As I stood on the playground watching my children play, I told

my boss about the previous day’s events over the phone. Tears began to stream down my face as I shared these words with him, in my attempt to make sense of our circumstances.

It was during our routine 20-week ultrasound that we discovered our son would be born with spina bifida. Five weeks later, we were 600 miles from home at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville for a revolutionary new fetal surgery to repair the lesion on his little back, with hopes that it would minimize complications associated with his birth defect. Countless weeks of bed rest followed, as we awaited his birth.

I never envisioned our family in this

situation. Little did I know, our stay at the Ronald McDonald House was all part of God’s plan for our family as we welcomed the newest member to our clan.

As we welcomed our teeny-tiny little boy into our family, we were filled with so many questions, fears and unknowns. When Sam from the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City called to tell us there was a room available for our family, it helped put our minds at ease. Despite all the unknowns, at least we would be together…and close to Kellyn, to surround him with the needed love and support to help him grow and thrive…and someday bring him home.

Throughout our lives, we had heard

about the Ronald McDonald House, heard about various fundraisers and collected the occasional pop top. Admittedly, we never anticipated our family being on the inside of the House. Rather, the Ronald McDonald House is where “other” people stayed. Little did we know the plan God had in store for us!

During our month-long stay at the House, our family approached each day as the next step in our adventure together. We had already fallen in love with our baby boy throughout the numerous fuzzy images seen in our ultrasounds and each kick he shared as a reminder that he was growing, developing and looking forward to meeting us soon. Now that he was finally here, and we got to see his beautiful face and hold his

tiny little body in our arms, we were committed to encouraging him along until he was strong enough to go home. Since he was born at just 32 weeks and 6 days, his trip home was several weeks away. Until then, the Ronald McDonald House was our home away from home.

After Kellyn’s birth and prior to the start of the school year, our entire family stayed at the House. Despite missing the comforts of home, our two older kiddos Ryne (9) and Evelyn (4 ½) enjoyed playing on the playground equipment, checking out the toys in the playroom and sharing dinner together in the Great Room.

I’d be remiss if I failed to mention the joy they had in checking out the treat supply in the “Anyone Fridge.” Lucky for them, there were typically ice cream cones, popsicles or some other yummy treat to top off a full day in the NICU watching over Kellyn. Thank goodness for the joy and laughter of a child – despite the situation, they sure are resilient!

As an added bonus, due to Kellyn’s

August 1 birth, our stay at the House coincided with the kick-off of football practice for our beloved Hawkeyes. You can imagine the thrill our two little Hawkeyes had as they walked to and from the House to the NICU each day and got to encounter “real live Hawkeyes” en route as they were heading out to the practice facilities in the morning or filing in the team vans at the end of a long day!

After the school year began, our family schedule also had to adjust. With Andy and the two big kids traveling to and from home, work and school each day, it was such a feeling of security to have a safe place for

me to stay while remaining close to Kellyn. As hard as it was to be away from him at night, and being away from our home and the rest of our family for those several weeks, there was comfort in being surrounded by other families that were all in similar situations – all fighting for the best possible outcome for their child. What an incredibly inspiring group of people to be surrounded by! Our family continues to pray for the health

and happiness of all families we met during our stay at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. These families are a constant reminder that each of us has so much to be thankful for.

Throughout our stay, and including our final day when we were offered tickets to the Iowa football game against Northern Illinois – courtesy of a very generous and compassionate supporter of the home – our family continued to be blown away by the care and compassion shown by the families and staff at the Ronald McDonald House. Despite our month-long visit being full of fears and unknowns, we cherish the time we were able to spend together at the House, and are forever grateful for the memories we have.

The question of “how did we get here” was made clear by the twists and turns our family took as we navigated the path towards Kellyn’s birth and the days/weeks following. Little did we know that our unexpected detour in life would steal a piece of our hearts forever.

We are eternally grateful for the Ronald McDonald House, the families we met, and the supportive and caring staff. We look forward to someday taking Kellyn back to this very special place we called home throughout his stay in the NICU.

- Erin Moeller, Mount Vernon, Iowa

NEW FACES

Amy O’Deen, Senior Assistant Director at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), began her second stint on the RMHC-EIWI Board of Directors in January. Her previous term on the Board concluded in 2005.

“I was so impressed with the welcoming spirit of the House and the respite it provides for so many families being served at the UIHC,” O’Deen says. “Without question, the House serves as an invaluable resource for our patients, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to help advance its important mission.”

A member of the UIHC Hospital Administration team for more than 30 years, O’Deen was awarded Fellow status in the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2007, the top health care management credential.

O’Deen has devoted considerable time to several UI and community organizations throughout her tenure, including leadership roles with the UI Alumni Association, the Iowa Women’s Leadership Conference, the Presidential Committee on Athletics and the Iowa Women’s Foundation. Last year, O’Deen was selected by the Corridor Business Journal as a “Woman of Influence.”

AMY O’DEENBOARD MEMBER

HALEY HINESNIGHT MANAGER

Haley Hines, a junior at the University of Iowa studying Health Promotion, joined the RMHC-EIWI staff as night manager in December. Originally from Sac City, Iowa, Hines says she decided last summer to volunteer some of her time.

“Right away the Ronald McDonald House came to mind because of the comfort and support it has provided families in my local community,” Hines says. “I remember leaving the House after my first shift feeling like I had already made a difference. The welcoming atmosphere, grateful family members and fun staff are what motivated me to come back every week.”

In addition to her work at the House, Hines has since joined Dance Marathon and has been accepted into Camp Adventure to work with children overseas on American military bases. Ultimately, she hopes to one day use her education in Health Promotion to help kids dealing with childhood obesity live healthier and happier lives.

Special thanks to outgoing Board Member Tara Clark and Grants and Scholarships Coordinator Beth Pfohl for their years of service and dedication to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois.

Thank You!

Ten guest rooms at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City were remodeled in 10 hours — its very own “extreme makeover” — in January.

The updates included new paint and furnishings for 10 of the 31 rooms at the House. Interior design services were provided free of charge by Mark Roberts of Larry Roberts Interiors in Cedar Rapids. New bed frames, dressers and night stands were constructed by and purchased from Iowa Prison Industries. New bedding, curtains and lamps were purchased from JCPenney at a great sale price.

The old furniture was donated to the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Iowa City. Adamantine Spine Moving assisted with the removal and hauling of the items.

“One of our goals is to make families

as comfortable as we can when they stay at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City,” says Kristin Roberts, Executive Director. “That’s why we make it a priority to update furnishings periodically.”

Additional rooms will be updated in the coming years. Donors wishing to support this effort are encouraged to designate their gift for the room remodeling project. Call us at (319) 356-3939 for more details.

Fourteen thousand napkins might seem like a lot, but when you’re trying to serve 31 families every day, they’re a necessity.

Quad Cities area residents and McDonald’s stores stepped up in a big way with donations through the first-ever Giving Tree program to support the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City. In just 18 days, the community donated items with an estimated value of $2,100.

“We already receive a tremendous amount of support from the McDonald’s family in the Quad Cities

area, so to have McDonald’s staff and community members come together to provide us with this additional gift during the holidays is fantastic,” says Kristin Roberts, Executive Director.

The miniature holiday trees were on display in 45 McDonald’s restaurants in the Quad Cities area from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, 2013. In all, 14,244 napkins, 7,441 paper plates and 5,422 foam cups were donated, along with cleaning supplies, gift cards and stamps.

All the items will be used to support families staying at the 31-room

Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City in 2014.

Visit rmhc-eiwi.org/givingtrees for more information.

Beard goes bye-bye to help RMHCA special gift arrived at the House on Christmas Day, and it all started with the decision to shave a few whiskers.

That day, Cale and Jamie Henderson of Cedar Rapids donated a new Xbox One for families to enjoy. The Hendersons stayed at the House in 2011 when their daughter was born.

Cale says the family raised the money in about two weeks by offering to shave his beard. In addition to the video game system, their family donated $1,735, two Xbox games and family DVDs.

“Happy Holidays from two people that just want to help,” Cale said.

SHARETHE LOVE

More than half of the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City are unable to pay for their room. To fill this void, we’re looking for 1,000 people who would be willing to donate $15 between Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, through our Share the Love campaign. This would meet our goal of raising $15,000.

The concept is easy... » Step 1: Start a fundraising page. » Step 2: Ask 10 friends if they’d be willing to donate $15 to reach our

suggested per-person fundraising goal of $150.

Why $150? Because the average family stays 10 nights at our House. We ask $15 per night, but no family is ever turned away.

Remember, your gift is a gift of love. The money donated directly supports our mission of keeping families together when their children need medical care. Go to sharethelove.kintera.org/rmhc-eiwi to start your page today!

Cargill McMason Open Raises $22,629!

Employees of the Cargill Kitchen Solutions Plant in Mason City, Iowa presented a check for $22,629, which was raised through their annual supplier golf outing, the Cargill McMason Open.

Part of the gift is designated to be used for fresh fruits and vegetables, fitness passes for families and for items to stock our food pantries at the UI Children’s Hospital.

Each year, students at Regina Elementary School in Iowa City collect donations for the Ronald McDonald House. This year, the bags, and bags, and bags of food and household items filled two vehicles!
