When sharing my score with friends, I found myself saying that I shot an “84” but scored an eight on one hole and three-pued four greens! Looking back on what was indeed a glorious round of golf for me, it dawned on me that what I seem to recall most from that round were the “misses” that I had – and that is a shame. Why is it that the chip in off the green, the long par saving pu, and the recovery shot out of the rough are overshadowed by the one ball hit out of bounds and the missed three-footers? It seems far more appropriate and far more enjoyable to remember those shots that truly defined the round. Before teeing off on the 2nd tee, take a moment to check out the spectrum of seasonal colors that line the fairways and reflect off the ponds. ose wild flower areas that somehow lure our golf balls from the fairway on the 12th hole are chameleon-like in how they change colors before succumbing to winter. As you finish puing out on 16, turn back to the 15th green - it’s a sight to behold. Finally, although the adage in golf is to keep your head down, be sure to find the occasion to look up at the crisp blue skies and the hues of the seing sun. An Invitation to JoinBRCC Men’s Golf Association

for the 2016 Season

The Men’s Association welcomes all male Basking Ridge Country Club members (with weekend privileges), over the age of 16, who desire friendly, organized, and spirited golf competition.   We encourage your

participation and hope you’ll join in the fun and friendship that are part of our group.   Tournaments are held from May through October and structured to ensure fair play for golfers of all handicaps.

If you are a returning member of the Men’s Association, we are delighted to have you back in our group.   If you are a new member and looking to make friends for weekend play, the Men’s Association is one way to meet your goal.  If you’re uncertain of what the Men’s Association offers, we suggest that you talk to our returning members, the Pro Shop, or the Men’s Association committee and discover the good times had in the past and that are expected in the future.   Watch future Club e-mails and newsletters for more information.

Men’s Association dues are $150 for the year, which covers entry into our tournaments.  Please complete the sign-up form found on the Club website or in the Pro Shop. Make the check payable to: BRCC Men’s Association.

A copy of the 2016 Tournament Schedule & Rulebook can be found on our website in the “Member’s Only” section.

2016 Basking Ridge Women’s Golf Association (BRWGA)

If you are considering joining the leagues for the first time, or are re-joining us for another year, we’d love to have your company! Playing in a league is a great way to learn the game, hone your skills and make new friends.

The 9-Hole League plays on Tuesdays and is perfect for the beginning or intermediate golfer or the busy person who just has a few hours to spare one morning a week. The emphasis is definitely on fun and learning the game. There are a wide range of handicaps in this league.

The competitive Thursday 18-Hole and the Sunday 18-Hole Leagues are aimed at the more competitive golfer. The Sunday League was created for women who usually cannot play during the week, and welcomes all members with weekend privileges. We do offer a fit for Sunday beginners.

We hope you consider at least one of the leagues. If interested, please fill out and send in the application located on the “Members Section” of the club website. Interested, but need more information? Please contact one of the board members listed below. They look forward to talking to you and making arrangements for a first time “play date.”

Course News from our

Greens Superintendant Craig Mencl

Course Reviews . . .The Stimpmeter, is often misused to compare the speed of greens from course to course and unfortunately, to establish a benchmark of putting difficulty. Golfers are sometimes heard to say, “Hey, Hickory Hills was ‘stimping’ 13 last week.” This essentially means that the greens

were as fast as the linoleum on most kitchen floors. However, this quest for fast greens has serious consequences in terms of cost, environmental quality and the long-term health of the green. In short, speed can kill. Here’s why:

Fast greens are extremely fragile. Their “immune systems” can be very weak. They become susceptible to diseases and pests, and therefore may require more chemical treatments. Weather can also quickly destroy the health of an ultrafast green. High temperatures and lack of moisture in the air are deadly to greens that are maintained at very short cutting heights for any length of time.

The risks of maintaining fast greens -- even with the best professional management by superintendents -- were apparent in the summer of 1995 when golf courses across the eastern United States lost greens during an extended period of drought and high temperatures. Many of the world’s best-known courses suffered serious damage and were essentially unplayable for the last half of the year. Many of these had to be reseeded or completely rebuilt at a cost that was high in terms of budget, playability and reputation.

On the other side, golfers should understand and accept the limitations of these living systems we call greens. Golfers should have an understanding of superintendents who manage, nurture and protect these ecosystems. And finally, many golfers must change their attitudes about the competitive aspect of green speeds. They should strive for fairness, not fastness.

As your Superintendent my staff and I have implemented several new practices to maintain the highest quality greens of fairness and fastness that we can provide to our membership. Your enjoyment always weighs heavily on our minds as we look forward to another enjoyable Golf Season.

From Outside the Membership

First time playing the course and I have to say I was

very impressed. Conditions were beautiful and course

was very challenging. I felt like I was on the PGA Tour.

After our round we ate at the outdoor bar area. Service

was great and the food was very good. I very much

appreciated the invite and hope to play there again

next season. I would highly recommend a membership

to those in the area. —B.C.

What a great club! The staff was extremely

accommodating and helpful. The golf course was in

phenomenal shape for the beginning of April, and was

tough but fair to play. I was forced to use every club in

the bag, shape shots both ways, and the greens rolled

fast and true. My kind of course! —J.W.

I recently had the opportunity to play at Basking Ridge

Country Club and was quite impressed. The course was

scenic and in immaculate condition with lush fairways

and meticulously groomed greens. The 18 holes were

challenging yet fair, and was enjoyed by golfers of all

levels in our foursome.

The staff was friendly and eager to assist us, adding to

the overall experience.

With the restaurant, DH Outpost onsite, we were able

to enjoy drinks and food following our round. I highly

recommend Basking Ridge Country Club. —W. F.

PACE of PLAYWhat makes a slow group slow? Is it that one person who takes eons to hit their shot that slows down the group? Does it happen when one or more players loose their ball on the same hole? Could a person watch an entire round of the Masters in the time it takes a slow group to leave the putting green? While the answer to these questions may seemingly be a “yes”, every golfer must keep in mind his/her responsibility to the group and the field of players around them. Even if you don’t think it’s you – you are part of a group. The USGA Rule Book states “It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through.”

Interestingly, most groups’ slow play is not in their fairway play, but in the time it takes the group to get off the tees and greens. The teeing ground is a great place to play “Ready Golf ” which simply means that each golfer within the group hits when they are ready. Golfers who ride in carts are particularly slow with this. Some groups have been seen to take 3-4 minutes after arriving at the tee before a single shot is hit! You can fill out your scorecard or take a bite of your sandwich after you hit your shot.

The putting green is another area where groups get slow. Out of politeness we wait for the person furthest away to hit their shot. This is fine and part of the game, but at the same time each player should have completely figured out their putt and be ready to execute as soon as possible. Try to follow this rule of thumb, if someone isn’t hitting their putt or about to, then you are loosing the pace of the game. There is a rhythm to this movement that makes it enjoyable for everyone, including the group behind you!

In an effort to go out and have a friendly round we often avoid confrontation and are unwilling to speak up and say to one or all of our group members “could we please speed up?” This is nothing to take personal; tempo is a part of the game and can actually help you to perform at your best. Just think, if each player recognized his/her role in the group pace of play would never have to be an issue.
