Early College
What is Early College?
Provides a combination of dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students so that they can graduate high school on a clear pathway to either an:
• Associate Degree for Transfer • Completion of 60 credits• 37/39 credit general education
certificate
• Local AA/AS degree completion • 60 credits• Certificates of achievement
Creating a pathway with a clear academic goal and with a career
in mindEarly College provides an opportunity for students to graduate with college credits, a clear post-secondary pathway with a career in mind.
WHY EARLY COLLEGE?
College rigor with developmentally appropriate practices
Dr. Jorge Talamantes, CSUB Physics Professor and Arvin High Students discussing research
Opening Doors to New Careers and Opportunities
“In the Intercultural Communication [class] I learned new things from other cultures, other than mine and the truth about the historical identities from my community. In Arvin when you have an opportunity to have a better education at school it is better to take it than leave it.”
Alejandra, 15 years oldArvin High School / Early College
In Their Own Words
“The thing that I most value most about the Early college program is that it is giving us unforgettable experiences, a chance to prove ourselves, while at the same time giving us a demonstration of what to expect when we go to college.”

The Need
• California’s need for college-educated workers is growing and is projected to outpace the number of residents with a college degree. By 2025, 41 percent of jobs will require at least a Bachelor’s degree, while only 35 percent of working-age adults in California will have earned this level of education. Around 60 percent of new jobs in California this decade are estimated to require at least some college education
• All individuals sentenced to jail and 96 percent of those in prison will eventually return home. It is estimated that over 50,000 people will be released from California’s prisons over the next two years, and thousands more will be released from county jails.
• Propositions 47 and 57 were expected to release of thousands of inmates
• Many California counties were not prepared to provide reentry support for these individuals.
