairs and still keep those ele-ments that give the house a real Nantucket sense of place.

Restore—don’t replace—historic windows. Windowsare key elements of old houses. Old windows were made tobe repaired, not replaced. Unlike today’s windows almost allpre-1940 window frames were built of high-quality, densewood in easy-to-assemble parts. Maintenance of old win-dows generally involves keeping them painted and in goodworking order. Old windows can easily be made energy ef-ficient by adding sensitive storm windows and weatherstripping. Keep in mind that, unlike original windows, re-placement windows will need to be replaced.

Take special care in repairing masonry. Portland ce-ment is usually not compatible with historic brick, and itsuse can lead to structural damage and moisture problemsthat can spread to other areas. Of particular concern onNantucket are chimneys that have been lined or repointedwith cement. The weight of cement can bring down an oldchimney and lead to very costly repairs. Repointing mortarwith the correct lime mortar is essential and should not in-crease the expense. Hire a mason who understands the im-portance of matching the mortar to the old brick.

Build new wings “with Nantucket in mind.” Design anynew addition so it is fully compatible with the main core anddoes not overwhelm it. Oversized additions can negativelyaffect the streetscape. Read Building With Nantucket in Mind, the architectural design guidelines produced by the Nan-tucket Historic District Commission.

Complete maintenance on a regular basis. Routinemaintenance, such as proper paint preparation, will helpminimize rot and the need for costly repairs. Maintenanceon Nantucket is especially important because of the sea airand damp winters. Address suspected water problems orother issues early to minimize damage.

Nantucket Preservation Trust was founded in 1997 with amission to protect the island’s historic sense of place. Theirwork focuses on the built environment, including the island’s ir-replaceable historic architecture, streetscapes, and gardens.Michael May has served as the organization’s executive directorsince 2006. For more about the NPT, visit nantucketpreserva-tion.org or stop by their office on the 3rd floor at 55 Main Street.

Did you ever spend a pleasant summer day just walk-ing around Nantucket admiring window boxes? Therearen’t many other places where you can do just that. Weare fortunate that our climate lends itself so beautifully togrowing flowers, and the culture of the island practicallydictates that we adorn our homes with them. Homeownerswith little or no yard can still embrace gardening by givinga bit of window dressing to the outside of their homes.Flowering window boxes are far more prominent in sum-mer than during the off-season, but many homeownersembrace their beauty all year-round. Window boxes canreflect the character of the house or the neighborhood orthe personality and preferences of the person planting. They add personality to the house, and they certainly offera good deal of curb appeal.

Creative skills come in handy but are not a require-ment for planning and planting window boxes. You needto know what you like in terms of color. You also need toknow how much sun, shade, and wind your boxes will get.If you’ve never planted and maintained window boxes, beaware right up front that most of them do require mainte-nance, though the amount will vary by which plants youchoose. Even more important is the fact that all of themneed water. All of them. The number one reason that win-dow boxes fail to thrive is lack of water. Plants in windowboxes dry out much faster than plants in the ground. It’snot enough to moisten the top of the soil when the box isdry. Water thoroughly until it runs out the holes in the bot-tom. There is very little danger of overwatering windowboxes. That being said, be sure your window boxes havegood drainage (holes in the bottom) and are protected fromexcess roof runoff—if they are not protected, they will getsmashed during a heavy rain. The type of box you choosedoesn’t matter so much as the plants you select and thecare you give them through the growing season. Use fresh, rich potting soil each year, and add time-release fertilizeraccording to package directions at planting time, then feedwith a liquid fertilizer at half-strength every week or so be-ginning about a month after planting.

Knowing the exposure of your window boxes will go along way in ensuring success with your boxes. If you havea full southern exposure, be sure to choose plants that arelabeled “Full Sun.” Even with our ever-present seabreezes, there can be punishing heat in a southern expo-sure. Putting shade plants in those conditions is asking fortrouble. Full sun plants will require more watering as well. The definitions and verbiage used on plant labels can be alittle fuzzy, so you should consider them more like guide-lines. A plant labeled “Full Sun” will be most suited to tol-erate a southern exposure. If you have a spot that gets atleast six hours of full sun daily, choose a plant labeled thatway.

“Partial sun” and “partial shade” are often used inter-changeably. A plant labeled like this needs 3-6 hours ofdirect sun per day; however, being shaded in the morningis not the same as being shaded from the scorching after-noon sun. “Partial sun” usually implies that the plant needsmore sun and is more heat tolerant. “Partial shade” impliesthat the plant should be protected from the sun during theafternoon. “Shade” plants like to live the north side of ahouse or on a covered porch. Dappled shade, like under atree, is a great place for “partial shade” plants. More plants

tolerate dappled shade than can live in really deep shade. It’s important to keep track of light levels from springthrough fall, as an area that is dappled sun in April may befull shade in July. Regardless of a plant’s label, the amountof sun it needs or will tolerate varies with the strength ofthe sun and on how much you water.

So let’s talk about choosing plants. Several years ago, some marketer came up with a catch phrase about how todo this…use Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers they said. Andit stuck. The concept is sound so if you need inspiration, think about planting with this method. Thrillers are thestars: the big, attention-getting plants. They are usually talland upright with some outstanding quality like bright col-ors or textured foliage, an interesting shape or strikingflowers. An important element of the thriller is that it re-main interesting all season long. Thrillers work best inwindow boxes where they are the tallest plant. I also con-sider the thriller to be the starting point in a design. In awindow box, the thriller goes either in the center or alongthe back, and the other elements are built around it. Con-sider grasses like Hakone, about a foot tall, with yellow-and green-striped blades, or purple fountain grass or pa-pyrus. Flowering annuals like Angelonia, Dahlias, NewGuinea Impatiens, Salvias, and Gaura all work well.

Fillers add mass and get planted right in front of or di-rectly to the sides of the thriller. You may want to use morefinely textured plants that surround and can weavethrough the thriller. Fillers, well, fill in the composition.Choose a plant with a different texture or a complementingcolor as a counterpoint. Or if you are planting a mono-chrome box (all one color) try using a plant with blooms of

the same color, but are less saturated than the thriller.Fillers usually are mounding and that helps them fill inempty spots. Side benefit…if you have a tall thriller thatloses leaves at the bottom of the stem, the filler covers thatup!

The main role of a spiller is to trail over the edge of thewindow box. You may choose to have several across thewidth of the box or just have one in the middle, or youcould put one at each end. This can be an effective look ifthe boxes are not displayed end to end. Spillers soften theedges and sometimes look like a waterfall flowing towardsthe ground. Some great choices of spillers are Bacopa,Lobularia, trailing Verbena, perennial Lamium, and potatovine. It should be noted that certain plants can fall into ei-ther the thriller or spiller category, depending on what theyare planted with.

In addition to color and exposure, it’s helpful to con-sider some general design elements like simplicity, bal-ance, height of boxes, repetition, color, and style before youbegin. If you have a lot of windows, and want a box onevery window, keep it simple. If there are too many tex-tures or colors going on and there are eight boxes on twofloors, the appearance will seem jumbled. With multipleboxes, try to stick to a maximum of three types of plants. If you are planting boxes on the upper level of your house,it will need to look bigger. Fine foliage and airy flowerslike those on Euphorbia are great up close, but the effectwill be lost if you put them way up on the second floor.Boldly colored petunias or Divine impatiens may be a bet-

ter choice when viewing your boxes from a distance. Are you a fan of the traditional look? In the sun you

can’t go wrong with geraniums, petunias, and ivy or vinca. Those are simple, easy to care for, and will bloom all sum-mer. If you like more of a contemporary look, think aboutusing just one type of plant, like a short grass or all petu-nias or choose all plants that grow to the same height.Straight lines give a clean look.

Symmetry is important no matter what style you aregoing for. A large clump of color will look great at one endof your deck or in the corner of a patio, but a window boxplanted like that will look lop-sided. Repetition in a con-versation is tiresome but in a cluster of window boxes it isnecessary! If you are planting two or three boxes on thesame level, they should be planted alike. If it is one verylong box it should be symmetrical, end-to-end.

Knowing how much effort you are willing to put forthin maintaining boxes will also help you decide what toplant. Many varieties introduced lately are self-cleaning— that is, they drop their blooms that have gone by and re-place them with fresh blooms on a constant basis. Water, fertilizer, and the occasional trim are all that are required. If you have some boxes in the shade, foliage is often a goodchoice along with a shade-loving flowering annual. My all-time favorite shade box is colorful tuberous begonias (theycome in lots of colors) mixed with Japanese Painted Fernand Spider Plant. It blooms all summer, the foliage has twodifferent textures, and they all require virtually zero main-tenance. If you want a very low-maintenance box for a full

sun spot, try using all succulents like Sempervivums, Se-dums, and Escheverias. All kinds of textures, heights, shapes, and colors are available in garden centers, and theyare becoming more popular as container and window box

p l a n t s .They mixjust like an-nuals, andthey oftenbloom withinterestingspikes oflong-lastingf l o w e r s .S o m es p r e a d ,some hang,and somestand uptall. You canmix andmatch forw i n d o wboxes thatwill causepassers-byto stop andsay WOW!

Perhaps

of greatest value when considering the use of succulentsis their drought tolerance. Don’t be fooled into thinkingthat this means they don’t need water, though. While suc-culent’s foliage is adapted to hold water during water stresssituations, this advantage will only help for a while. Theydo need water, but perhaps only half as much as floweringannuals. Succulents will often throw interesting stalks offlowers as the season goes on, and when the nights beginto get cooler, their colors will deepen and get even moreinteresting.

Deciding how many plants to put in each window boxwill depend on a couple things. If you are late to the gameand are planting in June or July, you’ll want to stuff it fullso it looks filled in immediately. If you plan ahead andplant in May, you may be able to get away with using fewerplants. They will fill in over time. Also read the labels oneach plant. The information is there so you know howwide the plant will grow. Will it spread? Does it grow up-right? The physical attributes of each plant will help youfigure out how many plants you will need. Garden centerstaff always have great planting tips too.

One of the great things about planting window boxesis that you can experiment a little each year. You may findsome combination that you want to plant every year, butmore than likely you will want to try out some new vari-eties. Plant breeders are constantly improving old vari-eties so they bloom longer or better, and coming up withnew ones to try. With a little creative effort and a modestamount of attention and care, you can have stunning win-dow boxes each year.

Spring is a festive time on Nantucket Island, with atleast one special three- to five-day event every month dur-ing April, May, and June.

The fun begins with the annual Nantucket DaffodilFestival, held this year the weekend of April 29, 30, andMay 1. Now in its 42nd year, this celebration of springbrings thousands to our island for parades, picnics, livemusic, a scavenger hunt, art openings, wine tastings, a 5krun, and the magnificent Daffodil Show by the NantucketGarden Club.

What has evolved into three days of events began in1974, when Jean MacAusland, Nantucket summer residentand then publisher of Gourmet magazine, persuaded theNantucket Garden Club to invite the American Daffodil So-ciety to sponsor a daffodil show on Nantucket.

MacAusland and the Garden Club set a goal to plantmore than one million daffodil bulbs. The first planting inthe autumn of 1974, took place along Milestone Road. Many of the bulbs planted that first year did not survivebecause they had been planted in a straight line too closeto the road. They were mowed down before the leaves hada chance to store enough food for the winter. The nextplanting was done in random clusters farther from theroadbed.

This “drift planting” protected the plants and gavethem a more natural look. Year after year the Garden Clubadded thousands of bulbs, slowly realizing their goal. Inthe early 1980s, Jean MacAusland ordered eight tons ofbulbs to be shipped here directly from the Netherlands. The Garden Club recruited island landscapers to take overthe planting. Using a power drill, they set out 100,000 moredaffodil bulbs along Milestone Road.

Island residents embraced the idea with enthusiasm. Many began to join in—business people donated materials, and individuals helped with the planting. Everyone whoparticipated in placing the bulbs along Polpis Road set flagsover the spots where they had set theirs, so no one wouldaccidently dig up a daffodil while trying to plant another.

Across the island, the bulbs have naturalized over theyears to well over 3 million daffodils that bloom betweenearly April through May every year.

In January of 1978, to add to the festivities of DaffodilWeekend, MacAusland and H. Flint Ranney planned thefirst parade of classic cars, ending the procession with atailgate picnic in Siasconset. In that first year, 19 vintageautos participated. Among them were Mike Todd’s 1920Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, Hamilton Heard’s 1924 GrahamBrothers Dodge firetruck, Jean MacAusland’s flower-be-decked 1966 Van Dan Plas Rolls Royce, and Ranney’s 1927American LaFrance ladder truck. This parade now in-cludes up to 80 classic cars and motorcycles.

In 1980, the Antique and Classic Car Parade began stop-ping briefly on Main Street to allow public viewing and pho-tographing. Also that year, the Nantucket Island Chamber ofCommerce, who has been organizing the festival for morethan 20 years, began adding additional downtown events.

This year the fun begins on Friday, April 29, with aDaffodil Festival Scavenger Hunt, a window decoratingcontest, and an evening reception at the Artists Associa-tion’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Wash-ington Street.

On Saturday morning, April 30, people gather at Chil-dren’s Beach for the Daffy Hat Parade and the Children’sParade as the dozens of decorated antique cars arrive intown for viewing on Main Street before the Antique Car Pa-rade at noon. The tailgate picnic in Sconset begins at 1 pm,and for this year’s Daffodil Festival, the Chamber will alsohold a Children’s Beach Family Picnic from 1 to 3 pm,which they describe as a “mini-festival,” with live music, storytelling, balloon animals, and free rides for children inthe Nantucket Hotel’s antique fire truck.

The centerpiece of this spring festival is the Nan-tucket Garden Club’s Daffodil Flower Show, which opensto the public at 2 pm on Saturday, April 30 at Bartlett’sFarm. Free shuttle busses from town to the show and backwill be available on Saturday. Hundreds of staged daffodilsin a dizzying array of colors and sizes and varieties will beon display, all of them grown on Nantucket. The artistictheme of the 2016 show is Found on Nantucket, which willbe expressed in flower arrangements, tableaux, and pho-tographs. The Daffodil Show continues till 5 pm on Satur-day and reopens from 10 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday, May 1.

You can end this festive day with a special DaffodilDinner at the Farm. This four-course, family-style dinnerby the farm’s chef will be served at 6pm. Bartlett’s Farm

rewards of reading, writing, and literacy. The organizationseeks to present an annual quality program that honors na-tional, regional and local authors and the rich culture of thewritten word, ideas, and the imagination. It also adminis-ters an education program in the Nantucket schools whichincludes the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools program, the Nantucket Book Festival Young Writers Award, and theVisiting Authors program. These programs encourage stu-dents to find a platform of words and a love of reading tounderstand that while they may live on an island, there isno limit to their imagination.

The spotlight turns from books to movies as spring be-comes summer and the Nantucket Film Festival opens onFriday, June 17.

Twenty-one years ago, Jonathan and Jill Burkhartfounded the Nantucket Film Festival to promote awarenessand appreciation of screenwriting. This year, for six daysfrom June 22 to 27, screenwriters, actors, producers, agents, and fans will gather on Nantucket to see movies, watchpanel discussions, participate in late night storytelling, andattend special screenings. Many popular and award-win-ning films had early showings at the Nantucket Film Fes-tival, including The Full Monty, Next Stop Wonderland,Mostly Martha, Whale Rider, Winter’s Bone, Beasts of theSouthern Wild, Boyhood, and Inside Out.

NFF’s In Their Shoes...® sessions provide in-depth andrevealing glimpses into the work of major screenwriters, actors, and other film artists during hour-long conversa-tions, and have featured Robin Wright, Glenn Close, JimCarrey, and Meg Ryan. Another festival favorite is Morn-ing Coffee With…®, which offers chances to hear workingtales from the filmmakers’ perspectives.

The Nantucket Film Festival was founded by Jill andJonathan Burkhart in 1996. At the time, the Burkharts livedon the island year-round and felt it was the perfect placeto share their love of movies and the island communitywith a film festival. They distinguished the Nantucket FilmFestival by emphasizing the role of screenwriters in film, and every year NFF hosts a Screenwriter Tribute to honorone. Mystelle Brabbée now serves as the Executive Direc-tor and continues the NFF mission to promote culturalawareness and appreciation of the art of screenwriting inthe world of cinema.

In keeping with the Nantucket Film Festival’s missionof highlighting screenwriters, NFF now offers free educa-tional opportunities for Nantucket students. The Teen Viewon NFF focuses on empowering Nantucket teens by teach-ing screenwriting and filmmaking skills, with year-roundWriting Labs and the week-long Filmmaking Program dur-ing the week of the Film Festival, where students presenttheir short film projects to the island community.

They also host a competition to recognize the bestemerging screenplays and, in collaboration with TheScreenwriters Colony, NFF has launched a new writersprogram featuring an immersive residency with mentorson Nantucket.

Tickets to the 2016 Film Festival screenings and eventsare available at NantucketFilmFestival.org.

For up-to-date details on each of these festivals, visittheir websites and check the events calendar onNantucket.net.

Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings andwinner of the 2015 Man Booker Prize, will present at this year’sNantucket Book Festival.

Chris Matthews interviewed Robin Wright and Beau Willimon ofHouse of Cards for this NFF 2015 In Their Shoes...® session.

For more than sixty years, the Nantucket Garden Clubhas helped to nurture and cultivate beauty on our islandin ways that may surprise many residents. Most know ofthe Garden Club’s role in the annual Daffodil Festival, andmany have attended their Green Thumb Show and theirAugust House Tour. In addition to these fun public events, members of the Nantucket Garden Club have long givenhands-on and funding support to nearly every aspect ofNantucket’s natural beauty.

Organized in 1953 by 34 dedicated year-round andsummer residents who wanted to promote knowledge ofand love for gardening, the club has grown to include 125members today. In 1954, the Nantucket Garden Club be-came a member of The Garden Club of America, a nation-wide organization located in communities in all 50 states.

Just two years after they started the club, in 1955, mem-bers hosted their first House Tour, welcoming the publicinto their homes and gardens to raise money for club en-deavors. Sixty-two years later, this popular tour continuesto offer an opportunity to peek into many historic and newhomes and gardens on Nantucket. Each year a differentneighborhood is selected...from 'Sconset to Monomoy toBrant Point. Garden Club members provide flowerarrangements to compliment the rooms in each home. This year, their House Tour will be held on August 10 from11 am to 4 pm, rain or shine, and will feature historichomes on Orange Street.

The revenue from this major event supports GardenClub community projects that include conservation proj-ects, renewable $5,000 scholarships for local students, clubeducational programs, and grants to local organizations in-cluding the Nantucket Land Council, the MassachusettsAudubon Society, the Nantucket Lighthouse School, andthe Maria Mitchell Association, and many others.

In 2004, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary witha $100,000 package of grants to Nantucket organizations. In 2008, it pledged $50,000 toward the restoration and re-location of the 150 year-old Sankaty Head Lighthouse. Andin 2011, it donated $20,000 to the Nantucket ConservationFoundation toward purchase of the 110-acre University ofMassachusetts Field Station on Polpis Road, a year-roundfacility used for education, research, and community serv-ice programs on Nantucket.

In addition to financial assistance to our island com-munity, the Nantucket Garden Club and its members havetaken many steps to keep Nantucket's public places attrac-tive and well-maintained.

In the 1960s and 70s, the club established and embel-lished the early gardens at the Nantucket Airport withtrees, planting, and benches. In 1968, the airport receiveda Federal Aviation Administration award for one of thecountry's most beautiful airport gardens.

Nantucket's Cottage Hospital has received landscaping

help from the club periodically since the 1950s. Most re-cently, they provided a bench at the hospital's front en-trance.

Over the years, the club has provided numerous plantsand trees to landscape the property of the Atheneum, ourhistoric town library. In the early 1990s, they donated$50,000 to rebuild the Atheneum's adjoining garden fol-lowing a major renovation of the building. A new masterplan for the garden was developed in 2006 with a $3,500Garden Club donation.

The club's relationship with the historic garden atHadwen House on Main Street is especially cherished. Inthe mid-1970s, they funded construction of a period 1850sstyle garden behind the mansion. The club continues tooversee the garden's upkeep and to purchase appropriateplantings for this beautiful site that is open to the public.

Nantucket's Oldest House similarly benefits from long-standing Garden Club support reaching back to the mid-1960s. The club financed a landscaping plan, plantings, fencing, and a cobbled roadway. Subsequent funding in-cluded support for restoration work after a fire in 1988.

Most recently, the club funded plants for the historicallyaccurate kitchen garden adjacent to the Oldest House, aswell as a new perennial garden.

Nantucket schools have also received Garden Club do-nations to improve the surrounding landscape. They re-cently donated $5,000 for equipment to be used bystudents in maintaining gardens established in partner-ship with the school system and Sustainable Nantucket, aNantucket non-profit organization.

Nantucket is dotted with trees planted with financialhelp from the club. These include shade trees along JettiesBeach Road, at the Lightship Basket Museum, and border-ing Broad Street leading to the ferry dock. The club do-nated $10,000 to replace trees destroyed by a fiercehurricane that hit in 1991.

Over the years, residences and facilities for Nan-tucket's senior citizens—Landmark House, Our IslandHome, the Homestead, Saltmarsh Center, and SherburneCommons—have all received club funds for landscapingpurposes, including walking paths and special theme gar-dens. The club has long supported modest requests fromthe 40-plot Nantucket Community Garden on HummockPond Road for gardening tools and other supplies. Severaltimes a year, club members can be seen adorning the his-toric fountain in the middle of Main Street.

And, of course, there are the daffodils. In addition tostarting Nantucket’s annual Daffodil Festival with the Daf-fodil Show (approved by the American Daffodil Society),Garden Club members installed and help to maintain

plantings along the Fairgrounds Road Bike Path. In honorof the 25th Daffodil Flower Show, they completed theplantings along the Polpis Road Bike Path with daffodils;and, two years ago, in honor of the 40th Daffodil FlowerShow, the Garden Club planted about 15,000 bulbs alongthe newly completed Hummock Pond Road bike path lead-ing to Cisco.

For decades, the club has donated daffodil bulbs to is-land schoolchildren to encourage them to plant more ofthese beautiful harbingers of spring. The 7th grade scienceclass, under the direction of Irene Egan, helps with the la-beling and distribution of the bulbs, making this not onlyfun, but also a learning experience for the children.

Sixty-three years after its founding, the purpose of theNantucket Garden Club remains to promote better knowl-edge and love of gardening, plants, flowers, and horticul-ture, contribute to the beauty of Nantucket, and supportconservation initiatives that protect the island's fragile andhistoric environment.

“We are fortunate to have many talented, hard-workingmembers who contribute a great deal of time when theyare “on vacation,” explained club President MerrielouSymes. “It is a dedicated group of women... [who] feel theyare stewards of our beautiful island.”

Be sure to mark your calendars this season for the42nd Annual Community Daffodil Show on April 30 andMay 1, for the Art with Blooms Gallery Walk July 15-17, andfor the 62nd Annual House and Garden Tour on August 10.For more details about the Nantucket Garden Club, visittheir website at nantucketgardenclub.org.
