Dear Colleagues,

The RCSI Postgraduate Lecture series is now in its fifth year. The purpose of the programme is to provide an opportunity for dentists who wish to update their knowledge on the current concepts relative to general dental practice and also for those who are actively pursuing additional postgraduate qualifications. Indeed the lectures are particularly suited to preparation for the Diploma of Primary Care Dentistry and MFD.

The lecture series combines basic sciences, practice management, practical tips and indeed the whole range of dental practice. We are fortunate that the speakers who have agreed to present at the meetings are all experts in their chosen areas. You will be familiar with some of these speakers but the Faculty also actively encourages more recently qualified colleagues, who may be less well known, to present topics of relevance.

A new innovation this year is the introduction of a mornings hand on course in endodontics which should be of interest to all. In addition at the end of each of the mornings there will be practical sessions of particular interest to those who are taking the Diploma of Primary Care Dentistry or MFD examinations.

The format of the presentations is short lecture based and the concept is “maximum knowledge in minimum time.”

As part of the spring programme the Faculty will hold an Intensive Revision Course on March 28th 2015. This intensive review course is increasingly being availed of as a method of revision both for the Diploma of Primary Care Dentistry and the MFD examinations.

The excellent team of lecturers assembled for the day have been given the brief of providing information in the form of five tips relevant to the area they have been asked to present. There is a wide diversity of topics from infection control to prosthodontics and there will be practice question sessions along with an exam overview to assist potential candidates.

It promises to be an exciting, intensive day and I look forward to seeing you there.

I hope you enjoy the programme and any suggestions you have for improvements or future topics are always welcome.

Dr. Billy FenlonBilly is a Paediatric Dentist in referral practice since 1992 at the Northbrook Clinic in Ranelagh. He completed his Masters in Paediatric Dentistry from the University of Leeds & Membership in Paediatric Dentistry from the Royal College of Dentists in Canada in 1990. Billy has particular interest in behaviour guidance of the fearful child patient and in comprehensive dental care of the young child.

Dr. Ebrahim Al AwadhiDr. Al Awadhi qualified from Dublin Dental School and Hospital in 1998. He then went to work for 2 years in the Eastern Health Board. He completed his MFD examination in Dublin in 2000. Later that year, he attended the Eastman Dental Institute where he completed his Masters in Orthodontics in 2002. A Membership of Orthodontics (MOrth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland followed. He worked for 2 years in the Regional Orthodontic Unit in St. James Hospital in Dublin before moving back to Dublin Dental Hospital where he obtained his PhD from Trinity College, Ireland. He was the Director of Teaching and Learning (Post Grad) in Trinity College, Ireland from 2012-2014. He has research interests in Temporary anchorage devices, orthodontically induced root resorption and Invisalign. He is a consultant lecturing in Orthodontics and also maintains a part time private practice since 2004.

Ms. Catherine WaldronCatherine Waldron has worked in the dental field for over 30 years, with qualifications in Dental Nursing, Dental Hygiene and teaching. She has completed a Masters by Research and a Masters in Health Promotion. She is a past president of the Irish Dental Nurses Association and Irish Dental Hygienists Association and a past Vice-President of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists. Catherine has worked in general and specialist dental practices and was the Lecturer and Director of the Dental Hygiene Programme in the Dublin Dental University Hospital up to last year. She is currently studying full time for a PhD in Special Care Dentistry.

Dr. Declan Corcoran Dr. Corcoran was conferred with a Masters in Periodontology (Indiana U) and a Certificate in Postgraduate Study (Indiana U). In 1998 Dr. Corcoran was conferred with a FFD, Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin. Dr. Corcoran maintains a practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Dublin. He is a clinical instructor to post graduate dental students in the Dublin Dental University Hospital. Dr. Corcoran is past president of the Irish Society of Periodontology and past president of the European Federation of Periodontology. In 2014 he was recertified as a Diplomate of the American Academy of Periodontology.

Dr. Peter CowanDr. Peter Cowan qualified in dentistry in 1978 from Trinity College Dublin. He was awarded FDRCSR(Edin) by examination in 1981 and the Specialist Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI (FFDRCSIrel) in Restorative Dentistry in 1984. He was a lecturer and later clinical tutor in the Dublin Dental University School and Hospital between 1981-1991 and has been a senior lecturer and examiner for the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI since 1995 to date. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has published both nationally and internationally. Dr. Cowan is a past Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI (2001-2004) and is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Faculty of Dentistry,RCSI. He is the Faculty’s examinations co-ordinator and chief examiner for the Membership and Fellowship examinations. He is a specialist oral surgeon and runs a clinical practice in Dublin limited to minor Oral Surgery with a special interest in implant dentistry.

Professor Kumara EkanayakeProfessor Ekanayake qualified in Dentistry at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and in Medicine at Trinity College University of Dublin. He completed Specialist Registrar training in Ireland at St James’s Hospital, Dublin. Professor Ekanyake worked as a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Dental Sciences/ University Dental Hospital Peradeniya, Sri Lanka after obtaining specialist registration in Ireland. He is based at the Dublin Dental University Hospital with commitments to St James’s University Hospital, Dublin and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin.

Professor Stephen FlintStephen Flint is Clinical Professor and Consultant in Oral Medicine in the Dublin Dental School and Hospital in Ireland and Pro-Dean of the Dental School. He completed his specialist oral medicine training and a PhD in molecular biology at the University of Bristol, following undergraduate degrees in dentistry (Guy’s Hospital) and medicine (the Royal Free Hospital) in London. He has numerous journal scientific publications, book chapters and is co-author of the textbook, “Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases”. He teaches a postgraduate Oral Medicine course at the Karolinska Institute and is external examiner to the Eastman Dental Institute in London, Kuwait University and Cork University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the International College of Dentistry and Trinity College, Dublin, Regional Co-coordinator for Continuing Dental Education for the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board, past chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre in Ireland, advisor to the Dental Council, Department of Health and Children and Irish Medicines Board, an invited Medical Research Assessor to the Italian Minister for Health and Ministry for Universities and Research, visiting lecturer to the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Mexico, Brazil and Kuwait.

Dr. Albert LeungAlbert is a Principal Clinical Teaching Fellow and Programme Co-ordinator for the MSc in Restorative Dental Practice at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London. He is an external BDS Examiner for University College Cork and examines the ORE for the UK General

Dental Council. He chairs the FGDS/MGDS Examinations Committee and is a Member of the Board of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Dr. Eddie CotterEdward Cotter graduated from Dublin Dental School in 1988.He received his post graduate training in Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa. He then completed a Fellowship in Prosthodontics at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Iowa City. This was followed by a Fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.He is in Practice limited to Prosthodontics, Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Oncology.

Dr. Paul QuinlanPaul Quinlan graduated from the Dublin Dental School 1991. He completed an M.Sc. in periodontology at the Eastman Dental School, London, in 1993. In 1996 he was awarded a fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and he also received a Fulbright Scholarship for study in the USA. He completed the periodontal and prosthodontic training programs at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001. He returned to Ireland and commenced specialist practice limited to prosthodontics and periodontics at Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin. He is a diplomat of the American Boards of Periodontology and Prosthodontics. He is a fellow of the ITI. He has lectured in Ireland, the UK and Internationally.

Dr. Hal DuncanDr. Hal Duncan qualified from University of Glasgow in 1993. After several practice and dental school appointments, he

worked in several specialist endodontic practices in Ireland and England from 1998-2002. Dr. Duncan received his postgraduate endodontic training in Guy’s Hospital London from 2002-2006. In 2008 Hal completed a collaborative research project on MTA in the University of Zurich and recently completed a fellowship in New York University on pulpal research. Since 2008 he has worked at Trinity College Dublin as a Consultant and in Endodontics. He is currently undertaking an external PhD with the University of Birmingham, England with Professor’s Tony Smith and Paul Cooper, in the area of pulpal damage, regeneration and repair. He edited the textbook ‘Pitt Fords Problems based learning in Endodontology’, has contributed to other leading endodontic textbooks and published several articles in peer-reviewed international journals.

Dr. PJ ByrneDr. Byrne graduated in Dentistry in 1982 from University College Cork. He completed a number of hospital appointments followed by a period in practice in Periodontology and Oral Surgery. In 1990 he completed his MSc at the Eastman Dental Institute in Periodontology which was awarded with distinction from the University of London. He was awarded the Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize by the British Society of Periodontology in 1990. He held posts as Registrar in Oral Surgery in Dublin Dental Hospital and in the Department of Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, London. In 1991, he was elected by examination, Fellowship in Dental Surgery, F.D.S. Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry, F.F.D. Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He has



been in referral practice in Dublin in Periodontology, Oral Surgery & Implant Dentistry, and lecturer in Periodontology at Dublin Dental School & Hospital, Trinity College since 1991. He is The Director of the Programme for Clinical Dental Photography (Postgraduate Core Course) since 1998. He was awarded a Fellowship, F.I.C.D. by the International College of Dentists in 2002 and in 2007elected a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was elected Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, in 2004, and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry RCSI in September 2007 until February 2011.

Dr. John WalshDr. John Walsh received his undergraduate dental degree from Trinity College in 1974 and was awarded the Sheldon Friel Prize. After a year in private practice in England he received the American Dental Society of Europe Scholarship award that enabled him to attend the Graduate Paedodontic Program at Indiana University School of Dentistry where he received his Masters Degree in 1977. He was awarded the Ralph E. McDonald Scholarship and the G. R. Baker prize. Subsequently he gained entry to the Graduate Orthodontic Program at the University Of Washington from where he obtained his Masters Degree in Orthodontics in 1986.On his return to Ireland he continued to participate as a part time lecturer in the Division of Child Dental Health at Dublin University Dental Hospital.In 1989 he became the first European to successfully complete the Board certification process of the American Board of Paediatric Dentistry. He was awarded an FFD (Ad Eundem) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1997. He has also received the FICD and the FACD. He is a

past President of the Metropolitan Branch of the Irish Dental Association and has served on both the Dental Council and the Council of the Irish Dental Association. He was a trustee of the Irish Dental Health Foundation for over twenty years. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI and continues in specialist practice in Orthodontics. He has lectured extensively at home and abroad in the areas of both Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics.

Dr. Kieran DalyKieran graduated from the Dental School at Trinity College Dublin in 1996. In 2001, he was awarded the Membership of the Faculty of Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and in 2005 he was awarded the Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Kieran completed a three-year full time Masters Programme in Orthodontics at the Dental School, Trinity College Dublin in 2005. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2005. Kieran has worked exclusively in the field of Orthodontics for over 10 years, completing thousands of orthodontic cases.

Dr. Donal A. Blackwell Donal Blackwell graduated from the Dental School at Trinity College Dublin in 1988. Following a number of years in General Practice, he completed his Master’s Degree Programme in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute London in 1996. He returned to the South East of Ireland to open a referral practice concentrating on crown and bridgework and implant dentistry. In 2004 he moved with his family to New York City to undertake further post-graduate studies, a two year fulltime Advanced Programme in Implant Dentistry at New York University. He completed this programme and returned to Ireland in 2006. Donal works in Waterford City, in Practice Limited to Fixed Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry.

Dr. Grace KellyGrace graduated from UCC in 2003 and completed her vocational dental training in 2004. She worked in the HSE Mid-West for 6 years, before undertaking a Senior House Officer post in Special Care Dentistry in Dublin University Dental School in 2008. She completed her MFDS in the Royal College of Surgeons (Dublin) in 2009, her Diploma in Hypnosis related to dentistry in University College London in 2010; her Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Cardiff University and Diploma in Special Care Dentistry in the Royal College of Surgeons (London) in 2013.Grace completed her three year specialist training in Special Care Dentistry in 2013, the first specialist trained in Special Care Dentistry in Wales and was subsequently appointed to her current post in March 2014. She was awarded the Tricollegiate Membership in Special Care Dentistry RCS Glasgow in June 2014.

Dr. Arthur O’ConnorArthur O’Connor graduated from Cork Dental School, University College Cork in 2001. He obtained membership of the Faculty of Dentistry of the RCSI, completed his prosthodontic training in Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 2010 and his fellowship in Implant dentistry in University of Pennsylvania Dental School in June 2011. He is in private prosthodontic practice in Cork.

Professor Duncan SleemanDuncan Sleeman is Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at University College Cork. Completing his medical and dental training in Ireland he entered the Maxillofacial training programme in the United Kingdom receiving his FRCS (Maxfax) from Edinburgh in 1990. Following terms as Lecturer/Senior Registrar at Dublin Dental Hospital in 1992 and at Sunderland in 1993 he returned to St. James Hospital in 1994 before being appointed as Professor at Cork Dental School in 1995. Professor Sleeman has numerous publications and lectures widely and has been a board member of the Faculty of Dentistry for many years. Professor Sleeman has served as an examiner for RCSI as well as an Inter collegiate examiner in Oral Surgery. He is a member of the Executive Committee of Cork Dental School.

Dr. Johanna P. Glennon Johanna Glennon qualified from Dublin in 1984 and worked in general dental practice for eight years in the United Kingdom and held a part-time Clinical Assistant post in Oral Surgery during 1987 – ‘88. In 1994 she completed her Masters in Endodontics with Distinction at the University of London. Her research work, as part of her MSc., has been published in the International Endodontic Journal. Since completing her Masters programme Johanna has been in practice limited to Endodontics and is a part-time clinical demonstrator/lecturer at Dublin Dental Hospital, teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate level. She was one of the three course organisers of the endodontic module for the Diploma in Clinical Dentistry, postgraduate programme at Dublin Dental Hospital. She is a Past President of the Irish Endodontic Society and was actively involved on the committee for 11 years. During her Presidency, Ireland hosted the 12th Biennial conference of the European Society of Endodontology. She has both organised and given practical endodontic courses in Ireland. She has lectured nationally and internationally.

Dr. Hal DuncanDr. Henry (Hal) Duncan qualified from University of Glasgow in 1993. After practice and dental school appointments, he worked in specialist endodontic practices in Northern Ireland and England from 1998-2008. Dr Duncan received his postgraduate endodontic training in Guy’s Hospital London from 2002-2006 under the tutelage of the late Tom Pitt-Ford and is currently a UK registered Endodontic specialist. In 2008 he concluded a collaborative research study with Dr Ram Nair (in the University of Zurich) on pulp capping with MTA and calcium hydroxide

and in 2013 he completed an IADR-fellowship in New York University with Dr Nicola Partridge on the role of epigenetic modifying agents on pulpal mineralization. Since 2008 he has worked full-time at Trinity College Dublin as an academic and Consultant in Endodontics. He is currently completing an external PhD with the University of Birmingham, England with Professor’s Paul Cooper, Tony Smith and Dr Garry Fleming in the area of epigenetics, pulpal regeneration and repair. He has received several research grants, has edited and contributed to Endodontic textbooks, published a number of articles in peer-reviewed international journals and is an Associate Editor for the International Endodontic Journal. He is a current committee member of the Irish Division of the IADR, is the Irish representative to the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and also serves on the ESE membership committee. He is the recent past president of the Irish Endodontic Society.

Dr. Patrick ClearyDr. Cleary graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1981 with BDentSc. He obtained a Certificate of Postgraduate Study and an MSD in Endodontics from Indiana University in 1986. On returning to Ireland Dr. Cleary set up a practice limited to endodontics and currently practices in Booterstown. He is a past president of the Irish Dental Association and the Irish Endodontic Society, a specialist member of the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. Cleary is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, Fellow of the American College of Dentists and Fellow of the Faculty of Dentistry RCSI. He has presented at National and International meetings.

Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI Annual Scientific Meeting 2015 The Annual Scientific Meeting will be held on thursday, october 29th and Friday, october 30th 2015 and is entitled ‘New Horizons in Dental Practice’. This meeting will review all the digital aids that are used in record keeping, pre-treatment diagnosis and treatment planning and clinical and laboratory work. There will be a ‘visionary lecture’ on where we will be in 15 years’ time. We will also review the current requirements for clinical waste management in practice. The emphasis is on relevance to general dentistry. Further details and programme information will shortly be available on the Faculty website: http://dentistry.rcsi.ie
