RECYCLING

By Dan Hecht, Administrator, Clearwater County Environmental Services

Those who use the recycling drop-off stations in Bagley and Clearbrook will notice different

collection bins and different signs the next time you drop off your recyclable aluminum,

tin, plastic, cardboard and pa-per. These new bins are owned by Listrom’s Disposal of Bagley

and serviced on a weekly route through a contract between Listrom’s and the County.

Listrom’s will service these con-tainers with a dedicated packer

truck, so even though it looks like a garbage truck, this one is used only for recycling collec-

tion! You will notice the signs say “co-mingled” recyclables – this means that you no longer have

to separate your various mate-rials at home; instead all the recyclables can stay mixed. Tin and aluminum, paper,

flattened cardboard and plastic bottles are all collected to-gether and the separating is

done at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) over in Fosston at Polk County’s Waste-to-Energy Facility (incinerator) to

which Clearwater County has been a partner since the late 1980’s.

Polk County’s MRF is very efficient at separating recycla-bles, marketing the recovered material and thereby reducing

the amount of revenue Polk needs from its partner counties to run the incinerator.

We’re not talking pocket change here either, as Polk’s revenues range from $200,000

to over $500,000 annually from the sale of recyclables on a to-tal facility budget approaching $4 million, so recycling is in-

deed meaningful to the cash flow in our solid waste system. This efficiency shows up in Clearwater’s solid waste budget

and in turn on all of our prop-erty tax statements because Polk uses the MRF to offset tip-

ping fees for the rest of the in-cinerator operation. Provided that residents don’t abuse this service by throwing

regular trash in the recycling bins, Polk County will not charge Clearwater a tipping fee

on the clean recyclables be-cause of their value, so I urge you to use this recycling ser-vice, use it properly and tell

others to do the same.

Former Long Lost Lake resident,

Homer King, St Joseph, MO, passed

away on Tuesday, October 15,

2013. He was 91. He and his wife,

Mary, owned the lot on the north end

of LLL where Jesse Cox now re-

sides. Homer was an avid fisherman

and knew all the prime spots on the

lake where the walleye lay. Following

the sale of their lot in the late 80's,

they became campground ground

hosts at the Bagley city park each

summer. Our sympathy goes out to

his widow, Mary.

The last

week in No-

vember, a

surprise 80th

birthday

party was

held in St

Joe, MO for Nina Ecton. Nina was

the first female year round resident

on the west side of the lake. Her

husband, Dobber, was the first presi-

dent and major organizer of the lake

association. Ecton trail and Ecton

Lane are named in their honor. Resi-

dents attending the party were

Linda Ditterick, Dick and Kathy

Toomey, Jesse and Charis Cox,

Marv and Babe Mortenson and

former resident, Mary King. Nina's

good friend, MaryAnn and her son,

Randy were also guests.

Pat Johnson Hummel, another resi-dent who vacationed on the lake in the 70’s and 80’ and owned the lot that is underwater next to Simonson’s, passed away November 5 this fall. In 1978, her husband Paul was killed in a plane crash and Pat became the sole provider for her 3 children. After working four years at Fargo North High School as a secre-tary, she took a position as back up receptionist for Northern Improve-ment. She retired 32 years later as a Vice President and Board Member of the company.

Dan and Laurie Wilson welcomed into the world, their 4th grandchild, a girl, and daughter of Traci and Tim. In March, Dan spent two weeks in Cambridge, England taking care of his two year old grand daughter Vivi-nan while her parents focused on the new arrival.

Traveling LLL Residents.

Our new president, Dan Wilson has had quite the year of travel. He has gone to both China and England to visit family. Gugisbergs visited famiy in Germany, Mortensons spent several weeks in Hawaii over the Christmas holidays, Svobodnys visited Florida and Alderinks visited Arizona. With the long, cold winter, who can blame anyone for getting out of the weather for a while! Audrey Hiney’s cabin and the Mort-ensons’ home have sold. The lake is losing some long-time and very active residents. We wish them well in the next phase of their lives.

Volunteer as a Friend of

Itasca State Park

In the past some of our residents,

including Bill and Avis Rambo, volun-

teered as "Friends of Itasca State

Park” and Dan Wilson is currently on

the board of "Friends." It is an or-

ganization of volunteers who support

numerous special projects within the

park. For more information, see the

website at: www.friendsofitasca.org/

Membership applications will also be

available at the Spring LLLAA meeting

in June .

Long Lost Lake winters can be long and cold but also fun. Some of this fun took place on February 15th when friends and neighbors got together to walk the White Earth State Forest on snowshoes and they did it at night. Candles inside of a brown paper bag were placed at 30 foot intervals to light a 1.4 mile trail through what some of the locals refer to as the “Enchanted Forest”. The trail curved and wound its way on a relatively flat terrain; steep hills were avoided so all levels of ability could participate. Approximately 18 people snow shoed the trail with the youngest being 6 yrs of age and the oldest at 74 yrs old. The snowshoe participants started in Mort-enson’s yard, followed 14 ice chande-lier candles about 75 yards to the start of the snowshoe trail and then followed 185 bagged candles down the trail. Upon completing the circular route all enjoyed a warm fire, hot chocolate, various delicious snacks and friends catching up on each others’ lives back at the Mortenson cabin. It was a cloudy night and very dark in the woods, adding to the overall effect of the candles. Dick Toomey (the old-est participant) hiked by himself and stopped often to enjoy the quiet of the woods and the illumination of the can-dles. On one stop he said he counted 14 candles through the trees. Maryn Swanson (the youngest partici-pant) said her favorite part was playing board games in the loft of the cabin with the kids after the hike. She and others also alluded to the fact that there was a “wood gnome” that reached out from the black shadows of the trees to startle some of the hikers. Two snowshoe adventurers went back out for a second trip around the trail at about 10:00 pm. About half way around the trail the February “Snow

Moon” broke free from the clouds and candles were no longer needed. Setting up the trail was a joint effort with Dick Toomey, Dan Wilson, Lau-rie Wilson, Elly Swanson, Ellie Engles, Sanya Mortenson and Marv Mortenson all contributing to the task. The “Snowbirds” do miss out on some awesome scenery and winter activities while you bask in the warmth of the sun! Other winter activities enjoyed by some of the winter residents are to X-country skiing or snowshoeing the trails in the woods around their homes, the North Country Trail when events sponsored, and Itasca State Park during their lantern light (144) snowshoe event. There are also the die hard winter “Ice Fishermen and Fisherwomen” who angle or dangle their line in the water in hopes of catching the “big one”. Then there are those who sit in a dark house, looking through a 2 foot by 4 foot hole cut in the ice, straining their eyes to see through the 10 foot deep water in wait of a “big” Northern to swim in so they can launch their spear at them. Occasionally the quiet is inter-rupted by a few to several snowmo-bilers.

ENBRIDGE PIPELINE

LLL members Dan Wilson and Peter Hovde attended 2 public information meet-

ings on the proposed Enbridge Pipeline earlier this year. The pipeline is sched-

uled to take a southerly route from Clearbrook east of Hwy 92 and 200 and con-

tinuing south just east of Itasca State Park following Hwy 71.

On April 5 a hearing was held in St. Paul before an administrative judge who will

consider all the public comments and then issue recommendations to the Min-

nesota Public Utilities Commission. The arguments for and against the pipeline

project echo some of those being made in the debate over the proposed Key-

stone XL pipeline, reflecting strong feelings for and against the pipeline. A final

decision from the Public Utilities Commission is expected about March 23, 2015.

Contact Dan at [email protected] or Peter at [email protected] for

more information on the pipeline and on how you can get involved.
