Congratulations to all
On the 14th of February we dis-covered that our dresses were through to the Junk Kouture regional final. We were so excited and we started to prepare our dresses ‘Duchess of Darkness’, ‘Frozen Falcon’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’. There was a lot of
planning to do before the 3rd of March, when our dresses would each walk down the catwalk in the Helix. Early on that Friday morning we met at the Helix and got settled into our amazing dressing rooms. We had a quick look around and got the chance to see lots of the other teams and their amazing garments. There were 82 outfits and only nine
would get through to the grand final in the 3 arena this April. After a busy day of hair makeup and rehearsals it was finally time for the show to begin. The models lined up backstage and waited nervously for our names to be called. For the three of us who were models the experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity. For the rest of the team members in the audience the atmosphere was incredible and each performance was amazing. Unfortunately we did not make it into the final but we look forward to going to see it in April! TY Students—Emer Whelan, Aisling Leahy, Abby O’Connor, Lucy Gammell & Orla Kelly.

Junk Kouture Eastern Regional Finalists—TY Art Module
From the Principal’s Desk - March 2017
The month of March is proving to be a
very busy time in the school calendar
with the advent of the arrival of the
SEC examiners for our JC and LC
practical subjects including Home Eco-
nomics and Musicianship and the Oral
Examiners for the languages. The buzz
of preparation and anticipation is de-
scending on the corridors, the practice
lunchtime recitals are both purposeful
and a treat to listen to and the kitch-
ens are as busy as any ‘bake off’ com-
petition from early morning. We are
keeping our fingers crossed for all our
exam students! Ms Dillon has timed
the ‘Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory’
themed week in the Library very well
for the lead up to Easter
next week as a treat to
be kept in mind for all on
the home stretch at the
end of a productive term.
Many of the school competitions and
League fixtures have come to a conclu-
sion by now. Congrats are due firstly
to all of our students both Senior and
Junior cycle involved in the many
rounds of Debating and Public Speak-
ing throughout the year and may I in-
clude the Irish, French, Spanish and
recent Linguistic Olympiad in there
also. There was outstanding participa-
tion and preparation by individual stu-
dents from the Second Years speaking
in the Trinity Women’s Graduate Pub-
lic Speaking, to the Leinsters, Con-
cerns, Knights of Columbanus and the
Dun Laoghaire Rotary Competition to
a recent invite to the Model Council of
Europe Competition in Dublin Castle.
How great it was to see our Third
Year students get to the final of the
Gael Linn Competition. It was a very
hard fought and engaging series of pub-
lic speaking events this term where
our girls held their own against in the
most prestigious competitions and al-
most in all cases saw them advance
into the very final stages of the compe-
titions. Well done to all the girls in all
years who participated and to the
teaching staff who encouraged and
accompany the debating and public
speaking teams along the way.
Congrats also to the school Choir on
an excellent turnout and excellent re-
sults achieved in the recent Wesley
Choral Competition. It was great to
see the loyalty of the students to their
Choir and their keenness to partici-
pate and enjoy the competition.
And it was a great pleasure to see the
Hockey teams enjoy recent success in
beginning with the Leinster semi-finals
for the Senior team against Sion Hill
on 08 March, a Final for the Minor
Cup team winning their match against
St Mary’s in Naas on 10 March, the
First Years who got to Quarter final
stage of the League last week and final-
ly the Senior team who reached the
Final of the Leinster ‘B’ division against
Teresians before the bank holiday
weekend. The seniors were narrowly
defeated by a single goal but played
with wonderful commitment and team
spirit on the day and our thanks go to
the Hockey coaches who encouraged
the girls onto success throughout this
season.

We similarly congratulate the Basketball
teams and Badminton teams on their recent
successes.
There was success too for our Business
Enterprise students and very successful re-
cent History outings, including the highly
popular Derry trip.
Congrats to the three TY Junk Kouture
teams of girls who got through to the Re-
gional Finals of the competition in the Helix
on 02 March last and to the Art teachers
who inspired their creativity. Come and see
all the entries and more at the School
Fashion Show on Thursday 04 May
next in the school Concert Hall in conjunc-
tion with the TY Enterprise students. It
promises to be another night of fun, colour
and entertainment.
The above extra - curricular events form
part of the very important and complex
tapestry of experiences in school life
through which the girls develop confidence,
fulfilment and a sense of their own
strengths and a sense of who they are. Hen-
ry Ford said that personal growth comes
from ‘realising that you are able to do what
you were afraid to do’ and hopefully the
girls will have added a good dollop of enjoy-
ment into the mix also in their participation
in all of the above also.
Hope you all have a very enjoyable Easter
holiday ahead.

The Senior As, captained by Ail-bhe Mulhall and Lauren Murray have had an excellent season –defeating Manor House, Santa Sabina, Sutton Park, Skerries Community College and Dundalk Grammar on their way to qualify-ing for the semifinal. There, they were met by Sion Hill, but cheered on by great supporters, Cluny were the stronger team and qualified to meet Teresians in the final. Having played Teresians twice this season (won one and lost one) it was all to play for. Unfortunately Teresians proved stronger on the day, winning by a single goal. Nevertheless it was a memorable occasion for all concerned – players, coaches, parents, and support-ers. Well done to all ! The Senior Cup saw us drawn against Teresians in the first round. After a very closely con-tested match in which neither
team scored, the result was decid-ed by 1v1s. Cluny with the aid of excellent goalkeeping by Caoimhe Hyland came out on top. Wesley College were our opponents in the 2nd round and despite another positive performance from the Seniors, we were narrowly beaten by a 2-1 scoreline.
The Senior Bs captained by Emma Maye and Sarah Kelly also had an excellent season going all the way to the semifinal before los-ing narrowly to Mt Anville after 1v1s. Along the way they had victories over Wil-sons Hospital, and another Mt Anville team. Unfortu-nately a couple of teams in their league dropped out which reduced the number of games played but they acquitted themselves very well and were unlucky not to make it all the way to the Final.

The Juniors, captained by Ellen O Neill started their league cam-paign very well with victories over Holy Faith Clontarf and Sacred Heart Tullamore. A disappointing defeat against Muckross upset
their run and Donabate Communi-ty School also proved too strong. Nevertheless a strong finish against Drogheda Grammar while positive, just saw them fail to come out of their group.
son and Kate Lee, they were unlucky not to progress but should be very proud of their efforts.
The Minor Bs began their league with victories over Mt Anville, East Glendalough, Our Ladys Terenure and Loreto Beaufort. They quali-fied to meet Muckross in the quar-terfinal. Captained by Tara Wat-

St Marys drew level just after halftime, but not to be out-done Meabh Moore scored her second goal of the game which saw Cluny emerge victorious. Cue the celebrations for players and sup-porters alike.
The Minor As were crowned Lein-ster Champions, captained by Em-ma Power and Kate P Regan, they had a great season. The had vic-tories over Dominican Cabra, Manor House, Sutton Park, Holy Faith Clontarf, Teresians and Mt Anville. St Gerards were the op-position in the semifinal which re-sulted in a 2-1 win. St Marys Naas provided the Final opposition. Cheered on by lots of supporters Cluny took a 1-0 lead.
Page 5 2nd Edition
The As began the season very well. Led by Captain Hari Fidg-eon, they began with victories against Santa Sabina, Mt Temple and Teresians, which saw them qualify to meet Alexandra Col-lege in the playoffs. A comprehensive defeat saw them reach the quarterfinals where they met Mt Anville. Despite lots of possession, luck was not on our side and the game finished 0-0. 1v1s followed and Cluny unfortunately lost out in a penalty shootout. The Bs and Cs progressed well during the season with victories over Our Lady’s Terenure and Mt Temple and were unlucky not to progress from their groups. Congratulations to all the players on their achievements this season, and a special word of thanks to the coaches – Stephanie Murphy, Jenny Sykes and Sarah Hyland for their hard work and dedication to the teams. The final match on the pitch this season saw Belfast Harlequins contest an EYHL match V UCD Ladies, which was an opportunity to see Division 1 Hockey. Eight of our Minor team acted as ballgirls for the match for which both visiting teams were very grateful. That brought an end to a very successful season.

6th Year.
On the 10th March, the 5th and 6th
years history classes set out for
Derry. On the first day, we met Tony a
tour guide who brought us around
the walls of Derry. He explained
the history of the city of Derry, in
particular the siege of Derry in the
17th century. Next, we met Stuart and his father,
two members of The Apprentice
Boys of Derry. They gave us a tour
around their museum and the me-
morial hall. We were also able to
go into the Orange Order and Ap-
prentice Boys meeting halls. It was
great to go in and sit in the seats of
the members of the order especial-
ly when we had learned so much
about the organisation in class. On Saturday we met Eugene who
had previously been a member of
the IRA. He had also spent some
time in prison for activities during
the troubles. He was a very inter-
esting character! We got a tour of
The Free Derry museum. He also
guided us on a tour
of the Catholic
Bogside area and
the murals where
the events of
Bloody Sunday oc-
curred. We really enjoyed
the trip and it was very educational.
We got to hear stories from both
sides of the society in Northern
Ireland. Our trip really helped us to
picture the troubles and the events
that took place in Derry. It further
reinforced the information we had
learned in class and it was great to
see each of the sites we had
learned about
in the class-
room. We would like
to thank the
teachers who
came with us,

naughton, Ms.

This year St. Joseph of Cluny entered a total of six teams into the Dublin League 2016-17. Starting with the U19A team (photo above) and bearing in mind this team are all sixth years and studying very hard but gave their commitment to the game but were knocked out by a very strong St. Marys, Naas in their division. Good luck to Amber Barry ,Alison Barnes, Mia Kenny and Catriona Grant in their Leaving Certificate in June. U16 B team got to semi-finals of the Dublin League but were beat-en by Loreto College, Bray. U16A (Photo across) team got runner-up in Dublin League and played in Leinster Finals. They came up against schools like Kilken-ny College and Naomh Cormac and came third. U14C team got to Quarterfinals and got a draw, but when points were added they lost by 10 points. U14B got to semi-finals and were beaten by Our Lady’s, Terenure. This team had only started playing in September, 2016 so they did really well. U14A (photo across) did so well this year, they got runner up in Dublin League Division 1 and they played in Leinster finals against St. Marys, Naas coming second. This is very good for these girls as it is the first time U14s have played in Division 1. Well done to Grace McSweeney, Emer Leahy, Astrid Petersen and First Year Ailbhe McCabe. Now with Easter approaching we have entered the Cream Egg Cup playing schools in the local area. This year Woodbrock College in Shankill have entered the competition so the girls get to play against boys!! R. Kelly
The First Years have settled in and are enjoying the variety of sports & games offered by the school. The Basketball sea-son is coming to the end for First & Second Years with the teams qualifying for quarterfinals & semi-finals. As always we wish the teams all the best! Minor A team had very tough loss against the Loreto St. Stephens Green 22-23 one lost and the girls were very unfortunate not to be playing in the Leinster B final on Wednes-day. The team has a second chance on Monday in the South Dublin Basketball League Minor semi-final vs rivals Loreto Dalkey. Come on Cluny! Well done to the minor B team who didn't make the quarterfinals but are new to
the game of basketball and will continue to im-prove. The team are full of capable players who if they continue to play will get better. The 2nd Years teams both have had very good seasons and are really enjoying their games. Both teams have made it to the playoffs. There’s a little March madness going on with matches after Patrick's weekend. The Jun-ior B team host St. Colmcille's, Knocklyon and Junior A has a tough assignment away to Muck-ross. It has been a very tough league for the second years. They have truly earned their place in the semi-finals. E. Randolph

There has been lots going on in the Guidance Dept. It has been a very busy few weeks for the 6th Years. On top of prepar-ing and taking their Mock Exams, they also had to complete their CAO application form. Each student has had at least one individual appoint-ment with the Guidance Counselling Team. Choosing the courses to be included on the CAO application is one of the biggest decisions each student has to make. It is important to use the support and guidance available and remember that your application can be amended be-tween early May and 1st July. Don’t hesitate to arrange an appointment if you have any questions at all. Congratulations to the girls who have applied for PLC courses and have had their interview and been offered a college place next Septem-ber. Well done girls! The series of career talks for all 5th and 6th Year students are continu-ing. Speakers, to date, have includ-ed representatives from UCD, DIT and one of our very own past-pupil’s Heather Rainey, who has recently been appointed as the School Liai-son Officer at DCU. Well done Heather!
In January, 5th Year enjoyed a tour and presentation of course options at UCD. The trip was excellent and feedback was very positive from all who attended. All TY’s sat the DATs (Aptitude Tests) in February. Each student will have an individual appointment with their guidance counsellor who will explain their results. We also offer an additional aptitude and interest test [Eirquest] for those who are interested in this.
1st and 2nd Year students will be completing a career research project this term to find out as much as they can about a career that they are interested in. It seems like a long time ago since the 1st Years joined us. Every 1st Year student has completed their first individual appointment with a guidance counsellor. We meet with the girls regularly to ensure that all is going well.
The incoming 1st Year students at-tended an Information Evening which was a great success. They all have completed their CAT4 Entrance Test in advance of starting at Cluny.
TALKS 1st Year attended an Internet Safety talk from Webwise. Paul delivered a very engaging presentation to the girls, explaining the importance of safety online. Bodywhys, the Eating Disorder Organisation of Ireland, spoke to 2nd Year about the importance of a posi-tive and healthy approach towards diet and exercise. Anti-bullying agency, Sticks & Stones, provided a half-day work-shop to 1st & 2nd Year. Cluny is very fortunate to have a fully qualified Guidance Counsellor in the school at all times. The team provide 3 main areas of support to students:
Educational - study skills and apti-tude testing Vocational – career advice and guid-ance Pastoral - We are here to offer sup-port to students in times of crisis or if they are just having a bad day. Discussions are entirely confidential, unless the student is at risk. So, students need not worry that we will pass on anything that they tell us, unless of course they provide per-mission for us to do so. Talking sounds easy but can be a very diffi-cult thing to do at times. But it al-ways helps. So remember, if you need someone to talk to about any worries or concerns, please pop in and have a chat.
Remember our door is always open.
All students should keep an eye on the noticeboard out-side the Guidance room for information and updates of career events. All infor-
mation related to careers and colleges is displayed on the
noticeboard. Please also check your school email ac-count regularly for notices
from us. Ms. McFarland & Ms. Fleming

This year, on a cold Tuesday night in November, the Cluny voluntary choir and orchestra at-tended the Broadway musical 'Sister Act' in the Bord Gais Energy theatre. As a lead-up to our musical outing, our choir masters taught the choir a 3-part medley of 'Sister Act' songs including some favourites from the movies, such as Shout and I will follow him. After learn-ing these songs we were all set to go to the theatre. Following a rather eventful bus ride, we reached the theatre and the comfort of our seats. The atmosphere in the hall was buzzing and everyone couldn't wait for the show to begin. Our excitement was not in vain as the show was brilliant, with great singing and acting from Alexandra Burke and the other incredibly talented cast members. Unfortunately the songs we learned were not featured but that didn't dampen our spirits. We all had a great night and the voluntary choir and orchestra are thankful for Ms Connaughton for organis-ing it. Sarah Newport 4N

Cluny Choir Trip to Sister Act
On the 1st of March 2017, half of our year participated in a Film-Making Workshop facilitat-
ed by a group called ‘The Reelists’. We gathered in the library that morn-ing where we met with two film mak-ers. They introduced us to the differ-ent aspects of film making, from the roles needed to create a film, to the camera shots and angles. They gave us a task of telling a story through a limited number of photos. They gave us themes and cameras in which to create our story. We then presented our photo stories to the rest of the group. This was really an interesting task to take part in. After break, we returned to the library for the second part of our workshop. We were told that we would be creat-ing our own short films, using profes-sional cameras and sound equipment. We brainstormed various plots and ideas. After much deliberation, we settled two different storylines. One was about cooking in a school labora-tory, ending in mysterious murders. The other was about a school musical performance, where the star of the show is murdered onstage. We learnt
about the various camera angles we could use and how it is more effective to use different camera angles rather than the same one constantly. We then began to shoot! We realised that there is much more involved in film-making than what we originally thought. It took us over an hour to get a few scenes finished, but we en-joyed every bit of it! Once our film was wrapped up, we returned to the library, where the film makers began showing us how to edit our short films. We got to see how our films begin to take shape. Once our films were fully edited, we were then able to watch them. We were really excit-ed to see each other’s finished films. We were surprised by how profession-al they turned out, and really enjoyed watching them. We look forward to displaying our film at our Transition Year exhibition evening. Overall, we really enjoyed this oppor-tunity and the experience this work-shop provided us with; we are all much more knowledgeable and aware of the process of film making. We are extremely excited about taking part in the other workshop planned for us later this year! By Ciara Walsh and Holly Hunt 4C
as the skin care routine you should follow be-fore applying tan. Then we learned about body types, body image and a small bit on mental health and social media. When all the theory was over we then had a little pamper session for the last hour of the day. We used body scrubs on our hands which exfoliated and moisturised them. To finish off the day, we did a bit of nail care and painting. Overall, we enjoyed the day and learned a lot from it. It really helped bring our year closer together and mix more than we usually would. We are real-ly looking forward to the film production workshop that we have coming up in April, as we really enjoyed this one. Emma Mulholland and Orla
Shannon-Transition Year
On March 1st half of our year group piled into the study hall excited for the day ahead. The once clean and neatly placed chairs and desks turned into a red carpet runway. The sides of the study hall were piled with cases of the unknown. We started the workshop off by getting into groups and listing off our dislikes towards common habits e.g. not saying thank you. We then moved onto learning the five most common handshakes in the world, these are the knuckle crusher, the profession-al, the politician, the tea-cup, the wrestler and the dead fish. After break, we learned how to properly set a dining table in the same manner as a five star restaurant. The facilitators taught us how to be mannerly at the dinner table, what cutlery to use at each course and what type of wine goes in each glass for e.g. the glass for red wine has a more round base than white. After we finished our dining lessons we then went onto working on our posture when walking. We put on our heels and walked down the red carpet to the beat of the music all while we had books balanced on our heads to straighten out our backs. After lunch, we learned more about personal hy-giene; how to keep our hair and skin healthy as well
