Kennedy Pool selected for 2017 Somerville Small
Business Excellence Award
Somerville, MA - September 06, 2017 — Kennedy
Pool has been selected for the 2017 Somerville
Small Business Excellence Award in the Swimming
Pools classification by the Somerville Small
Business Excellence Award Program.
Various sources of information were gathered and
analyzed to choose the winners in each
category. The 2017 Somerville Small Business Excel-
lence Award Program focuses on quality, not
quantity. Winners are determined based on the
information gathered both internally by the
Somerville Small Business Excellence Award Program
and data provided by third parties.
EXCELLENCE AWARD 3RD YEAR IN A ROW!
About the Somerville Small Business Excellence Awards Program
The Somerville Small Business Excellence Awards recognizes outstanding small businesses that
serve the Somerville area. Each year, our selection committee identifies businesses that we
believe have achieved outstanding marketing success in their local community and business
classification.
Recognition is given to those companies that have shown the ability to use their best practices and
implemented programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value. These are small
businesses that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers
and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Somerville area a vibrant and
vital place to live.
The Somerville Small Business Excellence Awards was established to reward the best of small
businesses in Somerville. Our organization works exclusively with local business owners, trade
groups, professional associations and other business advertising and marketing groups. Our
mission is to award the small business community’s contributions to the U.S. economy.

HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS TO LOVE LESSONS
If your child is feeling nervous about swim lessons—or they just plain aren’t
liking them, you may feel frustrated, but don’t despair, there are ways to help
and encourage your child to love swim lessons!
1. Talk to your child about lessons and swimming before and after:
Do some problem solving to see what’s making them not want to get in
the water. Are they afraid? Do they think the water is too cold? Or do they
just not like being away from mom or dad? The more you talk about why
your child is feeling that way, the better the instructors and you can talk
about how to handle it.
2. Don’t minimize fear:
Like with anything, you should not
pretend that a fear does not exist
(if that is the reason) and invalidate
your child’s feelings. You can work on (and through) fears with
patience and consistency, but if they are not recognized, it can only
make things worse!
3. Don’t overdramatize or draw attention to your child’s worries:
Although you should take any fear seriously, overreacting can fuel it.
The way you act and phrase things can really make a difference in building confidence, like saying “Sarah is
still working on putting her face in the water” instead of “Sarah is terrified of going under the water.”
4. Praise and encourage your child when they try to overcome the fear:
Express confidence that they will they will eventually succeed.
Positive reinforcement will help encourage behaviors. The happier and
more positive experience that they have, the more they will want to
come back.
5. Practice with your child:
Spending time with your child in the water and have them show you
everything they have learned can be a fun way to positively frame
swim lessons. This can also be time to work on silly fun times in the
water (if there is any fear). Working and practicing skills that are difficult
can make progress faster.
6. Be consistent with lessons and make it a habit:
The more consistent lessons are, the more progress your child will
make and the more they will become accustomed to the rhythm of lessons (and the water as well)! You can’t
expect a child to overcome fear or become an expert swimmer from one lesson (or 1 session), so if you want
them to make progress, commit to swim lessons.
7. Have a long view and be realistic:
Producing results and swimming progress takes time and every child is different. You cannot gauge your
child’s progress on that of other kids. Every small step in minimizing fear and progressing skills is a win, and
should be celebrated!

10 | KENNEDY POOL NEWSLETTER | Spring 2017
If your child is prone to the shivers even in our heated
small pool then a smart investment may be a warmer
option to a swimsuit. Thermal shirts or wetsuits can be
worn with bathing suit to increase coverage and body
heat. Trust us, a quality neoprene wetsuit can make a
world of difference. However, before buying one, there
are a few things you should look for when you’re in the
market for a wet suit or thermal shirt.
Thickness: Wetsuits for children come in
thicknesses of anywhere from 2mm to 6.5mm.
Higher thicknesses give more warmth but reduces
mobility, making swimming (especially in a lesson
setting) much more difficult. The sweet spot for
pools and beaches is around 2-3mm. However, if
you’re going in water with temperatures around or
below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, 3-4mm thick is also
acceptable.
Type: There are three primary varieties: full suits,
farmer johns, and shorties. Shorty suits are ideal for
young swimmers, as they combine core warmth
with higher mobility. Full-length suits, which have
full arms and legs, are probably excessive for
average settings, while farmer johns (full legs and
no arms) are great for those who don’t want the
feeling of constricting sleeves or who are prone to
rashes.
Quality: Although it may be hard to judge the overall
quality, a good rule of thumb is to ensure the
material is neoprene and check the seams. If they
are well-constructed with solid thread, have no
frays, and are relatively thin (to avoid
uncomfortable chafing) then the suit will probably
be a good choice.
Fit: To have a thermal shirt or suit be effective, it is
important that it fits snugly. If it is too loose it will
not only be ineffective at keeping your child warm,
but it will also make it harder to swim. If it is too
tight, it will also restrict movement. To make sure, it
helps to go with your child to a store to test one out
or when shopping online be sure to purchase from a
retailer that allows for easy returns/exchanges.
For parents who are concerned about their children’s warmth but don’t
want to keep purchasing additional wetsuits with every growth spurt.
Adjustable shoulder straps allow for growth and ensure a snug fit. (https://
