I often find myself wrestling with a very pragmatic question. What is the end result of a deeper spirituality or a spiritual awakening? In other words, what should it look like in a persons life? This has been a question humans have thought about since the advent of spirituality. One popular response has been to define a strict set of standards that individuals must adhere to in order to prove they are indeed “spiritual”. Fundamentalists from all religious traditions have adopted this very outcome driven method. Unfortunately, as we have all seen in our experiences, this approach can be faked and people often arrive at the approved goals without truly going through a spiritually transformative process. To boil it down to its simplest form, I believe the path of spiritual development encompasses four main areas in our lives. • Spiritual – our understanding of the metaphysical world • Mental – the development of the mind • Physical – our bodily connection to the spirit and mind • External – our outward actions toward others Over the past several months, two significant events happened through Stillpoint that are shaping the “Externals” of who we are and where we are going as a center for spiritual development. The first was the Parliament of the World’s Religions in October. Gathering with approximately 10,000 people from all religious traditions around the world brought an energy and focus that was very much in harmony with Stillpoint. After several days of attending plenary sessions and workshops it was easy to see that a major outcome of spiritual development is serving others and working for justice. In complete harmony, each faith emphasized the importance of spirituality in action within our world. The second major event happened in November as a group of 13 Stillpoint pilgrims spent a week working and learning in the Mayan culture of Guatemala. In very unique ways we were able to take the inward, spiritual journey and put it into action. We found that immersing ones self in the service of others only deepens our understanding of the Divine. Whether it be in Las Vegas, Guatemala, or anywhere else our journey might take us, the words of Jesus always ring true when he said:‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’I invite you to join us this Spring as we continue to find ways for us to expand our understanding of the Divine in ways that strengthen our Spirit, Mind, Body, and also those who are placed in our lives. With Gratitude, Brian Neely

Spiritual Direction Spiritual DirectionSpiritual Directors’ Professional Peer Group Supervision Collaborating with peers for supportive and non judgmental supervision is an ethical standard for people who work in therapeutic practices. Peer Supervision creates a safe, learning environment where the members relate as peers in an atmosphere of mutual respect, honesty and shared wisdom. Peer Supervision is necessary to develop the inner supervisor needed for accountability in the solitary setting that is Spiritual Direction. Stillpoint offers Peer Supervision to Spiritual Directors who are currently companioning directees, and who have received Certification from a recognized institution, or are interns in a formation program.

Centering Prayer in CommunityDeveloped by Fr. Thomas Keating, Centering Prayer is a method of prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of God’s presence in Contemplative Prayer. Beyond thoughts, words and emotions, Centering Prayer leads to a resting in God. Praying in a group setting creates an atmosphere where the mind is quieted more easily, a sacred community is formed, and practitioners experience a depth that bears fruit in spirit, body and mind.

Dates: Every other Tuesday beginning, January 12, 2016Time: 12:15 - 12:45 p.m.; Gathering and pre-meeting at 12 pm Lectio Divina Prayer TrainingInterested in participating in a Prayer Group at Stillpoint? Or do you wish to learn this method of prayer for your own daily prayer practice? Do you need a refresher on our prayer method? This workshop is for you!

Date: Monday, Jaunuary 11, 2015 Time: 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. This form of Prayer taught at Stillpoint, and practiced by Prayer Groups, is a method that enables the one praying, to hear God’s voice and know God’s mind on the subject of his/her prayer. The practice includes Lectio Divina, Journaling, Reflection and Centering Prayer. When practiced daily, it is one of the richest spiritual practices available. It offers a true opportunity for “A Transformative Encounter with God”.

Dates: Every other week (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) beginning January 5, 2016

All prayer offerings at Stillpoint are offered on a donation basis.

Thinking Better...Feeling Better: Who is in charge here?

This workshop invites the attendees to reflect on how they have been moved by their conscious thoughts to unhappiness or happiness. Practice exercises

using the mental muscle of our preception will lead the participant to re-form their thoughts so that a seemingly negative event may not be negative at all. We discover that the negativity is often something we manufacture and attribute to an event. Participants often discover what it means to be

in charge of their conscious thoughts. Instead of the worlds circumstances “out there” dictating to someone how they should feel... they decide how they

should feel. Suddenly they are sitting in the drivers seat of their emotional

life and life itself becomes sweet as one moves from “victim to creator”

Stillpoint Readers’ Community

Spiritual Reading is a basic spiritual practice. Being part of a reading group offers opportunities for community, hospitality, reflection and spiritual nourishment. Join Stillpoint Readers’ Community for thoughtful, inspiring conversations.

January Book: A New Harmony by John Philip Newell A more holistic and natural way of thinking about faith. In his previous book, Christ of the Celts, J. Philip Newell emphasized the Celtic view of the oneness of creation and humanity as expressed through Christ. In that poetic treatment of the wisdom of Celtic spirituality, Newell pointed the way to a more peaceful, harmonious, integrated Christianity. A New Harmony takes the next step forward in emphasizing the need to overcome divisions and find common ground and to reclaim the best of ancient Christian spirituality and a more holistic, natural way of thinking about faith. Offers a view of spirituality rooted in ancient insights that includes and extends beyond Christianity. Presents the case for the need for “a new harmony” that is both mystical and relational. The author J. Philip Newell is a well-known expert on Celtic Christianity and the author of the acclaimed Listening for the Heartbeat of God. February Book: rebel buddha by dzogchen ponlop There’s a rebel within you. It’s the part of you that already knows how to break free of fear and unhappiness. This rebel is the voice of your own awakened mind. It’s your rebel buddha—the sharp, clear intelligence that resists the status quo. It wakes you up from the sleepy acceptance of your day-to-day reality and shows you the power of your enlightened nature. It’s the vibrant, insightful energy that compels you to seek the truth. Dzogchen Ponlop guides you through the inner revolution that comes from unleashing your rebel buddha. He explains how, by training your mind and understanding your true nature, you can free yourself from needless suffering. He presents a thorough introduction to the essence of the Buddha’s teachings and argues that, if we are to bring these teachings fully into our personal experience, we must go beyond the cultural trappings of traditional Asian Buddhism. “We all want to find some meaningful truth about who we are,” he says, “but we can only find it guided by our own wisdom—by our own rebel buddha within.” Facilitator: Brian NeelyDates: Thursdays, February 11, 18, and 25Time: 1:30 -3:30 p.m. Cost: Freewill Donation

Stillpoint Readers’ Community March Book: Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss, Ph.D Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation to date of energy medicine by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, one of the “hottest new voices in the a lternative health/spirituality scene” (Publishers Week-ly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss’s work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss’s breakthrough model of the body’s seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions, the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life, to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way, Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life Facilitator: Marlyn Buckley Dates: Thursdays, March 10, 17, and 24 Time: 1:30-3:30 p.m. Cost: Free Will Donation

Stillpoint Readers’ CommunityApril Book: The Places that Scare You by Pema Chodron We always have a choice, Pema Chödrön teaches: We can let the circumstances of our lives harden us and make us increasingly resentful and afraid, or we can let them soften us and make us kinder. Here Pema provides the tools to deal with the problems and difficulties that life throws our way. This wisdom is always available to us, she teaches, but we usually block it with habitual patterns rooted in fear. Beyond that fear lies a state of openheartedness and tenderness. This book teaches us how to awaken our basic goodness and connect with others, to accept ourselves and others complete with faults and imperfections, and to stay in the present moment by seeing through the strategies of ego that cause us to resist life as it is.
