MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Council continues to deliver new programs and facilities. One key priority since becoming Mayor has been to make Fairfield City a better place for families and

provisions for infrastructure for the future.

Much has already been delivered and in 2015-16 there will be further rollouts of infrastructure and innovative technology for our City.

Last month, Fairfield City Open Libraries were the first in Australia to receive 3M’s Cloud Library, giving school students and residents access to all our libraries from the comfort of their lounge rooms. This is delivering on key issues and concerns raised by the community.

The Fairfield Youth and Community Centre is nearly complete and is one of the best facilities in South West Sydney – right next to the iconic Fairfield Adventure Park.

New infrastructure plans addressing lighting and CCTV upgrades in parks and school zone safety to name a few, are in the works.

We celebrate many festivals and are proud to be hosting the inaugural and biggest New Year’s Eve fireworks event in South West Sydney - Illuminate. Families can watch the fireworks from the family friendly site at Calmsley Hill City Farm.

These are just a few of the programs and infrastructure that Council is delivering to the community to make this great City of ours even better.

I hope you enjoy this issue of City Life.

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGYSydney is growing and Fairfield is part of that population growth. Rezoning accessible residential lands for higher residential densities is a State Government planning strategy. Precincts in Fairfield, Fairfield Heights, Fairfield East and Villawood have been proposed as areas for possible increase in residential densities to accommodate population growth because they are close to shops, public transport and parks.

Residents walking to railway stations, bus services, shops and businesses promotes healthier lifestyles and reduces car use. Villas, townhouses and apartments provide greater housing choice for a changing population.

A Planning Proposal is expected to be exhibited for comments in late 2015. All landowners will be advised of the public exhibition by letter, public notices will appear in the Fairfield Champion newspaper, and information will appear on Council’s website. Have your say!

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Taking libraries into your lounge roomWednesday 26 August marked the official launch of the Fairfield Open Libraries program, which will deliver on Council’s commitment to revolutionise the way our community accesses information and services in all Fairfield City libraries.

The State Library, neighbouring Council libraries and residents, including 105-year-old library stalwart Ted Wale, joined the Mayor and Councillors at the official launch of the program and were the first to experience modern technological advancements that support further access to education and services for our community.

Technological innovations have been introduced including free Wi-Fi, computer and iPad facilities, and Press Reader, which allows online access to 3,000 international newspapers and magazines from more than 100 countries in 60 languages.

In an Australian first, the 3M Cloud Library Discovery Terminals were launched. This is a unique, easy-to-use eBook lending system.

Discovery Terminals, available at all libraries, allow customers to browse the digital collection, as well as conduct normal borrowing services such as check out, holding and returning eBooks.

The 3M Cloud Library can be accessed with a smart phone or tablet application (app) and allows users to borrow eBooks from the app itself.

Readers can now explore and borrow eBooks from the library, their lounge room, office or on-the-go!

Visit Fairfield City Open Libraries for a whole new experience.

OPEN LIBRARIES

Come and celebrate Grandparents Day on Sunday 25 October at the Fairfield Adventure Park and the new Fairfield Youth and Community Centre for a free barbecue lunch and plenty of family friendly entertainment for people all ages.Council is excited to show appreciation to our City’s grandparents by hosting this inaugural event in Fairfield Park from 11am to 2pm. Come and try a piece of our giant cake, enjoy the musical entertainment and browse the stalls that will offer information for seniors and grandparents. There will also be a free barbecue with drinks and activities for the family, as well as the enjoyment of the Adventure Park.

Grandparents play a vital role in our society, not only as custodians of individual and cultural memories, but also as providers of care, love and guidance to their children and grandchildren.

Did you know that in 2011 about 937,000 Australian children received care from a grandparent on a regular basis? Grandparents Day recognises the irreplaceable role grandparents have in their families and in the wider community.

Fairfield City Council’s celebration of Grandparents Day will be an opportunity for families across the City to spend the day together and celebrate. The Adventure Park is the perfect venue because it provides plenty of entertainment for young and old.

You can be among the first to see and use the new Fairfield Youth and Community Centre, a multi-million dollar project that will be open to the general public on a drop-in basis on one Sunday each month. The first open day begins on Grandparents Day!

The state-of-the-art, 3,000 square metre Youth and Community Centre will provide facilities for all the family, including a large hall, indoor multi-sports courts, an outdoor basketball court, trampolines, a rock climbing wall, Wi-Fi access and versatile rooms to serve many purposes, from meetings through to hang out zones. Located next to Fairfield Adventure Park and Fairfield Leisure Centre, this creates a leisure precinct for families of Fairfield City. The centre will be open on Grandparents Day from 11am to 4pm.

THE CRESCENT PLAZAAn exciting Council project will soon turn a disused block of land on The Crescent, in Fairfield City Centre, into a modern, open space plaza able to support large and small events and activities.

Council has a long-term commitment to increasing the amount of open space within the Fairfield City Centre. The site of The Crescent Plaza was selected due to its position adjacent to the Fairfield Station Transport Interchange and directly across the road from The Crescent Park.

There are also a number of residential towers under construction along The Crescent and open space is required for the rapidly increasing number of new residents within the Fairfield City Centre.

Funding of $1.8 million has been allocated for the development.

The Plaza has been designed to include a Timeline Wall that will explore the history of Fairfield City through the story of the Fairfield City Centre, a Council digital information hub, urban arts projects and a Historical Ribbon ‘Flow’ sculpture that visually weaves its way though, up and across the Plaza in three dimensions.

Construction is expected to start in Feb-March 2016 and be completed July-August 2016.

WILSON ROAD RESERVECouncil park gets a makeover Wilson Road Reserve, Bonnyrigg is receiving a significant upgrade, resulting in a much improved community asset.

Approved for construction is a $300,000 car park, which features 36 spaces with two disabled spaces.

Other improvements to be completed this financial year include:

• A new playground, including 30m flying fox, seating, paths and landscaping - $360,000

• Outdoor gym equipment - $50,000

• Circuit walking path - $100,000

• Futsal sports courts with lighting and fencing - $140,000

• Off leash dog area of approximately 2000m2

Work starts on Local Roads PackageWork has started on a $13.6 million upgrade of three significant Cumberland Highway intersections and a 1.2km widening of Wetherill Street at Smithfield as part of the fully Australian Government funded $200 million Local Roads Package.

The package is part of the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and is assisting councils to deliver better roads around the western Sydney airport site.

Wetherill Street in Smithfield between Polding Street and Victoria Street will be widened from two to four lanes. The work will align Wetherill Street in the north and Wetherill Street in the south with The Horsley Drive at a new set of traffic lights to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection.

Three intersections along the Cumberland Highway - at John Street, St Johns Road and Hamilton Road – will also be upgraded. The intersection work will include right turn bays and longer turn bay lengths.

Visit www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/majorprojects for information about the progress of works in Wetherill Street and along the Cumberland Highway.

Spring has sprung and with it comes an invitation for all City residents to join Council’s annual Spring Environment Tour. The Spring Environment Tour aims to inform interested people about significant areas of Fairfield City that are undergoing environmental restoration. This year the tour will take in five sites – Avoca Road, Stimson’s Creek, the garbage compactor, Nalawala Community Nursery and Hawkesbury Street Rain Garden. The tour also provides an opportunity for stakeholders and land managers to increase their knowledge and awareness of local environmental issues.

Much of the environmental restoration work undertaken in Fairfield each year may go unnoticed. The tour provides an opportunity to see first-hand the results of numerous environmental projects Fairfield City Council and various volunteer community groups have completed. Our combined efforts aim to achieve environmentally sustainable land management practices in harmony with the urbanised landscape.

The tour is free of charge and will be held on Saturday 10 October 2015. A bus will depart Council’s Administration Centre at 86 Avoca Road Wakeley at 8.30am. The tour will conclude about 12.30pm.
