WELCOMESpring is less than 45 days away and time is going to fly!

Spring gives way to learning new things and experiences. We have archery, Children’s Fair, and gymnastics that are always fun to try.

The Nobles Senior Advisory Committee has planned another informative Living Your Best Life event on Wednesday, May 6. The focus this year is the concern about mental health with the growing concerns about the demands of farming in today’s agriculture. Our keynote speaker is Ted Matthews, who is a mental health practitioner with over 30 years of experience in counseling in rural areas. Informational booths, door prizes, entertainment and a great meal provided by On Q BBQ of Round Lake help set the stage for a great event.

Our day trips have been very successful. We have planned a trip this spring to Meredith Willson’s Music Man at Chanhassen, our annual trip to a MN Twins game, and The Minnesota State Fair in the coming months. If you are wanting to go, register early!

The spring catalog has many trusted organizations bringing great activities and events to the Worthington area! We look forward to seeing you in a class or activity soon.

Thank you for your support!Anne FoleyEnrichment Programs Coordinator

IRWorthington District 518EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENINGDo you have a child that is 2-5 years old? Has your child been to early childhood screening? If not, read on... Minnesota State Law requires that children age 3 1/2 - 4 years participate in a developmental early childhood screening. This screening is free. The purpose of the screening is to identify children who may benefit from district and community resources that are available to help in their development. The screening will consist of the following components: fine/gross motor skills, language development, concepts, height/weight, vision, hearing, review of child’s health history, and immunization record (these are not substitutes for comprehensive exams). District 518 will be sending out letters of invitation to children who are in the appropriate age range. If your child is 4 years of age and has not been screened or if you would like to check if your child is listed on our census, contact Tara Thompson, Early Childhood Screening Coordinator at (507) 727-1207 for more information. Early Childhood Screening Dates for this school year are:

February 18, 2020 | May 5, 2020 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Held at West Learning Center

Keynote Speaker - Ted Matthews

Your $12.00 early bird fee will allow you to join in multiple breakout sessions, visit local business and agency booths, food, and FUN. We have an incredible line up of local experts that will share information on a variety of topics to help you live your

best life. For professionals that need CEU’s, up to 4 credit hours are available to earn at this event. Even if you come late, come join us!

Ted Matthews is a mental health practitioner with over 30 years of experience in counseling in rural areas. His focus for the past 2 decades has been farmer mental health support. He has been the director of mental health services during 5 natural disasters. Matthews provides outreach training and public speaking related to farm stressors, nation wide. He also has extensive counseling experience in the areas of PTSD, crisis intervention, family issues, suicidology and domestic abuse. Featured on the Huffington Post, MPRNews, CNN, AgriNews, Successful Farming, Prairie Farmer and many others, Ted offers his expertise to help the general population to better understand the farming culture.

In 1998, Matthews began working with the Mental Health Outreach Program, which is operated through the Farm Business Management program within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The fundamental goal of the Mental Health Outreach Program is to help rural people address the various emotional issues arising from a rural economy experiencing rapid change and the effects of increasing farm consolidation on both farmer and non-farmer alike.

This program is effective because a diagnosis of mental illness is not a prerequisite and no additional reimbursement for services is required. As the demands of farming continue to increase, the necessity for addressing rural mental health needs becomes more acute. Matthews continues to work in a plethora of areas from crisis intervention to helping farmers relate to their families and workers to better utilize their resources.

District 518 Residents,

Independent School District 518 is preparing to expand in the Spring of 2020 with several construction projects that will serve our students and our community. With one major project completed and three more on the way, District 518 is looking to continue with its commitment to excellence for students.

The new Learning Center has been completed and students began attending classes in the building in the fall of 2019. Along with the space for 140 students, the facility is home to the Worthington Trojan Gymnastics team. This new building awaits the final touches of landscaping that will take place in the spring of 2020. The Learning Center is just the start of the growth in the district that is to take place in the upcoming months and years.

Another notable construction project in District 518 is the renovation and remodel of Trojan Field that will begin as soon as weather permits. This includes new bleachers, turf field, track surface, concessions area, scoreboard, field house updates, and more. This project is projected to be completed by the end of August 2020. While construction is taking place, the Worthington Trojan Track and Field team will be utilizing a track facility built at Worthington Middle School this spring.

A second story addition to Worthington High School is another project coming soon. This addition will add seven new classrooms to the school and help to address the space issues faced in that facility. This project is scheduled to begin after the 2019-2020 school year and is slated to be complete by the start of the second quarter of school in the 2020-2021 school year, approximately November 1st.

The final project coming to ISD 518 is the new intermediate school. The bonding for construction of this facility was approved in the November 2019 referendum election. This facility will be constructed for 900 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and will be located on the Crailsheim property south of the Learning Center. By bringing three grades into the new building, space issues will be relieved in Prairie Elementary and Worthington Middle School.

The projects that ISD 518 is looking forward to will work to serve the students in the district by providing the space needed to grow, learn, and strive for excellence. By accommodating our growing student population, the district is able to foster the learning environment that is needed by all students. Along with students, the Trojan Field renovation will benefit the community as it continues to function as a place for events put on by ISD 518, the local YMCA, Minnesota West Community and Technical College, and possibly other entities who identify the newly renovated facility as a gem in our community and surrounding area.

Thank you to our community for all of the support you have provided leading up to these major projects. ISD 518 staff and administration appreciate the backing of our community as we look to address facility maintenance and student enrollment growth. With the support of the community, the excellence that is achieved in the district everyday will continue to be the focus and goal of Independent School District 518.

- John Landgaard Worthington School District 518 Superintendent
