Like the piñon tree, members of the Navajo Nation gather resources to survive an increasingly precarious water supply. Diné artist Emma Robbins has gathered symbols of endurance for this design; a sáanii (maternal grandmother) scarf crossed by traditional sash belts used in ceremonies and childbirth. At the center, a young woman's bracelet of silver is set with turquoise, a stone formed by rare rains flowing through arid layers of rock. A portion of blanket sales will support DigDeep’s Navajo Water Project. Napped.

LOS LUNASColorful bands of multi-directional arrows symbolize the routes of people who made petroglyphs—carvings on rock walls—to record their specific cultures and journeys through the area now known as Los Lunas. This small New Mexico town is neighbor to Laguna Pueblo, the Rio Grande Valley, and Hidden Mountain. The area’s abundant petroglyphs include figures seen nowhere else in the Americas. The carvings on Pueblo land are protected and treasured as centuries-old messages from the past. Unnapped.

Emma Robbins (Diné) is an artist, community organizer, and Executive Director of the Navajo Water Project, part of the human rights nonprofit DigDeep Water. She completed her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art History in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is also an Aspen Institute Healthy Communities Fellow. Through her artwork, Robbins strives to raise awareness of Native issues through art that uses found materials gathered on her trips across the United States and abroad.

PINTO MOUNTAINSJust north of Joshua Tree National Park, rugged peaks rise sharply from the Pinto Basin to form the Pinto Mountains Wilderness. This harsh but beautiful landscape holds unusual animals that have adapted to the dry climate, like the American badger, leaf-nosed bat, and desert tortoise. In this design, the peaks of the Pinto Mountains are interspersed with chaparral bushes. Flying shapes signify the 250 species of birds traveling through the area on their many migratory paths.

SISKIYOUSiskiyou is said to be Chinook Jargon for a bob-tailed horse, lost on a trip over this 100-mile mountain range on the Oregon/California border.
