From the President’s Desk

Come Join Us at the NCALC Convention! What a great, productive time was had for our May Board meeting in Asheville. The weather was spectacular, the envi-ronment unique, and the fellowship meaningful. In addition to the board meeting itself, we had a roundtable discussion led by George Self, President of Apple Advertising, that was very enlightening. My big take away was that the purpose of social media is not to blatantly promote your company, its specials or coupons, but to use it as a vehicle to build a relationship

NCALCBusiness Partners

NCALC depends heavily on all of our Associate Mem-bers in conducting our work to promote and support the Fabricare Industry in North Carolina.

Business Partners are those Associate Members who have gone well beyond the basic affiliation of member-ship, to invest financially in our activities.

We extend a special thanks to these NCALC Business Partners who have helped to financially underwrite the activities of NCALC through their significant financial support (e.g. sponsorships, advertising, and other con-tributions.)

with the market you serve. Creativity and consistency are key components to make it successful. On Saturday we arranged for a brewery tour of the craft brewer, Highland Brewery, and had an incredible lunch and dinner on the town.

Next up is the Annual Convention and I am excited about what has been planned so far! It is going to be held in Raleigh on October 25th and 26th at the Embassy Suites in Brier Creek. We will have a roundtable discussion on the latest in equipment technology on Friday before dinner, 4 educational sessions on Saturday morning, a host of activities to choose from for Saturday afternoon and of course, excellent fellowship Friday and Saturday night.

The Convention is designed to broaden our members’ exposure to our industry through the educational sessions, fellowship amongst our members and vendor networking events. By simply making the investment to participate, you can take a great deal of pertinent information back to your plants and stores to solve many of those vexing issues and make your businesses more successful.

We hope you will join us and we look forward to seeing you!

For more than 20 years, the Dry-Clean-ing Solvent Cleanup Act Program team has worked to identify and cleanup 427 contaminated dry-cleaning sites in North Carolina. This closure marked a milestone – site #100 closed out with no further action! Thanks to the NC DSCA Program Staff for their hard work and for sharing these photos. The voluntary DSCA program, supported by the NC Association of Launderers and Cleaners, pays for 98% of cleanup costs.

Over the course of the project, the pro-gram installed/sampled 26 monitoring wells to sample groundwater. Susan Smith Johnson, daughter of Louise “Sunny” Smith Houchins, has reported that her mother passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at age 97. Mrs. Houchins, who had remarried some 20 years ago, had been living in Cary, North Carolina with her daughter Susan.

During the 1970s, Sunny worked with her husband and then NCALC Executive Director, Wynne Smith, as an adminis-trator and she became intimately famil-iar with the business and members of the association. Their daughters Susan Smith Johnson and Carol Smith Boykins also actively helped with the association work during that time. Susan said they were so involved in the association, that she felt they probably still had perc flow-ing in her veins. Susan said her dad had given her mom the nickname “Sunny” reflecting on her sunny disposition and smile; and it stuck. When Wynne passed about 1977, Sunny continued to support the association for several years into the mid-1980s.

Past President Mack Davis recalled that for most of Sunny’s working years, the association office was in a small office strip in Cary across from Melba’s

Louise “Sunny” Smith HouchinsRestaurant. The Bulletin was printed in house and the technologies included mimeograph machines, printing press and type, and later high speed copiers. The whole back room of the Association office was filled with printing supplies and antique irons that were donated by a long term member. She drove from their home in Cary to Raleigh when the asso-ciation bought an office condominium off Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.

Davis remembered Sunny fondly, say-ing “She did an excellent job of event

planning for both the board meetings and also the annual conventions. She had good relationships with members and other association executives as well as NID (National Institute of Drycleaners; which it later became when the National Drycleaners merged with the laundry association.

Sunny was a tall lady with a big heart. Everyone loved Sunny and enjoyed talking with her because she was so genuinely interested in them. I am glad to have known and worked with Sunny!”
