New Partner Spotlight:We're teaming up with the Metro Nashville Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance (Business Assistance [BAO]) to bring you workshops aimed to help small, minority, woman and service disabled veteran owned businesses (SMWSDVBE) understand how to successfully work with the Metro Nashville Government. The BAO works to coordinate available public and private services in an effort to support the development and economic prosperity of small and disadvantaged businesses.

One goal of the BAO is to provide capacity building trainings for such businesses here in Nashville. Turn to page 6 for a complete list of workshops offered through NCE.

Beginning Guitar $89

Students will learn the basics of playing guitar chords and reading notes in a variety of musical styles in a group environment. Learn how to care for the guitar and tune the instrument properly. Students will learn some basic music theory, with discussion of intervals, chord structure, and scales. Students should bring their own instruments to class.

Intermediate Guitar $89

Do you already know your basic chords? Students continue developing on their prior knowledge of guitar by playing more challenging musical selections. Learn the basics of finger-style posture, playing in harmonics, and using a capo. Students will analyze vocal and piano music to determine chords to be played. Students must bring their own instrument.

Beginning Ukulele $45

Bring your ukulele and join the “ukegroup”. Students will explore ukulele history, tuning, chords and strum patterns. Learn new tunes and note reading in a group setting. Students need an instrument, 3-ring binder and pencil.

Old Time Fiddle $45

Students will learn traditional Tennessee, Georgia, and round peak fiddle tunes, focusing on those that are common in community jam sessions. Tunes will be taught by ear, and we will dissect the techniques used such as rhythmic bowing and chords. Prior fiddle or violin experience required as this is not a beginner class. Students must bring their own instrument.

Singing Traditional Songs $45

Traditional music is meant to be passed down through generations whether you sing for a living or for fun. Students will learn old country and bluegrass songs, ballads, and folk songs and how to share them. Regardless of prior musical experience, you will learn to pick out melodies and harmonies by ear. We will listen to recordings of songs sung by The Carter Family, The Stanley Brothers, George Jones, etc. and then sing them together. No materials necessary, but a recording device is encouraged. A guitar to accompany is also optional.

Instant Piano $70

Learn secrets of the trade to make piano playing a part of your life, learning chords, not notes. You will learn all the chords needed to play any pop song, any style, any key. Topics covered will include chords; musicians’ shortcuts; how to derive all major, minor, and 7th chords, time signatures; simple techniques for counting; and how to substitute for 12,000 complex chords. Fee includes workbook.

Requirement: students must be able to find middle C and know the meaning of “Every Good Boy Does Fine” before attending class.

Creative Writing $40

Discover creative writing abilities through imaginative and innovative activities. Exercises will include icebreakers, team building, power writing, progressive stories, writing prompts, peer review sessions, read aloud, and group discussion. Creative Personal Journaling $25

Studies have shown that keeping a private journal can help improve mental health and creativity, but finding the time to journal in today’s hectic society is tough. Students will get the space time to slow down and write while clearing their minds and releasing anxiety. Through a series of prompts and discussions, students will learn how to create their own unique journaling style, set goals and “Dreamscape.” Bring your own personal journal and a pen.

Imagery in Creative Writing $40

Imagery is the act of appealing to the senses: sight, touch, sound, taste, and smell. Just as a painter creates images from colors and shapes, writers use an array of descriptive words to accurately portray life on a page. Creative writers of every genre are called to practice, explore, and perfect the art of imagery through this course. Students will participate in writing exercises, read from powerful examples, and discuss the elements of what makes effective images in stories. Students will complete two finished pieces and be equipped with one of a writer’s most important skills: imagery. Open to all levels.

Explore Nashville’s Public Art Free

Great art isn’t just in museums. All over Nashville there are sculptures, murals, and pieces created to enhance our public places. While these artworks make bold visual statements, have you ever wondered about the stories behind them? Metro Arts staff will guide you through the city’s public art collection, exploring the artists, inspirations, materials, commissioning organizations, and ongoing care and conservation of our most notable pieces. We’ll also show you how to use the handy mobile website, explorenashvilleart.com.

Note: This is an indoor “armchair tour” with slides. No walking is required, though participants will be provided with suggested routes and are encouraged to visit artworks.

Quality digital cameras are widely available, but owning one is only the first step in taking beautiful photos. Students will learn the basic functions of a DSLR camera to capture an image well! Topics like camera parts and functions, exposure, ISO and depth of field will be covered. Information about lenses, the WB Setting, and characteristics of light will also be discussed. Students must provide their own Digital SLR (camera with manual, not just automatic, settings).

TV Production $50

Students will learn all of the technical elements of working in a TV studio: Camera, Audio, Lights, Video Switcher, Teleprompter, and Audio Mixing. You will also learn the Floor Director and Technical Director roles. Class is fun, interactive, and hands-on. Beginners welcome!

Your next step to becoming a producer! TV Production must be completed prior to attending. This class teaches you all of the elements of putting a series together, managing a studio, collaborating with crew, and becoming a NECAT Producer.

Have you ever wanted to produce your own TV shows? This is the first step with NECAT - Nashville Education, Community and Arts Television. Classes are held at NECAT's studios on the campus of Nashville State Community College. You must complete TV Production before you can attend TV Pre-Production. Completion of these classes not only sets you on the path to becoming a producer, but it allows you to become a member of NECAT. Are you the calm or the storm? This workshop will help you identify your personality style by creating a fair and honest picture of yourself. Finding Part-Time Work After Retirement $25

The growth of the economy in Nashville has resulted in many new part-time employment opportunities in fields from hospitality to logistics. These jobs are an excellent way to supplement retirement income while providing social engagement. Students will assess the skills they have and determine which job posting sites have matching opportunities. Students will learn about application forms, short resumes and get hands-on experience applying for jobs.

We could all be more productive and efficient during the course of the workday. Students will learn how to manage their time so that getting more done feels virtually effortless. Instruction will cover a tried and true system for managing your time. Contracting for Equality: Understanding Metro’s Minority Business Programs For small, minority, and women-owned businesses (SMWBE) the world of government contracting can often feel overwhelming. Recent changes to Metro Nashville’s minority business programs are meant to help ease that burden and increase the number of government contracts going to these traditionally disadvantaged enterprises. Come hear from the principal author of the 2018 Metro Disparity Study as well as Metro’s Chief Procurement Officer, about how SMWBE can benefit from new programing. Metro Purchasing Agents will also be on-hand to help provide additional information and register businesses.

LinkedIn is a business and employment-oriented service that operates via websites and mobile apps. It is mainly used for professional networking, including employers posting jobs and job seekers posting their resumes. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to create and maintain an effective LinkedIn profile that they can use to find employment or launch a business. Are you ready to get LinkedIn?

The Job Shop helps people build careers by identifying what matters most to them by showing them how to work with their passion and goals. This series will start with Resume Refresh 101. Sessions will cover the relevance of LinkedIn and Social Media in today’s job market.

Unconscious Bias & Your Relationships $20

The term unconscious bias has been in the media a lot this year, but what does it mean and how can it affect your personal and work relationships? Unconscious bias is essentially subconscious habits of thinking. We all have unhealthy habits, but when these habits negatively affect our relationships, it’s important to pull them out of our subconscious and see how we might be unintentionally, sabotaging our romantic, friendship and/or professional relationships. Students will complete exercises to help reveal, and ultimately end, their own negative thinking patterns.

Open your creativity to art journals! Learn how to make a coptic stitch journal with pages of watercolor paper. Learn fun techniques to start filling the pages, including collage, zentangles, artists inks, embossed papers, rubber stamping using your own handmade rubber stamp, and more. Students are required to purchase their own materials for projects. A suggested materials list will be given during the first class.

Learn the history of making books as an art and the types of handmade books that are popular today. Learn the different types of bindings and stitching. Create your own handmade books that can be used for gifts or just for yourself.

Basketry: Weaving with Paper $45

Weaving can be a mixed media adventure! Explore acrylic painting techniques then cut your painting into weaving strips. Use those strips to weave a square basket perfect for cocktail napkins or other storage.

Beginning Leather Craft $10

The art of leather working is a craft that has been passed down for generations. Members of the South Central Leathercrafter’s Guild will guide students through the basics of leather carving and tooling including how to transfer a pattern to leather and how to use carving tools including a swivel knife. All materials will be provided.

Handmade Leather Bags $60

There’s nothing more classic or stylish than a simple leather bag. Students will be introduced to leather craft through the creation of a bag. Instruction includes how to stitch the leather, cut straps, edge and burnish, and set rivets. Students will leave class with a completed bag, all materials provided.

Crochet Basics $45

Crochet, the act of pulling of yarn through other loops of yarn, can be used to make articles of clothing, housewares and works of art. Students will learn basic stitches and terminology as well as how to read a crochet pattern. Projects in class will include a basic scarf and making and joining granny squares. Materials for the first project are included in the class fee, but students must provide additional yarn.

createDrypoint Etching $40

If you like to draw, you will love drypoint etching! Learn the basics of etching the low-toxic way, without solvents or acids. Students will create drawings on small plexiglass plates that will be hand inked, and printed on an etching press. Students are encouraged to arrive prepared with ideas, or ready to improvise their imagery on the spot. Perfect for all levels from complete beginners to more experienced printmakers. All materials provided.

Relief Printing Basics $40

Would you like to learn how to print your own cards using traditional techniques? Explore the basics of relief printmaking! Using hand tools to carve your own soft blocks, participants will learn a simple and satisfying process to create and print their own one-color designs, along with basic registration practices, ink techniques, and ways to continue exploring printmaking. Come prepared with ideas or improvise on the spot, and leave with cards and your own printmaking block!

Folded Shibori $30

Students will learn about the folding techniques of Japanese Shibori, a manual resist dyeing technique that results in delightfully mysterious patterns and designs. Students will use man-made dyes with their folded silk scarves to create their own unique patterns.

Note: Students are required to pay a $15 materials fee which includes two silk scarves and dye chemistry.

The Natural Dye Kitchen $25

Students will learn to use natural dyes to create colorful yarns and fabrics. Assist the instructor as he prepares and dyes wool yarns, silk fabrics and other materials using a variety of plant materials and mordants. The perfect class for knitters, weavers, quilters and those that love things from nature.

Making Comics $69

Students will learn how to plot, plan, and prep an eight page mini comic, on the topic of their choice. Learn how to make daily journal comics, create recipe comics, or tell a short story in this immersive class. No drawing skills necessary- artists of all skill levels are welcome. create Explorations in Right Angle Bead Weaving $75

Explore the basics of a unique off loom bead weaving stitch - the right angle weave. Use the four-point system, placing the beads at right angles with needle and thread, to create flexible fabrics that can be used in jewelry, to cover objects, and to create miniature sculptures. Open to beginners and all levels of experience with bead weaving.

Note: Students must pay a $15 materials fee for a starter kit.

Learn the basic foundations of making your very own handmade wire jewelry including the tools, terminology and material utilized. Styles will include rings, bangles and beaded bracelets. Basic tools and materials included in the class fee.

Intermediate Birding $25

Build on basic birding skills by traveling to various Davidson County hotspots, selected to highlight diverse habitats. Learn how to use a spotting scope, determine locations based on season/weather, utilize data and differentiate similar species. Students will come away with a “life list” of birds and know some of the best local places to go birding on their own. Students must complete Beginning Birding or have a working understanding of bird identification, using field guides, eBird, and binocular usage.

Note: Class will meet at various locations, a list will be provided. Students will travel independently.

Safe Sleep and Care for Infants Free

Receive information on creating a safe sleep environment, the effects of smoking, information on the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy, and the benefits of breastfeeding. Get tips for talking to other caretakers regarding your baby's needs. Light refreshments provided. All moms will walk away with a pack ‘n play, fitted sheet, sleep sack, and diaper bag full of goodies. Only pregnant moms and one support person should register for class.

Pioneer Cast Iron Cooking $35

Students will learn how pioneers cooked breads, full meals, and desserts on the hearth. Use of cast iron cookware, utensils and cooking techniques will be demonstrated. Over the course of three weeks, students will cook cornbread, cakes, and main dishes outside in the school courtyard. Students are required to bring a folding camp chair to the outdoor classroom.

how to register:online at www.nashville.gov/ceNEW STUDENTS: To register online, new students must create a secure personal account by following the directions. Don’t forget your login and password! After that, login whenever you wish to register for a class online.

RETURNING STUDENTS: If you registered online last semester, login to your account. If you have taken a class before, but are not registered online, an online login has been created for you. Click “forgot password” on the login page to get started.

• Only credit card payment is accepted online. All transactions include an additional 2.3% processing fee.

student withdrawal: Students must withdraw from a class no less than 3 days before the first class meeting. refund policy: A refund is issued if a class is can-celed by Nashville Community Education, or if a student withdraws from class a minimum of 3 days prior to the first class.

If you paid by cash, check, or money order: Our refund process requires that students who paid by cash, check, or money order complete a refund form. After this refund form has been returned to staff, students should expect a check in the mail from Metro Government of Nashville and Davidson County within three to four weeks.

If you paid by credit card: Our refund process requires that students who pay by credit card complete a refund form. After this form has been returned to staff, credit card refunds can be processed immediately, and should be reflected in the student’s credit card balance within 2-3 days after staff process the refund.

Class credit option: Students can elect to receive a class credit instead of a refund for a class cancellation or student withdrawal. Credits must be used within the same fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Credits not used by June 30 will be forfeited.

class cancellations / inclement weatherNCE will cancel all classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment 48 hours prior to the start of class.

Please check your email for notification of any class cancellation or for scheduling information.

NCE does not hold classes when Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) are closed for school breaks or due to inclement weather. We attempt to reschedule classes, but cannot guarantee that classes will be made up.

• Nashville Community Education is an adult program. • Children cannot accompany students to classes.• NCE does not provide childcare during class time.
