Het omstreden politiek potentieel van het verledenDe weergave van het verleden is nooit neutraal. Zeker tijdens periodes van ingrijpende maatschappelijke veranderingen krijgt het verleden een om-streden politiek potentieel. Nooit was dit meer het geval in België dan rond 1800, tijdens de turbulente overgangsjaren van het ancien régime naar de moderne tijd. In maatschappelijke debatten en politieke conflicten kwamen uiteenlopende visies op de geschiedenis lijnrecht tegenover elkaar te staan. Dit boek onderzoekt de manier waarop de bezettende Franse overheid zich van het verleden bediende in haar communicatie met de Belgische bevolking. Van de revolutionaire beginperiode tot het meer traditionalis-tische bewind van Napoleon: telkens gebruikten overheidsfunctionarissen het verleden om een politieke boodschap te verspreiden. Onhoudbaar verleden toont aan dat de manier waarop ze dat deden vaak verrassend pragmatisch was. De politieke realiteit tijdens deze belangrijke maar weinig bestudeerde periode uit de Belgische geschiedenis komt daarmee in een heel nieuw licht te staan.

Het karikaturale beeld van de losbandige middeleeuwse geestelijken herbekekenHet 15de-eeuwse Brugge was een middeleeuwse grootstad. In deze metro-pool floreerden luxenijverheden, internationale handel en maakte het Bourgondische hof grote sier. Brugge telde in deze periode enkele honder-den geestelijken: kanunniken en pastoors, maar ook kapelanen en talrijke zangers. Onder hen vinden we enkele van de meest vooraanstaande com-ponisten, zangers, ambte naren en professoren van de lage landen terug, o.a. Gilles Binchois, Gilles Joye, Guillaume Dufay en Antoine Haneron. De Brugse kanunnik Joris Vander Paelen werd door Jan Van Eyck als een devoot man afgebeeld, maar sommige kronieken schetsen een ander beeld van de laatmiddeleeuwse clerus: ‘Zijn het dan allemaal hebzuchtige en eerzuch-tige dieven, hoogmoedige en wellustige hoerenlopers en maagdenonteer-ders?’ In De papen van Brugge wordt de levenswandel van niet minder dan 1298 seculiere geestelijken onderzocht. Het karikaturale beeld van de hypo-criete, geile, ijdele of vraatzuchtige pastoor wordt door Hendrik Callewier aan de hand van rijke archiefbronnen herbekeken en bijgesteld.

Portrait of the Exceptional Burgundian household of the Spanish Habsburg kingsCourts and royal households played a crucial role in the development of the political organization of early modern monarchies. The Duchy of Bur-gundy was the first to establish a highly sophisticated household that ap-proximated perfection at the organizational level, and for this reason was recognised by contemporary monarchies. Philip I introduced this so called ‘Burgundian house hold’ at the court of Castile. Soon it managed to rein-force its preeminence over other less developed households of the Spanish monarchy, such as those of Aragon and Castile, and it became the sole household of the Universal Monarchy. This book presents a wide-ranging and in depth portrait of the exceptional Burgundian household of the Spanish Habsburg kings, and reinterprets its role at the heart of the Spanish monarchy. Habsburg networking in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuriesThis volume focuses on the various Habsburg courts and households among the two branches of the dynasty that arose following the division of the territories originally held by Charles V. The authors trace the con-nections between these courtly communities regardless of their standing or composition, exposing the underlying network they formed. By cutting across the traditional division in the historiography between the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs and also examining the roles played by the courts and households of lesser known members of the dynasty, this volume determines to what degree the organization followed a par-ticular model and to what extent individuals were able to move between courts in pursuit of career opportunities and advancement.

The mystical relationship between Meister Eckhart and Jan van RuusbroecIn this thorough textual, historical, and doctrinal study the author seeks to clarify the relationship between two prominent mystics of the four-teenth century: Meister Eckhart, the German Dominican, and Jan van Ruus-broec, the Brabantine Augustinian. Special attention is paid to Ruusbroec’s criticism of mystical tenets circulating in Brabant at that time which were both textually and doctrinally related to Eckhart’s condemned prop-ositions in the papal bull In agro dominico. This fact implies that Ruusbroec was confronted with the impact of the condemnation of Eckhart’s doc-trines on the people in Brabant. Situating Ruusbroec’s life and works with-in the aftermath of Eckhart’s arrival, the author elucidates Ruusbroec’s position regarding the relevant mystical themes in the later Middle Ages, and follows a process of critical inheritance of mystical tradition from Eckhart to Ruusbroec. The importance of Bartholomew’s oeuvre and cultural life under the reign of ManfredAn important chapter in the rediscovery of Aristotle in the Middle Ages is the oeuvre of Bartholomew of Messina (Bartholomaeus de Messana), a translator at the court of Manfred, King of Sicily (1258–1266). However, the impact of both Bartholomew and Manfred on the cultural and intel-lectual life of their time remains understudied, especially in comparison to the attention received by the translator’s contemporary, William of Moerbeke, and by the King’s father, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. This volume contributes to the exploration of this field of research in a two-fold way. It discusses the nature and importance of Bartholomew’s oeuvre (and especially his translations of Aristotle). Multiculturalism in present-day EuropeHow to understand Europe’s post-migrant Islam on the one hand and in-digenous, anti-Islamic movements on the other? What impact will religion have on the European secular world and its regulation? How do social and economic transitions on a transnational scale challenge ethnic and reli-gious identifications? These questions are at the very heart of the debate on multiculturalism in present-day Europe and are addressed by the authors in this book. Through the lens of post-migrant societies, manifestations of identity appear in plu-ralized, fragmented, and deterritorialized forms. This new European multi-culturalism calls into question the nature of boundaries between various ethnic-religious groups, as well as the demarcation lines within ethnic-reli-gious communities. Although the contributions in this volume focus on Islam, ample attention is also paid to Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism. The authors present empirical data from cases in Turkey, Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and Belgium, and sharpen the perspectives on the religious-ethnic manifestations of identity in the transnational context of 21st-century Europe.

About the seriesStudies in European Comics and Graphic Novels presents state-of-the-art contributions on comics and graphic novels. The series publishes research on European comics and graphic novels and aims at stimulating scholar-ship on European BDs. It includes titles from scholars working in different disciplines, such as history, literary criticism, literary theory, art history, and visual studies. Typical themes to be addressed will comprise Europe-an graphic novels and comics in historical context; gender and other so-cial identity analysis; theorizations; and detailed case studies or wider surveys. The series publishes monographs and collections for university-level researchers and ambitions to advance knowledge of this still rela-tively under-discussed subject.All volumes will be published in English, but the comics and graphic novels under investigation will be of any European language and from any Euro-pean culture. The first monograph covering Dibbets’s iconic photographic oeuvreDutchman Jan Dibbets (b. 1941) is one of the principal artists to have intro-duced photography into the plastic arts, and this as early as the 1960s. At a time when photography has massively invaded contemporary art institu-tions – not without generating confusion and excess – it is not easy to evaluate the full radicality of Dibbets’s approach. This radicalism has noth-ing to do with modernist overkill. Dibbets did not merely go further than others; rather, he simply went elsewhere. Beginning in 1967, he embarked on a long-range project which, as we advance into the 21st century, he seems not to have abandoned: the ‘pictorializing’ of photography.Jan Dibbets is one of the few artists of his generation and reputation not to have seen his oeuvre accorded full monographic coverage. Ideological heterogeneity in mass plays in Flanders and the NetherlandsIn many European countries mass theatre was a widespread expression of ‘community art’ which became increasingly popular shortly before the First World War. From Max Reinhardt’s lavish open-air spectacles to socia list workers’ Laienspiel (lay theatre), theatre visionaries focused on ever larger groups for entertainment as well as political agitation.Despite wide research on the Soviet and German cases, examples from the Low Countries have hardly been examined. However, mass plays in Flanders and the Netherlands had a distinctive character, displaying an ideological heterogeneity not seen elsewhere. Mass Theatre in Inter-War Europe studies this peculiar phenomenon of the Low Countries in its Euro-pean context and sheds light on the broader framework of mass move-ments in the inter-war period.

Twintigste bundel van het interfacultair college Lessen voor de 21ste eeuwTerugblikken helpt ons beter begrijpen waarom we zorg dragen voor wat we vandaag belangrijk vinden. Dit jaar herdenken we de Groote Oorlog die honderd jaar geleden begon, het verdrag van Versailles dat al de kiem van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bevatte en het ontstaan, vijfenzestig jaar geleden, van het genocideverdrag. Vandaag staat de Europese samenwer-king die de ambitie had om de oude conflicten definitief op te heffen onder druk. Is de geschiedenis ertoe veroordeeld zich te herhalen of kun-nen we uit onze fouten leren? Is Hegels vooruitgangsgeloof gerechtvaar-digd of moeten we ons verzoenen met een tragischer perspectief op de geschiedenis? Hoe kaderen onze particuliere historische visies trouwens binnen het ruimere perspectief op het ontstaan van onze kosmos? Als mensen realiseren we ons niet alleen in confrontatie met het verleden, maar ook door te anticiperen op wat nog niet is, maar kan zijn. Vaak reikt de wetenschap ons daartoe de middelen aan. Computers die zelfstandig worden, chips die steeds kleiner en sneller zijn, of technologische innova-ties in de geneeskunde: het zijn maar enkele voorbeelden van ontwikke-lingen die onze toekomst mee vorm zullen geven.
